Listening Treatment In The Basic Communication Course Text, Laura A. Janusik, Andrew D. Wolvin Jan 2002

Listening Treatment In The Basic Communication Course Text, Laura A. Janusik, Andrew D. Wolvin

Basic Communication Course Annual

Numerous studies have indicated that listening is instrumental for academic and professional success, and most students receive listening instruction only in the basic communication course. This study analyzed the treatment of listening in the 17 most widely used basic communication course textbooks. The majority of the textbooks did devote at least one chapter to listening; however, the treatment was generally light, atheoretical, and lacked substantive listening scholarship.

Immigration Sponsorship Rights For Gay And Lesbian Couples: Defining Partnerships, Desiree Alonso Jan 2002

Immigration Sponsorship Rights For Gay And Lesbian Couples: Defining Partnerships, Desiree Alonso

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note advocates for the passage of the Permanent Partners Immigration Act (PPIA) to address the inequality faced by same-sex couples in U.S. immigration law. It argues that the PPIA would provide a parallel system allowing same-sex partners to sponsor each other for immigration without challenging the traditional definition of marriage under the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The note emphasizes the importance of recognizing same-sex partnerships to uphold the principle of family reunification and equality.

A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman Jan 2002

A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) should be legally recognized as a severe mental disorder, allowing defendants to use a diminished capacity defense in cases of accidental filicide. The author critiques the legal system's inconsistent treatment of MSBP, which often focuses on the physical harm to the child while neglecting the mother's mental state. By acknowledging MSBP as a psychiatric disorder, the law could achieve more nuanced outcomes that consider both the act and the defendant's mental condition, reducing stigma and promoting fairness in criminal liability assessments.

How Should Legislation Deal With Children As The Victims And Perpetrators Of Cyberstalking?, Kimberly Wingteung Seto

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that current federal and state laws are inadequate to address the growing issue of cyberstalking, particularly due to outdated legal standards and the unique challenges posed by online anonymity. It emphasizes the vulnerability of children to cyberstalking and advocates for legal reforms, increased penalties, and improved education for parents and law enforcement to effectively combat this issue.

A Qualitative Analysis Of Figural Memory Performance In Persons With Epilepsy, Deborah Schrager Hoffnung Jan 2002

A Qualitative Analysis Of Figural Memory Performance In Persons With Epilepsy, Deborah Schrager Hoffnung

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined nonverbal memory in patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) on a figural reproduction task, the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). The Boston Qualitative Scoring System (BQSS) was used to examine whether qualitative features of ROCF performance could discriminate between those with right and left TLE. As predicted, seizure groups did not differ on a standard quantitative scoring system for the ROCF. Contrary to prediction, the right TLE group did not perform more poorly on BQSS measures of quality or organization, and they did not have greater difficulty recalling the figure after a delay. There was a trend …

Searching For Connections Between Domestic Violence And Social Conflict In Northern Ireland, Jeffrey M. Roberts Jan 2002

Searching For Connections Between Domestic Violence And Social Conflict In Northern Ireland, Jeffrey M. Roberts

School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations

This Independent Problem Analysis explores the connection between domestic violence and social conflict in Northern Ireland. Specifically, it will review selected literature on domestic violence and examine social and cultural attitudes regarding violence in Northern Ireland. It will then analyze whether and how occurrences of domestic violence in Northern Ireland are affected by broader social conflict.

This analysis will begin with an overview of conflict theories that will be used to show depth of understanding in the conflict discipline and to determine a specific direction for the problem analysis. This will be followed by an exploration of factors that combine …

A Positive Relationship Between Religious Faith And Forgiveness: Faith In The Absence Of Data?, Lisa M. Edwards, Regina H. Lapp-Rincker, Jeana L. Magyar-Moe, Jason D. Rehfeldt, Jamie A. Ryder, Jill C. Brown, Shane J. Lopez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Religious faith and beliefs appear to play an important role in the lives of many individuals and are the topic of much research. The present study investigated the relationship between religious faith and forgiveness in a sample (n = 196) of college students. Students were asked to complete the Heartland Forgiveness Scale and the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire. Analyses of scores on both measures revealed a positive, significant correlation between these constructs, suggesting that there is a meaningful relationship between religious faith and the tendency to forgive. Implications and directions for further research are discussed.

