Public Voices And Public Policy: Changing The Societal Discourse On "Welfare", Vicki Lens Mar 2002

Public Voices And Public Policy: Changing The Societal Discourse On "Welfare", Vicki Lens

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Much of the public discourse on welfare reform is subjective and value laden, a composite of socially constructed stories and myths that support the dominant ideology. This article reports on a study that examines the language used by government officials, poverty experts, advocates and others to discuss welfare reform. Statements made about welfare reform were extracted from the Washington Post and the New York Times and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Dissecting the public language of welfare provides insight into how prevailing ideologies are communicated and reinforced, and how they can be changed.

Endogenous Growth And The Manufacturing Revolution, Hing-Man Leung Mar 2002

Endogenous Growth And The Manufacturing Revolution, Hing-Man Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

Manufacturing is undergoing a revolution. Teamwork, job-rotation, multitasking are superseding the Taylorist mode of organization. The skilled workforce, armed with automated machines, is gradually substituting and replacing the unskilled. At the same time the U.S. economy is experiencing record breaking growth. Is faster growth a consequence of this manufacturing revolution? We study this by inserting dynamic career choice into endogenous growth by human capital accumulation. The answer is affirmative: The gradual substitution of the unskilled by the skilled boosts the long-term growth trend. The model also explains worsening wage inequality between as well as within the skilled groups.

Above The Law: Research Methods, Ethics, And The Law Of Privilege, Geoffrey R. Stone Mar 2002

Above The Law: Research Methods, Ethics, And The Law Of Privilege, Geoffrey R. Stone

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

In Anticipating Law, Palys and Lowman set forth the rationale for a “researcher-participant privilege” and advise scholars how best to preserve the confidentiality of their research in the face of a legal system that has not looked kindly on such a privilege. Although I am inclined to agree with Palys and Lowman that a researcher-participant privilege would, on balance, be beneficial, the case for the privilege is hardly self-evident. Moreover, the advice Palys and Lowman offer researchers in the absence of such a privilege is, in my judgment, unwise.
