Study Of Area Deprivation In Connecticut And Maine, Jonathan H. Ryder Jan 2002

Study Of Area Deprivation In Connecticut And Maine, Jonathan H. Ryder

Honors Theses

This paper accounts the development of an area deprivation index for two New England states, Connecticut and Maine. The index incorporates data from the 1990 U.S. Census. By applying methodology used in previous projects that created similar indices for area in Britain, an area deprivation index is created at the 5-digit zip code level for these two states in the year 1990. This project provides an example of how such a study can be applied to and completed in the United States. Foremost, it is an attempt to evaluate the relative merits of examining a comprehensive measure of area deprivation, …

Recognizing The Interdependence Of Rights In The Antidiscrimination Context Through The World Conference Against Racism , Catherine Powell, Jennifer H. Lee Jan 2002

Recognizing The Interdependence Of Rights In The Antidiscrimination Context Through The World Conference Against Racism , Catherine Powell, Jennifer H. Lee

Faculty Scholarship

This background paper assesses the importance of integrating gender into efforts to address racial discrimination and related intolerance in the WCAR process. While this background paper primarily focuses on racial discrimination, the analysis may be applied to xenophobia and related intolerance where these experiences are "raced" experiences. Addressing these forms of intolerance in a comprehensive manner requires unmasking the ways in which race intersects with gender and other status. A gender analysis is needed to make racism more fully visible, because "racial discrimination does not always affect men and women equally or in the same way." Women often experience compounded …

Alcohol Use And Perceptions Of Alcohol Use Among Biology, Criminal Justice, Health Science, And Psychology Capstone Students At Grand Valley State University, Rebecca Postma

Masters Theses

This study brought the widely used Rutgers PRSP survey to upper level students in biology, criminal justice, health science and psychology capstone classes in the academic year of 2000/2001. The survey explores student perceptions of their own alcohol use, of their friends’ use, and that of other students. Data from 291 participants reveals gender differences in perception, differences in self-reported drinking habits among the four capstone groups, and differences between this group of participants and their expectations of other students’ drinking. These areas of information along with other interesting findings give important insight into the upper level students of Grand …

A Phenomenological Study: Mid-Career Changer Transitions Through Levels Of Expertise, Merrie Lynne Schroeder Jan 2002

A Phenomenological Study: Mid-Career Changer Transitions Through Levels Of Expertise, Merrie Lynne Schroeder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how two midlife adult men experienced different levels of expertise as they transitioned between non-teaching and teaching professions. Of further interest were the unique qualities that these mid career changers brought to secondary education and their recommendations for improving preparation, induction, and retention of midlife career changers in teaching; The study examined the transition experiences through three dimensions: (1) the levels of creativity in the context of environments; (2) the physical, social, and emotional development of the individuals; and (3) the theoretical framework of expertise. Semistructured interviews were conducted, and analyses …

The Evolution Of Drug Laws In America And The Variation In Penalties And Sentencing In State Courts, Robert Christopher Hogenson Jan 2002

The Evolution Of Drug Laws In America And The Variation In Penalties And Sentencing In State Courts, Robert Christopher Hogenson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the evolution of major drug laws in the United States, the variation in statutory penalties between selected states, and to determine if the written law is reflected in sentencing and prison admissions. Penalties for felony possession and illicit trafficking for five states-Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, and New York---were compared with case disposition, incarceration rates, and average time offenders spend in jail or prison for these offenses. Two data sources from Bureau of Justice Statistics were utilized for this analysis. The first data set was titled "State Court Processing Statistics, 1990, 1992, 1994, …

Exploration Of The Nature Of The Work Done By United States Marshals Service Employees In The District Of Nevada, Michael Robin Schlaerth Jan 2002

Exploration Of The Nature Of The Work Done By United States Marshals Service Employees In The District Of Nevada, Michael Robin Schlaerth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For the first time in its 212 year history, the United States Marshals Service created a position for employees specifically designated to assist district offices experiencing administrative and operational problems. This move was promoted by a recruiting session in April of 2001 which was designed entirely to train individuals for the job entitled GS-082. This move is the result of the agency's overall need for more labor. However, while these agents carry the title of "Deputy Marshal", they do not require the same intense training of the standard GS-1811 agents, as their duties do not demand it. Employees in the …

Female Victims Of Domestic Violence And Their Negotiation For Safety, Lisa Rose Kopinski Jan 2002

Female Victims Of Domestic Violence And Their Negotiation For Safety, Lisa Rose Kopinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

With the majority of studies focusing on the reasons why victims discontinue legal action against their abusers, I believe these women are once again being blamed for the continued abuse. It is my thesis that victims of domestic violence enter formal action against their abusers with specific goals in mind particular to each woman's life situation. These goals may be very different than the legal outcomes prominent amongst our nation's courtrooms. I will attempt to illustrate those goals victims routinely seek as well as the obstacles they encounter when attempting to free themselves from violence. This research will become a …

The Bounds Of Zeal In Criminal Defense: Some Thoughts On Lynne Stewart, Abbe Smith Jan 2002

The Bounds Of Zeal In Criminal Defense: Some Thoughts On Lynne Stewart, Abbe Smith

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

What caused Lynne Stewart, after more than two decades of defense lawyering in the best tradition of the legal profession to cross the line? Holding aside the political climate of the times, did Stewart's approach to lawyering--whether in political or not terribly political cases--lead to her demise? Is her approach to lawyering different from most of the bar?

This paper discusses the conduct that led to Stewart's prosecution and her approach to lawyering generally. The author examines whether her view of zeal and devotion is at odds with the prevailing ethics and ethos of defense lawyering, and, if not, what …

Humanity's Law: Rule Of Law For The New Global Politics, Ruti G. Teitel Jan 2002

Humanity's Law: Rule Of Law For The New Global Politics, Ruti G. Teitel

Articles & Chapters

This Article proposes that international law is undergoing a paradigm shift, which will have significant implications for foreign affairs. A dramatic expansion of legal machinery, institutions, and processes is occurring in the international sphere. Now, more than ever before foreign policy decision-making occurs in the shadow of the law. The conception of a new rule of law is at stake; appropriate to the present state of global politics, as it aims to manage heightened political conflict and violence through law. The impact of the juridical paradigm shift is primarily discursive. The expanded legal discourse represented by the present international human …
