Going Beyond The Demonstrable Range In Educational Scholarship: Exploring The Intersections Of Poetry And Research, Liza Hayes Percer Jun 2002

Going Beyond The Demonstrable Range In Educational Scholarship: Exploring The Intersections Of Poetry And Research, Liza Hayes Percer

The Qualitative Report

This essay reflects on experimental writing that incorporates poetry into research. The author supports the move toward research writing that breaks the constraints of traditional academic writing, but raises the concern that such writing must not casually adopt the form and name of poetry without studying the craft. Along these lines, she suggests that in order for work that introduces poetry into research to be done effectively, researchers must study the craft of writing poetry as critically as they study the craft of writing research. Finally, the author suggests that instead of attempting to map poetry onto research, researchers may …

The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner Jun 2002

The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner

The Qualitative Report

This philosophical paper suggests that almost all academic research, including qualitative research, is conducted under the influence of a "technicity paradigm" which values objectivity, generalisability and rationality. This paper explores, from a Heideggerian perspective, the fundamental characteristics of research under the influence of technicity and discusses how these characteristics manifest in qualitative research. It includes a reflection on what qualitative research might be like if it could escape the influence of technicity and realise its potential for inclusive and relevant knowledge making.

Getting At The Moral Leadership Of Education Deans, Shelley B. Wepner, Antonia D'Onofrio, Bernice Willis, Stephen C. Wilhite Jun 2002

Getting At The Moral Leadership Of Education Deans, Shelley B. Wepner, Antonia D'Onofrio, Bernice Willis, Stephen C. Wilhite

The Qualitative Report

Vignettes were used to prompt four education deans to think aloud about ways in which they would resolve problems with embedded moral issues. Thematic coding was used to analyze the interview texts that had been tape recorded and transcribed. There was general support for the two moral themes of holding to broad social ideals and negotiating for mutually acceptable outcomes, but individual expressions of specific strategies and actions differed. The results of this study support a multi-dimensional approach to the study of the leadership of deans that simultaneously examines the moral, social, intellectual and emotional aspects of problem solving. The …

"Planned Barriers" Against Destructive Psychological Processes In Care Organizations, Gurli Fyhr Jun 2002

"Planned Barriers" Against Destructive Psychological Processes In Care Organizations, Gurli Fyhr

The Qualitative Report

This is the first study in a long-term qualitative, theory generating, research project aimed at uncovering conditions that facilitate development of destructive psychological processes in care organizations. Special focus was put on three previously identified problem areas, i.e., staff privileges, conflicting educational traditions/cultures among staff, and psychological reparative work on the part of the staff. A special approved home for teenage boys with serious psychosocial, drug and criminal problems was studied. The strategy used was grounded theory together with abductive reasoning. Data were collected using institutional documents, questionnaires and individual psychotherapeutic interviews. In spite of a target group with serious …

Research As A Learning Experience: A Phenomenological Explication, Charlotte Pietersen Jun 2002

Research As A Learning Experience: A Phenomenological Explication, Charlotte Pietersen

The Qualitative Report

A phenomenological method was employed to explore the learning experiences of seven honours psychology learners who have completed research projects. The research event was experienced as a learning adventure, a period of personal growth, and also lead to a strong appreciation of the differences between doing research in practice and research as described in texts. They regarded time management and problem solving skills as important prerequisites to successful research. Findings provide guidelines for academics involved in the research training of learners and are a useful source of information, to provide insight into and alert learners to the challenges of research.

Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas Jun 2002

Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The foundations of human inequality lie in the fact of human diversity, or in the human tendency to differentiate from some while associating with others to form groups. The diversity which results from association and differentiation makes equality unattainable. Diversity and equality are incompatible, and attempts to promote one can only be made at the expense of the other. In these circumstances, we should abandon the ideal of equality as incapable of offering us an adequate understanding of the nature of the good society.

The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier Jun 2002

The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social exchange and evolutionary models of mate selection incorporate economic assumptions but have not considered a key distinction between necessities and luxuries. This distinction can clarify an apparent paradox: Status and attractiveness, though emphasized by many researchers, are not typically rated highly by research participants. Three studies supported the hypothesis that women and men first ensure sufficient levels of necessities in potential mates before considering many other characteristics rated as more important in prior surveys. In Studies 1 and 2, participants designed ideal long-term mates, purchasing various characteristics with 3 different budgets. Study 3 used a mate-screening paradigm and showed …

Cooperative Extension And Faith-Based Organizations: Building Social Capital, Esther Prins, D Merrill Ewert Jun 2002

Cooperative Extension And Faith-Based Organizations: Building Social Capital, Esther Prins, D Merrill Ewert

Journal of Extension

This article explores the historical relationship between Cooperative Extension and faith-based organizations. Using historical texts, the authors show that since the passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914, Cooperative Extension has worked with faith-based organizations, such as congregations, to promote community renewal. Extension and congregations--then and now--share a deep commitment to building community. The authors conclude that by remembering its historical roots, Extension can renew a vision for creating a just, democratic society. In this way, Extension can help create healthier communities.

