Gender, Epistemology, And Education: An Exploration Of The Knowledge Construction Of Female And Male Pupils, Joyce E. Many, Francis Howard, Melanie J. Cardell, Geoff Lewis

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study explores gender differences in the knowledge constructed about World War II by 11- and 12-year-old Scottish pupils. Data collected over seven months included field notes, interviews, students' reading and writing, and audiotapes of discussions. Examination revealed the young women's work showcased individuals while the young men framed World War II information using a world view. The findings illustrate the epistemological differences that can exist between our male and female students as they construct their own understanding of topics.

Department Chair Faculty Development Activities And Leadership Practices: University Libraries Faculty Perceptions, Dana Wayne Rippy Boden

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This survey study determined university library faculty perceptions of their department chair’s leadership practices and role in faculty development. Literature on library department chairs has traditionally focused on supervisory and/or management issues. The main focus of the library leadership literature has been deans or directors. Roles of chairs of postsecondary teaching departments have been researched for many years. Academic library faculty differ from teaching department faculty in that: nearly two thirds are female; they enter the profession at an older average age; are employed on a twelve month basis, while being required to meet criteria for a successful bid for …

Book Review - Schooling- The Symbolic Animal: Social And Cultural Dimensions Of Education, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This is an excellent book that brings together under one cover many of the most important ideas of the fields of anthropology and qualitative sociology of education or, to use the editor Bradley Levinson's more expansive phrase, of "the interpretive social sciences" (p. 1). The book is divided into five sections, plus an introduction and an afterword. Each section begins with an introductory essay authored by the section editor. Bradley Levinson is the author of the book's introduction and editor of the first section ("Section I: The Symbolic Animal: Foundations of Education in Cultural Transmission and Acquisition"). Section 11, "Culture, …

Education And Policy In The New Latino Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Stanton Wortham, Enrique G. Murillo Jr. Feb 2002

Education And Policy In The New Latino Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Stanton Wortham, Enrique G. Murillo Jr.

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Increasing numbers of Latinos (many immigrant, and some from elsewhere in the United States) are settling both temporarily and permanently in areas of the United States that have not traditionally been home to Latinos-for example, North Carolina, Maine, Georgia, Indiana, Arkansas, rural Illinois, and near resort communities in Colorado.' Enrique Murillo and Sofia Villenas have called this the New Latino Diaspora (Murillo and Vienas, 1997). Newcomer Latinos are confronted with novel challenges to their senses of identity, status, and community. Instead of arriving in settings, like the Southwest, where Latinos have lived for centuries, those in the New Latino Diaspora …

¿Un Paso Adelante? The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Latino Student Accommodation, And School District Management In Southern Appalachia, Edmund T. Hamann Feb 2002

¿Un Paso Adelante? The Politics Of Bilingual Education, Latino Student Accommodation, And School District Management In Southern Appalachia, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Latino educational policy. More specifically, it describes how a broad but vague consensus regarding the goals of a novel binational partnership hid the differences in various partners' interests and understandings. Looking at both a Georgia superintendent's initial letter to his prospective partners at a Mexican university and then at the experiences of a Mexican university-affiliated bilingual education coordinator, the chapter highlights the interface between culture, policy, and power, illuminating how and why only certain portions of the formal binational accord were enacted and then only in certain ways. The chapter describes the political posturing, advocacy, and maneuvering that shaped the …

The Health Of Nations: The Contribution Of Improved Health To Living Standards, William D. Nordhaus Feb 2002

The Health Of Nations: The Contribution Of Improved Health To Living Standards, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Nations generally measure their economic performance using the yardstick of national output and income. It is not widely recognized, however, that conventional measures of national income and output exclude the value of improvements in the health status of the population. The present study develops a methodology and presents preliminary estimates of how standard economic measures would change if they adequately reflected improvements in health status. The study first discusses the theory of the measurement of national income, examines some of the shortcomings of traditional concepts, and proposes a new concept called ‘health income’ that can be used to incorporate improvements …

Differences Among African American Junior High School Students: The Effects Of Skin Tone On Ethnic Identity, Self-Esteem And Cross-Cultural Behavior, Alfiee M. Breland, Hardin L.K. Coleman, Stephanie Irby Coard, Robbie J. Steward

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

This article explains the results of a study conducted to assess differences among African American adolescents based on skin tone. It was hypothesized that students would demonstrate differences in self-esteem, ethnic identity and cross-cultural coping strategies based on their skin tones. 144 African American adolescents completed research packets. Results of ANOVA did not suggest any differences among the students on selfesteem, ethnic identity, or cross cultural interaction behaviors. However, significant correlations were found between self-esteem and ethnic identity and between self-esteem and cross cultural interaction behaviors. Implications for counseling and education are discussed.

On The Edge Of Scarcity: Environment, Resources, Population, Sustainability, And Conflict, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann

Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration

These essays address one of the most pressing and significant issues that humanity has confronted to date - the lack of life-sustaining resources. Michael N. Dobkowski and Isidor Wallimann establish a disturbing but realistic scenario of the disastrous future that awaits humankind as surplus populations collide with dwindling resources. Authors consider a number of cause-and-effect situations on industrialization, biophysical limits, exponential population growth, and genocide, to name a few. This volume is a critical contribution to the field and will serve as an ideal introduction to courses in the environment, population, resources, genocide, and social conflict.

The Yakunin Vs. Dvorkin Trial And The Emerging Religious Pluralism In Russia, Marat S. Shterin Ph.D., James T. Richardson Ph.D.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This article examines the sociological and historical context of an important legal case which took place in 1997 in Moscow and involved so called "sects and cults" operating in Russia. The case was a libel action brought against Alexander Dvorkin, a functionary of the Moscow Patriarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church, who had published some extremely damning material about a number of newer and smaller faiths in Russia. The plaintiff was the Committee for Protection of Human Rights, headed by noted Soviet dissident, Father Gleb Yakunin. The article discusses the court proceedings in a wider socio-historical context, showing the ways …

Writs To Rights: "Navigability" And The Transformation Of The Common Law In The Nineteenth Century, Daniel J. Hulsebosch Feb 2002

Writs To Rights: "Navigability" And The Transformation Of The Common Law In The Nineteenth Century, Daniel J. Hulsebosch

Cardozo Law Review

This Article argues that nationalist jurists in the early nineteenth century attempted to replace the dominant procedural conception of the common law with a substantive one. Their purpose was to ameliorate the effects of legal federalism. They hoped that the creation of a national body of private law in treatises and judicial reports would encourage legal uniformity among the states. The reorientation of waterway law around the keyword "navigability" offers one example. As this example demonstrates, the project of forging a national jurisprudence was not entirely successful. But it did, indirectly, generate a way for the Supreme Court to extend …
