Providing A Way Station: A Study Of The Joint Apna Ghar -The Enterprising Kitchen Program To Provide Employment Services To Immigrant Women Victimes Of Domestic Violence, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Christine George, Rafah Abuinnb

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

This report examines an innovative partnership designed to assist the employment needs of immigrant women who are survivors of domestic violence. In late 1999 a partnership was formed between The Enterprising Kitchen (TEK) and Apna Ghar, two organizations that are located in Chicago’s Uptown community. Apna Ghar, which provides services including shelter and counseling to South Asian immigrant women, sought client assistance from TEK, an intensive employment training program for women who are very marginal to the labor force. This report examines the first eighteen months of the partnership in which Apna Ghar referred twelve women to TEK’s training slots. …

Catholic Education As A Societal Institution, Maureen T. Hallinan Sep 2002

Catholic Education As A Societal Institution, Maureen T. Hallinan

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper conceptualizes Catholic education as a societal institution interdependent with other major social institutions in the country. A brief history of the American Catholic system demonstrates how its origin and growth were influenced by and affected the cultural, political, religious, and economic milieu in which it was embedded. In particular, the development of Catholic education interacted with the growth of the public schools system. Comparisons of contemporary Catholic and public schools illustrate this interdependency while underscoring the uniqueness and contributions of Catholic education. A sociological understanding of Catholic education as a societal entity should inform decisions about the future …

Report On The Situation Of Refugees In Yemen: Findings Of A One-Month Exploratory Study, Nesya H. B. Hughes Sep 2002

Report On The Situation Of Refugees In Yemen: Findings Of A One-Month Exploratory Study, Nesya H. B. Hughes

Faculty Journal Articles

The refugee situation in Yemen is of interest to academics and field professionals working on migration in the Arab world for a host of reasons. Yemen has the Arabian Peninsula’s largest non-Palestinian refugee population . Yet, despite the apparent magnitude of the refugee population in Yemen, little field research has been conducted on this country and its refugee situation. In addition, the Republic of Yemen is the first and only country in the Arabian Peninsula to have signed the 1951 Convention and its 1967 Protocol. Regardless, Yemen is hindered from fulfilling its international obligations because it is simultaneously one of …

A Differential Construct Methodology For Modelling Predictive Cultural Values, Béatrice Boufoy -Bastick Sep 2002

A Differential Construct Methodology For Modelling Predictive Cultural Values, Béatrice Boufoy -Bastick

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents an explanatory model of cultural behaviours, which resulted from a four-year ethnographic study of the different academic attainments in English of indigenous Fijians and the Indo-Fijians in the Fiji Islands. Fiji is a natural laboratory for investigating differential cultural behaviours because of these two culturally distinct main ethnic groups. Their different cultural behaviours were found to serve different values within each culture. A three-construct grounded model of these different values emerged from observations and analyses of these behaviours. These constructs were then de-constructed to define and explain a fourth target construct of their Differential Teaching Behaviours, which …

Caregivers' Experiences Of Informal Support In The Context Of Hiv/Aids, Premilla D'Cruz Sep 2002

Caregivers' Experiences Of Informal Support In The Context Of Hiv/Aids, Premilla D'Cruz

The Qualitative Report

Social support is an important buffer for family caregivers of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHIV/AIDS). With limited formal support options, these caregivers have to rely increasingly on informal networks. Yet, accessing this avenue is also fraught with difficulty due to the stigmatising nature of HIV infection. Research in this area is not just not sparse, but focusses largely on sources of support and the circumscribing effects of stigma. To further our understanding, a qualitative study was conducted using various concepts from social support theory. Twelve family caregivers in Mumbai, India, were interviewed, using the in-depth interview method. An iterative, thematic …

Role Of High School Teachers In Swedish Psychology Education: A Phenomenological Study, Torsten Norlander, Alexander Blom, Trevor Archer Sep 2002

Role Of High School Teachers In Swedish Psychology Education: A Phenomenological Study, Torsten Norlander, Alexander Blom, Trevor Archer

The Qualitative Report

A descriptive, qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews involving six high school teachers of psychology was carried out in order to ascertain the factors contributing to the outcome of education in the discipline. The Empirical Phenomenological Psychological method (EPP-method) was used. Eighteen categories of "meaning units" were derived from the analysis of the interview materials and are described together with representative quotations taken directly from the raw material. Didactic image but also school leadership, governors, politicians and students all influenced content, organisation and teaching of the psychology course, which is viewed not only as an autonomous subject in its own right …

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon Sep 2002

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon

Faculty Publications

As Mormon abridged the Nephite record he included what he deemed most relevant for latter-day Israel including stories of war. The so-called war chapters provide a rich resource of modern-day spiritual applications for teachers and students of the gospel (see Alma 43-62). One way to apply these chapters is to draw a parallel between the physical and the spiritual between Moroni's physical battles on the field and the spiritual battles that we face in our own lives today. To be more specific we might ask these questions: (1) What strategies did Captain Moroni use to prepare and protect himself and …

Teacher Persistence: A Crucial Disposition, With Implications For Teacher Education, Karl F. Wheatley Sep 2002

Teacher Persistence: A Crucial Disposition, With Implications For Teacher Education, Karl F. Wheatley

Essays in Education

Teacher persistence helps foster effective teaching. Specifically, teacher persistence may promote high expectations for students, the development of teaching skills, teachers’ reflectiveness, responsiveness to diversity, teaching efficacy, effective responses to setbacks, and successful use of reformed teaching methods. Common evaluation practices in teacher education may undermine teacher persistence. Teacher educators might support the development of teacher persistence by emphasizing the knowledge that makes persistence a rational response to setbacks, by teaching self-regulation skills that support persistence, and by using evaluation practices that require greater effort and persistence of students. The importance of fostering thoughtful teacher persistence is discussed, along with …

Seeking Salvation For Accountability, Melvin J. Dubnick Sep 2002

Seeking Salvation For Accountability, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

This is a paper in defense of a concept that is threatened by its popularity and undermined by those who use it most. It is a call for a reexamination and reaffirmation of “accountability” from the perspective of its central role in modern governance. It is a plea for saving the concept of accountability from the abuses it suffers in the hands of friends and advocates. It is an effort at salvation for a concept that has lost its meaningful “soul” in a world filled with rhetoricians, reformers, and functionalists – all well intentioned, but each contributing to accountability’s fall …

How Nonprofit Organizations Develop And Leverage Social Capital, Nancy K. King Aug 2002

How Nonprofit Organizations Develop And Leverage Social Capital, Nancy K. King

Student Scholarship

Acquiring sufficient resources is a continual struggle for many nonprofit organizations. "Nonprofit organizations that have often needed to accomplish the ir mission with limited resources find themselves stretched to the breaking point," (Peter Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, 2001). The struggle is not limited to financial resources, but includes human resources--board, staff, and volunteer--as well. The concept of social capital may be an important one for nonprofit managers to understand and apply as a means of addressing this problem. Social capital encompasses building networks of relationships, which enhance cooperation, trust, shared vision and resource exchange in creating organizational value (Tsai …
