Topical Micronutrient Delivery System And Uses Of Thereof, Elaine L. Jacobson, Myron Jacobson, Jaber G. Qasem, Hyuntae Kim, Moonsun Kim

The invention involves methods and compositions useful in delivering micronutrients to cells. By formulating the micronutrient in the form of an ester that is convertible to the active form of the micronutrient, one can combine it with a co-ester that inhibits esterases, so that the micronutrient can reach the targeted cells prior to degradation. Both methods and compositions are described.

Rf Rendez-Blue: Reducing Power And Inquiry Costs In Bluetooth-Enabled Mobile Systems, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

In resource-limited mobile computing devices, Bluetooth wireless technology imposes a weighty burden due to inefficient power utilization and a sluggish device discovery process. Buttressing Bluetooth with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology by performing an operation we call “Rendez-Blue” alleviates these limitations. In the Rendez-Blue process, an RFID signal is used as a cue to “wake-up” a sleeping Bluetooth radio. This ensures that the Bluetooth radio is active only when needed, significantly reducing power consumption. In addition, RFID is used to communicate Bluetooth device information, allowing the user to bypass the traditional 10.24-second discovery process.

Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is an important enzyme in adipocyte and lipid metabolism with complex cellular regulation. Previous studies demonstrated an inhibition of LPL activity and synthesis following depletion of protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms with long term treatment of 3T3-F442A adipocytes with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate. To identify the specific PKC isoforms involved, we treated cells with antisense oligonucleotides that block expression of specific PKC isoforms. An antisense oligonucleotide to PKCα inhibited LPL activity by 78 ± 8%, whereas antisense oligonucleotides directed against PKCδ or PKCε had no effect on LPL activity. The stories of the (Elaine Goodale and Charles) Eastmans’ and (Mabel Dodge and Tony) Luhans’ marriages contain all the necessary ingredients for two “racy” novels but they also provide more than voyeuristic romances. As Peggy Pascoe has written, “For scholars interested in the social construction of race, gender, and culture, few subjects are as potentially revealing as the history of interracial marriage.” Both the Eastmans and the Luhans operated at the outer boundaries of American racial norms.
