Modeling The Effects Of Electrode Composition And Pore Structure On The Performance Of Electrochemical Capacitors, Changqing Lin, Branko N. Popov, Harry J. Ploehn

Faculty Publications

This work presents a mathematical model for charge/discharge of electrochemical capacitors that explicitly accounts for particle-packing effects in a composite electrochemical capacitor consisting of hydrous RuO2 nanoparticles dispersed within porous activated carbon. The model is also used to investigate the effect of nonuniform distributions of salt in the electrolyte phase of the electrode in the context of dilute solution theory. We use the model to compare the performance of capacitors with electrodes made from different activated carbons and to investigate the effects of varying carbon content and discharge current density. Even at low discharge current density, concentration polarization in …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Development of sustainable agricultural management systems will depend, in part, on the ability to better use renewable resources, such as animal manure, and to synchronize the levels of soil available N with crop plant needs during the growing season. This study was conducted at the US Meat Animal Research Center in the central USA to determine whether differences in electromagnetic (EM) soil conductivity and available N levels over a growing season can be linked to feedlot manure/compost application and use of a green winter cover crop. A series of soil conductivity maps of a research cornfield were generated using global …

Physiology And Reproduction: Embryonic Development From First Cleavage Through Seventy-Two Hours Incubation In Two Strains Of Pekin Duck (Anas Platyrhynchos), V. Dupuy, B. Nersessian, M. R. Bakst Jan 2002

Physiology And Reproduction: Embryonic Development From First Cleavage Through Seventy-Two Hours Incubation In Two Strains Of Pekin Duck (Anas Platyrhynchos), V. Dupuy, B. Nersessian, M. R. Bakst

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Embryonic mortality is a significant problem plaguing the commercial duck industry worldwide. Yet, an objective means to stage development of the duck embryo is lacking. Such a staging procedure, which is described in this study, is essential for the critical and reproducible assessment of embryo development. The morphological features associated with duck embryo development are very similar to those of the chicken, although the duck embryo develops more slowly. The staging scheme presented here provides objective morphological criteria describing the embryonic development of the duck.

Beet Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Host Plant Preferences For Oviposition, S. M. Greenberg, T. W. Sappington, T.-X. Liu

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), oviposition preferences were determined on five host plants: cabbage (Brassica oleracea capitata L.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in no-choice, two-choice, and five-choice tests. Tests were conducted in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field cages. Oviposition preferences were compared on the basis of two measurements, the proportion of eggs laid on the plants to total that were deposited, and the oviposition preference index defined as [(number of eggs laid on the plant) - (number of eggs laid on …

Detecting Single Wheat Kernels Containing Live Or Dead Insects Using Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Elizabeth B. Maghirang, Floyd E. Dowell, James E. Baker, James E. Throne

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

An automated NIR system was used over a two-month storage period to detect single wheat kernels that contained live or dead internal rice weevils at various stages of growth. Correct classification of sound kernels and kernels containing live pupae, large larvae, medium-sized larvae, and small larvae averaged 94, 92, 84, and 62%, respectively. Pupae + large larvae calibrations were developed using live or dead internal insects. Validation results showed correct classifications ranging from 86 to 96% over the two-month storage period. Thus, wheat kernels containing either live or dead insects can be used to develop calibrations for detecting both live …

Development Of Granular Boric Acid Sugar Baits For House Flies (Diptera: Muscidae), Jerome A. Hogsette, David A. Carlson, Alyce S. Nejame

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Freeze-dried, granular sugar baits containing boric acid as the toxicant were evaluated against house flies, Musca domestica L., in two bioassays with toxicant dose ranges of 3, 5, 7, 8, and 12%, and 3, 5, 9, 17, and 33% boric acid, respectively, calculated and expressed on a dry weight basis. Flies in bioassay 1 were mixed sex and unstarved and flies in bioassay 2 were females only and starved 4 h before testing began. LC50s were 8.97 and 14.33%, and LT50s were 59.75 and 53.34 h in bioassays 1 and 2, respectively. Baits were tested at …