Community Supported Agriculture (Csa): Building Community Among Farmers And Non-Farmers, Jeff Sharp, Eric Imerman, Greg Peters Jun 2002

Community Supported Agriculture (Csa): Building Community Among Farmers And Non-Farmers, Jeff Sharp, Eric Imerman, Greg Peters

Journal of Extension

Conflict at the rural-urban interface may often be due to a lack of social connections or communication between farmers and non-farmers. Extension educators may be at a loss as to how to bring these two groups together. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), or a variation of CSA, may be one avenue for developing connections. Findings from a qualitative study of a Midwestern CSA reveal a number of ways CSA met the goals of participants while also building community among farmers and non-farmers. Extension personnel might promote CSA at the rural-urban interface to build community and support for local agriculture.

Participation And Resistance: Project Success In Telal Zinhom, Maysa Abbas Ayoub

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The main concern of this thesis is the different strategies that the government adopts in the process of upgrading or redeveloping squatter areas. The thesis studies two projects: a redevelopment project that applied a topdown approach and an upgrading project that applied a participatory approach. This thesis focuses on the relation between the project and the people arguing that there is a negative correlation between participation and resistance. The thesis shows the ways in which the adoption of an un-participatory approach in a development projects creates resistance on the part of the beneficiaries, which consequently negatively affects the success of …

A Successful Portable Computer Lab Training Program, Robert L. Parsons, Gregory D. Hanson, Timothy J. Beck, Andrew B. Martin

Journal of Extension

Penn State Cooperative Extension and the Pennsylvania Farm Credit System joined forces to fund a portable computer laboratory. A simplified lab management procedure allowed Extension agents to offer 33 computer operation workshops for 300 participants at minimal participant cost. Participants indicated their future use of computers would focus on farm financial, crop, and livestock management. Although considerable competence was gained, more than 50% viewed themselves with poor to moderate computer skills at the end of the workshops. The lab has enabled agents to contact a preciously under-served population as 54% of the participants had not attended any Extension workshops in …

Increasing Transit Ridership: Lessons From The Most Successful Transit Systems In The 1990s, Mti Report-01-22, Brian D. Taylor, Peter J. Haas, Brent Boyd, Daniel Baldwin Hess, Hiroyuki Iseki, Allison Yoh

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study systematically examines recent trends in public transit ridership in the U.S. during the 1990s. Specifically, this analysis focuses on agencies that increased ridership during the latter half of the decade. While transit ridership increased steadily by 13 percent nationwide between 1995 and 1999, not all systems experienced ridership growth equally. While some agencies increased ridership dramatically, some did so only minimally, and still others lost riders. What sets these agencies apart from each other? What explains the uneven growth in ridership?

The Nasserist Work Ethic And The Spirit Of State Capitalism, Willa Newton Thayer

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines Egyptian state discourse about and directed at labor during the years 1952-1967, focusing on elements that could be said to comprise a "work ethic" promoted by the state to workers. A work ethic is conceptualized as comprising the individual's approach to their job, the way they interact with management/capitalists and the role of labor within the nation. Speeches by Gama! Abdel-Nasser, articles from the daily newspaper AlAhram and Al- 'Umaal, a monthly magazine of the Federation of Labor Syndicates are the sources of discourse used. Samples comprising material relevant to the three aforementioned categories were culled from …

Siva Mahadeva: Suatu Analisis Ikonografi Di Jawa Masa Hindu-Buddha, Ratnaesih Maulana

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The iconographic analysis of the deities on the “height measurement” showed that the tala measurement of the Javanese statues are not so different from those of the Indian “tala measurement”, i.e. the uttama-dasa-tala. The similarity between the Javanese Siva Mahadeva’s iconometry and the Siva Mahadeva statues in India showed that the Siva Mahadeva statues in Java have the same role with the Indian Siva Mahadeva statues. Among the 43 general laksanas of Siva Mahadeva, the camara (fl ywisk) is the most important one (about 21,2644%). However, in India the camara is not always belonged to Siva Mahadeva, because we found …
