Wolbachia Infection In Cotesia Sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Causes Cytoplasmic Incompatibility: Implications For Biological Control, Moses B. Mochiah, Adele J. Ngi-Song, William A. Overholt, Richard Stouthamer

Cotesia sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an indigenous, gregarious, larval endoparasitoid that attacks mid- to late-instar of the stem borer larvae. Although the parasitoid is distributed widely throughout Africa, not all local populations appear to be equally effective in controlling stem borers. Consequently, there is an interest in releasing the more effective strains in areas that already have very low populations of C. sesamiae. Some C. sesamiae populations are infected with bacterial symbionts in the genus Wolbachia, which may induce cytoplasmic incompatibility. Using an antibiotic treatment, we have established that the Wolbachia infection causes cytoplasmic incompatibility of the female mortality type …

The Nature Of Interchain Excitations In Conjugated Polymers: Spatially-Varying Interfacial Solvatochromism Of Annealed Meh-Ppv Films Studied By Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy (Nsom), Richard D. The nature of interchain excitations in conjugated polymers was discussed. The spatially-varying solvatochromism of annealed poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) films were studied by near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). The solvatochromic spectral shifts of the interfacial luminescence were measured as a function of solvent polarity. The results were analyzed with an interfacial dielectric continuum model to determine the dipole moment of emissive excited states.

The Roddey McMillan Record (RMR) is Winthrop’s monthly multicultural student publication. The RMR has been a significant voice of the minority population of the Winthrop community since its creation by Gail Harris in April 1986. The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The concentration of photosynthetic pigments (i.e., chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids) and chlorophyll degradation enzyme (i.e., chlorophyllase, oxidative bleaching, and Mg-dechelatase) activities on aphid-damaged and non-damaged regions of the infested leaves were determined with two infestation periods (6 and 12 days). Russian wheat aphid [Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] feeding caused significant losses of chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids in the damaged regions. However, bird cherry-oat aphid [Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] feeding did not, except a significantly lower level of carotenoids was observed in the damaged regions from the short-infestation (6-day) samples. In August of 1998 the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), approached Dr. Phillip Abraham of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) with the proposal for an annual workshop focusing on emerging concepts in decision-support systems for military applications. The proposal was considered timely by the ONR Logistics Program Office for at least two reasons. First, rapid advances in information systems technology over the past decade had produced distributed, collaborative computer-assistance capabilities with profound potential for providing meaningful support to military decision makers.