Development Of Hydrotaea Aenescens (Diptera: Muscidae) In Manure Of Unweaned Dairy Calves And Lactating Cows, Jerome Hogsette, Robert Farkas, Reginald Coler Jan 2002

Development Of Hydrotaea Aenescens (Diptera: Muscidae) In Manure Of Unweaned Dairy Calves And Lactating Cows, Jerome Hogsette, Robert Farkas, Reginald Coler

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In laboratory studies performed in the United States and Hungary, the dump fly Hydrotaea aenescens (Wiedemann) was reared successfully in manure of 1- to 8-wk-old dairy calves, and in manure from adult lactating dairy cows. Survival in manure collected from 1-wk-old calves was poor (7.2%), better in manure collected from 2- and 3-wk-old calves (53.5%), and best in manure collected from 4- to 8-wk-old calves (71.4%). Survival in cow manure was slightly lower (47.4%) than that in calf manure. Reasons for different rates of development in the United States and in Hungary, and by calf age are discussed as are …

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong Jan 2002

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong

Theses : Honours

In his elaborative Landbridge 'statement of intent', Western Australian and International poet John Kinsella - whose phenomenal rise since the '90s is now a worldwide literary success story that needs no introduction - asserts a profound interest for the 'pastoral radical' (Kinsella, ed. Kinsella, Landbridge, 1999): “I'm particularly interested in the 'pastoral radical'- in blending the so-called pastoral tradition with the lingui.stically innovative. This 'hybrid' ironises the pastoral construct but allows for genuine movement through rural spaces. Landscape is central to my project - ways of seeing, questions of occupation and space, the position and relevance of the so-called 'lyrical …

Management Prerogatives And Employees' Rights (A General Overview), Emmanuel O. Sales Jan 2002

Management Prerogatives And Employees' Rights (A General Overview), Emmanuel O. Sales

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Management prerogatives and employees' rights appear to be two contradictory and even at first impression, irreconcilable concepts. There is a tug-and-pull between the assertion of a management prerogative and the exercise of an employee's right. In any instance when there is a tug-of-war between prerogative and right, the limits are drawn such that so much would be removed from authority, or that the exercise of a right becomes qualified. This paper will examine the boundaries of management prerogatives in relation to employees' rights. The delineation is determined from jurisprudence, or how the Supreme Court views the dispute between management and …

Decision-Making Model And New Services Development Approach In Telecommunications, Alfredo C. Panizales Jan 2002

Decision-Making Model And New Services Development Approach In Telecommunications, Alfredo C. Panizales

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The study presents a decision-making model and new services development approach in the telecommunications sector. It affirms that Customer Demand, Foreseeing Business, and Technology are the three most important driving factors in the Philippines and in the Asia Pacific Region. The model posits that new services development, initiated by the Business Group is directly influenced by technology push factors and by top management, engineering, marketing and financial considerations. Government Regulatory Body and Foreign Administrations indirectly influence new services development. The study includes thirty-four (34) senior executives from the telecommunications sector who responded in the 2000 Survey. Thirteen (13) respondents are …

A Study Of The Demutualization Of The Philippine Stock Exchange And Its Effect On Stock Return Volatility, Leila Y. Calderon Jan 2002

A Study Of The Demutualization Of The Philippine Stock Exchange And Its Effect On Stock Return Volatility, Leila Y. Calderon

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Stock exchanges all over the world are introducing new ways to increase their capitalization. One of this is through demutualization, where the stock exchange is converted to stockholder based organization for profit taking. The earliest known demutualized stock exchange is in Stockholm in 1993. Through demutualization, the exchange can raise additional capital through the initial public offering. Also, with a demutualized stock exchange, it can compete globally by offering more products and accessing other markets.
