The Many Uses Of Digitized Oral History Collections: Implications For Design, Dagobert Soergel, Douglas W. Oard, Samuel Gustman, Lydia Fraser, Jinmook Kim, Joan Meyer, Elizabeth Proffen, Theresa Sartori

Faculty Publications

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. The results show a wide variety of users and uses of …

The Expiration Of The Civil Justice Reform Act Of 1990, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2002

The Expiration Of The Civil Justice Reform Act Of 1990, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

Ever since the United States Congress passed the Civil Justice Reform Act of 1990 (CJRA), a minor mystery of federal court jurisprudence has been whether - and if so, precisely when - that significant and controversial legislation expired. The measure instituted unprecedented nationwide experimentation with procedures that lawmakers intended to decrease cost and delay in civil litigation, but the statute's implementation additionally balkanized federal practice and procedure.

Transverse Group Actions On Bundles, Ian M. Anderson, Mark E. Fels Jan 2002

Transverse Group Actions On Bundles, Ian M. Anderson, Mark E. Fels

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

An action of a Lie group G on a bundle is said to be transverse if it is projectable and if the orbits of G on E are diffeomorphic under π to the orbits of G on M. Transverse group actions on bundles are completely classified in terms of the pullback bundle construction for G-invariant maps. This classification result is used to give a full characterization of the G invariant sections of E for projectable group actions.

Balancing Act : Public Employees And Free Speech, David L. Hudson Jr. Jan 2002

Balancing Act : Public Employees And Free Speech, David L. Hudson Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

More than 20 million Americans work for federal, state or local governments. Sometimes these employees are disciplined for speaking out against government corruption, belonging to a particular political party, criticizing agency policy or engaging in private conduct of which the employer disapproves. Granted, government employers need some leeway when dealing with their employees. After all, the primary function of a government agency is to provide efficient services to the public, and if a government employer were second-guessed every time it disciplined a public employee, services could grind to a halt. On the other hand, such employers do not have unfettered …

The Courts’ Inconsistent Treatment Of Bethel V. Fraser And The Curtailment Of Student Rights, David L. Hudson Jr., John E. Ferguson Jr. Jan 2002

The Courts’ Inconsistent Treatment Of Bethel V. Fraser And The Curtailment Of Student Rights, David L. Hudson Jr., John E. Ferguson Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

The majority of courts have cited Bethel v. Fraser in such a way as to give public school officials free reign to censor vulgar, lewd, or plainly offensive student speech. Some courts have gone a step further and prohibited student speech that contains offensive ideas. This article seeks to explain how the Fraser decision curtailed student rights recognized in the Supreme Court's last pure student speech case, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District.

Three Governors: Herman Talmadge, The Georgia Supreme Court And The Gubernatorial Election Of 1946, Lucian E. Dervan Jan 2002

Three Governors: Herman Talmadge, The Georgia Supreme Court And The Gubernatorial Election Of 1946, Lucian E. Dervan

Law Faculty Scholarship

Herman Talmadge, who died March 21, 2002, was a governor, senator, and Georgia icon who controlled state politics for much of the last half of the 20th century. While many events in Talmadge’s life deserve attention, one event in particular stands out amongst the trials and tribulations, victories and scandals in this long American political life. In 1946, the Georgia gubernatorial election brought a state government to its knees, a state Supreme Court to the height of its power and Talmadge into the national spotlight as a revolver toting aspiring governor.

Prevalence And Risk Factors For Vaginal Candida Colonization In Women With Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes, Ella M. De Leon, Scott J. Jacober, Jack D. Sobel, Betsy Foxman

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Diabetes mellitus increases the rate of vaginal colonization and infection with Candida species

Methods

We surveyed women with diabetes receiving care at either an urban or suburban diabetes clinic to examine the relationship between vaginal Candida colonization, diabetes type and duration, and HbA1c level. 101 participants completed the self-administered questionnaire and self-collected a vaginal swab for Candida culture. Candida colonization was similar by age and race.

Results

Type 1 diabetics were three times as likely as type 2 diabetics to be colonized with any Candida species (OR = 3.4; 95% CI: 1.03, 11.41; p = 0.04); even …

Silicon-Methoxide-Modified Clays And Their Polystyrene Nanocomposites, Jin Zhu, Paul Start, Kenneth A. Mauritz, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2002

Silicon-Methoxide-Modified Clays And Their Polystyrene Nanocomposites, Jin Zhu, Paul Start, Kenneth A. Mauritz, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Silicon-methoxide-containing modified clays were obtained through cationic exchange between the sodium clay and the ammoniumcation of [3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl]octadecyldimethylammoniumchloride (Si18). The nanocomposites were prepared through bulk polymerization of styrene in which the Si18 clay was dispersed. The silicon-methoxide offers the possibility of reaction between the methoxide and a clay hydroxyl group to link together the cation and the clay. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Their thermal stability and flame retardancy were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimetry. Linkage between the silicon and the clay apparently occurs in the clay but …

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring Of Pmma Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Jin Zhu, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang Jan 2002

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring Of Pmma Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Jin Zhu, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites have been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is clear that as the polymer undergoes thermal degradation, the clay accumulates at the surface and the barrier properties which result from this clay accumulation have been described as the reason for the decreased heat release rate for nanocomposites. The surface composition of the clay changes as the nanocomposite is heated and the changes are affected by the organic-modification that were applied to the clay in order to prepare the nanocomposite.

