A Qualitative Study Of A Summer Bridge Program's Contribution To The Persistence Of Underrepresented Students Of Color At A Selective, Predominately White Institution , Patrick Velasquez Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

This proposed presentation will describe a qualitative study of the experiences of ten underrepresented students (African Americans, Chicanos, and Filipinos) of color who attend a public, selective, predominately white, research institution: the University of California, San Diego. More specifically, it will examine the effects of those students' participation in a summer bridge program on their "ease of transition" (Hurtado and Carter, 1997) and their academic and social integration during their freshmen year (Tinto, 1993). In addition, the study provides a context for assessing the students' experiences by also examining their perceptions of the campus climate (Hurtado et al., 1999) at …

A Comparison Of The Role Of Academic Dishonesty Policies Of Several Colleges On The Cheating Behavior Of Engineering And Pre-Engineering Students, Trevor S. Harding, Donald D. Carpenter, Susan M. Montgomery, Nicholas H. Steneck

Materials Engineering

While universities take a variety of approaches in dealing with academic dishonesty, current evidence suggests that institutions with honor codes have a significantly lower level of self-reported cheating as compared to nonhonor code institutions. The authors' goal is to provide greater understanding of what institutional approaches appear to be most effective in minimizing cheating among this specific sub-group. The paper presents a predictive model of the extent of cheating among engineering students at these institutions using a variety of variables, including …

in the context of predominantly white institutions. In this paper concepts such as projection, projective identification, splitting, scapegoating, superiority and denial will be employed to illustrate why racial prejudice is a deeply-rooted collective psychological disorder that affects even educated mental health practitioners. Clinicians have an ethical responsibility to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and empathy when working with minority clients, colleagues, staff and students, to examine and root out their own prejudices, and to encourage others to do the same.

Cross Cultural Issues In Native America: Learning Through Listening , Kurt M. Peters, Dwaine E. Plaza

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

During March 2002 Oregon State University students took a non-traditional approach to learning about cross-cultural issues in Native America. The students lived five days in Burns, Oregon interacting with the Burns Paiute Tribe and non-Indian community stakeholders, thereby developing an understanding of the complex issues facing Oregon's Native American population.
