Using Latent Semantic Analysis To Assess Reader Strategies, Joseph P. Magliano, Katja Wiemer-Hastings, Keith K. Millis, Brenton D.. Muñoz, Danielle Ncnamara

Psychology Faculty Publications

We tested a computer-based procedure for assessing reader strategies that was based on verbal protocols that utilized latent semantic analysis (LSA). Students were given self-explanation-reading training (SERT), which teaches strategies that facilitate self-explanation during reading, such as elaboration based on world knowledge and bridging between text sentences. During a computerized version of SERT practice, students read texts and typed self-explanations into a computer after each sentence. The use of SERT strategies during this practice was assessed by determining the extent to which students used the information in the current sentence versus the prior text or world knowledge in their self-explanations. …

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2002

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This article proposes that the rule of law can be understood as a set of conditions that rational actors would impose on any authority they would create to act in their stead in creating and administering legally binding rules. The authority and obligation associated with law derive from this fundamental convention, and the principles of the rule of law are the conditions of that agreement, which become thereby governing principles to which legislatures, judges, and enforcement agencies can be held in their official actions. These generally recognized standards are inherent in this conventionalist concept of law in the sense that …

Cave Breakdown By Vadose Weathering, R. A. L. Osborne Jan 2002

Cave Breakdown By Vadose Weathering, R. A. L. Osborne

International Journal of Speleology

Vadose weathering is a significant mechanism for initiating breakdown in caves. Vadose weathering of ore bodies, mineral veins, palaeokarst deposits, non-carbonate keystones and impure, altered or fractured bedrock, which is intersected by caves, will frequently result in breakdown. Breakdown is an active, ongoing process. Breakdown occurs throughout the vadose zone, and is not restricted to large diameter passages, or to cave ceilings. The surfaces of disarticulated blocks are commonly coated, rather than having fresh broken faces, and blocks continue to disintegrate after separating from the bedrock. Not only gypsum, but also hydromagnesite and aragonite are responsible for crystal wedging. It …

Mycobacterium Mucogenicum Isolated From A Patient With Granulomatous Hepatitis, Mark R. Goldblatt, Julie A. Ribes Jan 2002

Mycobacterium Mucogenicum Isolated From A Patient With Granulomatous Hepatitis, Mark R. Goldblatt, Julie A. Ribes

Student Publications

Mycobacterium mucogenicum is a recently characterized, rapid-growing mycobacteria rarely seen in human infections. We describe the case of a 51-year-old man with rapidly progressive granulomatous hepatitis caused by M mucogenicum. Although premortem evaluation failed to identify an etiologic agent, autopsy liver cultures produced smooth, rapid-growing mycobacterial colonies. Biochemical, growth, and cell wall fatty acid characteristics were consistent with the identification of M mucogenicum.

How Long, Oh Lord, How Long? James E. Talmage And The Great War, Richard Bennett Jan 2002

How Long, Oh Lord, How Long? James E. Talmage And The Great War, Richard Bennett

Faculty Publications

What is it that is happening? A war greater in area and scale and more fearful in carnage, than any that has ever been since life on the round world began. Five months--no more--have passed since the first gun was fired, and already the list of men who were strong, healthy, capable, keen, five short months ago, and who are now stark in death, outnumbers anything of its kind in human history. And to reckon up the load of sheer blank sorrow in innumerable homes, and the actual but incidental war sufferings, short of death, or possibly worse than death, …

The Role And Uses Of Market Research In Small And Medium Sized Exporting Companies, Jasmine Elizabeth Mary Williams Jan 2002

The Role And Uses Of Market Research In Small And Medium Sized Exporting Companies, Jasmine Elizabeth Mary Williams

Plymouth Business School Theses

Wise use of information leads to knowledge, and with that knowledge comes power (van der Vegt 1998). The importance of information to marketing success is well documented (Kohli and Jaworski 1990), and recent years have seen a burgeoning academic interest in the area of export market information and research (EMI/R) use (Diamantopoulos and Souchon 1999). This dissertation comprises the results of, and reflections on, an investigation into the EMIR activities of small and medium-sized industrial enterprises in the UK. A review of the literature uncovers the unique, informal and personal nature of these activities. The fieldwork takes a grounded approach, …

Derivation Of The Required Elements For A Definition Of The Term Middleware, Maya Mathew Jan 2002

Derivation Of The Required Elements For A Definition Of The Term Middleware, Maya Mathew

Theses

Thirteen contemporary definitions of Middleware were analyzed. The definitions agree that any software that can do the following should be classified as Middleware (1) provide service that provides transparent application-to-application interaction across the network, (2) act as a service provider for distributed applications, and (3) provide services that are primarily used by distributed applications (e.g., RPCs, ORBs, Directories, name-resolution services, etc.) Most definitions agree that Middleware is that level of software required to achieve platform, location, and network transparency. There is some discrepancy about the OSI levels at which middleware operates. The majority of definitions limit it to levels 5, …

Implementation Of The Iso 14001 Environmental Management System Can Be Feasible At Small Us Chemical Companies, Matthew Barmasse Jan 2002

Implementation Of The Iso 14001 Environmental Management System Can Be Feasible At Small Us Chemical Companies, Matthew Barmasse

Theses

Small US Chemical companies are faced with a new conundrum, Is it feasible to implement ISO 14001 in addition to existing commitments to implement Responsible Care? This paper studies this question by reviewing the available literature sources, conducting industry trade association interviews, and through limited interviewing of small US chemical companies. The chemical industry currently faces many challenges including increasing demands by society and customers for improved environmental performance. Staffs and budgets are very tight in a small company. Upper management fears the addition of one more program to their already overworked staff. Significant agreement was found in the literary …

Effects Of Nonequilibrium Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas On The Heterotrophic Pathways Of Bacteria And On Their Cell Morphology, Mounir Laroussi, J. Paul Richardson, Fred C. Dobbs Jan 2002

Effects Of Nonequilibrium Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas On The Heterotrophic Pathways Of Bacteria And On Their Cell Morphology, Mounir Laroussi, J. Paul Richardson, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

To date, most research on the interaction of nonequilibrium, atmospheric pressure plasma discharges with bacteria has concentrated on the germicidal effects. Therefore, published results deal mainly with killing efficacy and little attention is given to physical mechanisms and biochemical pathways and their potential alterations when cells of microorganisms are exposed to the plasma. In this letter, an attempt to investigate the effects of plasma exposure on the biochemical pathways of bacteria is presented. In addition, using electron microscopy, we investigate if any gross morphological changes take place when cells are exposed to a lethal dose of plasma. We are testing …