Fiduciary Duties, Consolidated Returns, And Fairness, Bruce A. Mcgovern Jan 2002

Fiduciary Duties, Consolidated Returns, And Fairness, Bruce A. Mcgovern

Nebraska Law Review

Conflicts of interest between parent and subsidiary corporations often present particularly difficult issues to which state corporate law attempts to respond. This article addresses one of these issues: the appropriate allocation between a parent and its subsidiary of federal tax savings that arise when the two corporations file a consolidated tax return. Tax savings in this context arise because filing a consolidated return permits the corporations that join in the return to combine their income, deductions, credits, and other tax attributes and determine their federal tax liability largely as if they were divisions of a single corporation. For example, if …

It is also taught among us that one holy Christian church will be and remain focever. This is the assembly of all believers [or "saints"] among whom the Gospel is preached in its purity and the holy sacraments are administered according to the Gospel. For it is sufficient [satis est] for the true unity of the Christian church that the Gospel be preached in conformity with a pure understanding of it and that the sacraments be administered in accordance with the divine Word [or, "are administered rightly"]. It is not necessary for the true unity of the Christian church …

Abigail And Mercy, Amber Moulton Jan 2002

Abigail And Mercy, Amber Moulton

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The study of history, by its nature, is constantly evolving, as contemporary society reestablishes values and examines history under a new scope of social priorities. During this process of historical evolution, it is not events alone that take on new importance, but also the portrayal of historical figures themselves, personalities and influences changing from biography to biography over the years. Such has been the case with the historical Abigail Adams, best known for her well-preserved and archived correspondence with her husband, the Revolutionary Founding Father John Adams, among many other acquaintances. Abigail Adams has been portrayed in a number of …

A Majestic Presence: A Study Of The Development Of The Majestic Theater In Gettysburg, Jay Gallagher, Kelly Burnham, Nancy Moll Jan 2002

A Majestic Presence: A Study Of The Development Of The Majestic Theater In Gettysburg, Jay Gallagher, Kelly Burnham, Nancy Moll

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In an era of collective entertainment, before private home entertainment systems, people sought amusement within their communities. One aspect of this community entertainment, the theater, offered a social gathering place. Theaters provided an important dual role for the community—both for entertainment and also a certain amount of public service. Theaters in the 1920s and 1930s, in small towns such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, served a much different purpose than they do today, with a more prominent and more important role within society. In the 1920s and 1930s, Gettysburg had several theaters. The two most prominent were the Majestic and the Strand …

"God Moves In A Mysterious Way": Public Discourse On Providence And The Battle Of Gettysburg, Sarah Marie Andrews

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

This study of public reaction to the Battle of Gettysburg in the context of the wider experience of the American Civil War focuses on the view of Providence in history and war. To that end, this study primarily utilizes documents which were part of the public discourse during the war. This includes two major groups of writings: newspaper editorials and articles and published sermons. This allows a view of the intersecting of religion with the secular world as well as patriotism within in the religious community. Collections from both the Union and the Confederacy have been accessed in an attempt …

The Tavern In Colonial America, Steven Struzinski Jan 2002

The Tavern In Colonial America, Steven Struzinski

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The tavern in Colonial America, or the “ordinary” as it was referred to in Puritan Massachusetts, was a staple in the social, political, and travel lives of colonial citizens from very early in this country’s existence. Samuel Cole in Boston opened the first tavern on March 4, 1634. It was not long before the demand and necessity for taverns in New England, and throughout the colonies, was overwhelming. In 1656 the General Court of Massachusetts held towns accountable with fines if they did not sustain an ordinary.

Redistricting In A Post-Shaw Era: A Small Treatise Accompanied By Districting Guidelines For Legislators, Litigants, And Courts, Katharine Inglis Butler Jan 2002

Redistricting In A Post-Shaw Era: A Small Treatise Accompanied By Districting Guidelines For Legislators, Litigants, And Courts, Katharine Inglis Butler

University of Richmond Law Review

Legislators in jurisdictions with even modest minority populations will find adopting a challenge-resistant redistricting plan to be more difficult than ever before. The problem is how much consideration to give to race. Too little consideration may produce a plan subject to challenge under the Voting Rights Act (the "Act"). Too much consideration may produce a plan subject to challenge on constitutional grounds.