Free Will And Responsiblity: Indeterminism And Its Problems, Troy Dwayne Fassbender Jan 2002

Free Will And Responsiblity: Indeterminism And Its Problems, Troy Dwayne Fassbender

LSU Master's Theses

This work is devoted to criticisms of libertarian philosophers who attempt to provide an account of agent freedom that relies solely upon indeterminism. First, the philosophy of Robert Kane is examined. I argue that Kane's account does not succeed as an intelligible libertarian account of freedom and at best makes compatibilist accounts more intuitive. I next examine objections to indeterminist accounts as lodged by Galen Strawson, Thomas Nagel, Daniel Dennett, and Richard Double before turning to an analysis of a debate among Peter van Inwagen, John Martin Fischer and Mark Ravizza. Van Inwagen argues that we are seldom able to …

Family Violence Exposure And Family Relationship Skills In Adolescents Exposed To Community Violence, Monique M. Leblanc Jan 2002

Family Violence Exposure And Family Relationship Skills In Adolescents Exposed To Community Violence, Monique M. Leblanc

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Community violence exposure has been associated with a plethora of adverse aftereffects; therefore, greater understanding of compensatory and potentiating factors associated with exposure is essential for effective intervention and prevention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations among school violence exposure, neighborhood violence exposure, family violence exposure, parent-adolescent relationship skills, and outcomes. Participants consisted of 100 adolescents, aged 13 to 20 years. Adolescents completed the Screen for Adolescent Violence Exposure, the Behavior Assessment System for Children- Self Report of Personality, the Child Health and Illness Profile- Adolescent Edition, and the Parent-Adolescent Relationship Questionnaire. Parents/guardians completed the Behavior …

Qualitative Scoring Of The Rey 15-Item Memory Test In A Forensic Population, James A. Martin Jan 2002

Qualitative Scoring Of The Rey 15-Item Memory Test In A Forensic Population, James A. Martin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Several studies have examined the ability of the Rey 15-Item Memory Test (MFIT) to identify malingering of memory problems among a variety of psychiatric and neurologically impaired populations. The consensus has been that the quantitative scoring method is overly sensitive to genuine memory impairment and lacks sensitivity to simulated amnesia. However, a reexamination of these studies and available data indicates the MFIT is both valid and effective at identifying actual malingerers among civil litigants, and a number of these studies were limited through inappropriate inclusion of severely impaired patients and research designs of questionable validity. Also, the performance of a …

The Relation Between Electrodermal Activity In Sleep, Negative Activity Affect, And Stress In Patients Referred For Nocturnal Polysomnography, Laura Elaine Lajos Jan 2002

The Relation Between Electrodermal Activity In Sleep, Negative Activity Affect, And Stress In Patients Referred For Nocturnal Polysomnography, Laura Elaine Lajos

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The study of electrodermal activity (EDA) began over a century ago, and the phenomenon has been linked to many aspects of emotion, arousal and attention. A subset of studies has focused on the occurrence of EDA in sleep (EDAS). These investigations have led to definitive conclusions on when EDA is most likely to occur during the sleep cycle, i.e., slow-wave sleep. Studies have also shown that at least moderate stress tends to increase EDAS, but these studies have fallen short methodologically. The aims of the present study were: (a) to investigate the relation of negative affect and stress to EDAS, …

Recovering From Drugs And The Drug War: An Achievable Public Health Alternative, Eric Blumenson Jan 2002

Recovering From Drugs And The Drug War: An Achievable Public Health Alternative, Eric Blumenson

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

For three decades our War on Drugs has characterized illicit drug use as a law enforcement problem, to be addressed primarily through interdiction and criminal punishment. This policy has multiplied the number of imprisoned Americans, but our drug problem remains as entrenched as ever, and both voters and policy experts appear ready to embrace an alternative public health approach. Such an approach recognizes that a substantial number of Americans will continue to use drugs for the foreseeable future, and seeks to minimize the risks these people face from their drug habits. This requires programs and funding for treatment, education, and …

Quality Control In Online Courses: Using A Social Constructivist Framework, Heidi Schweizer, Joan Whipp, Carrianne H. Hayslett

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

There has recently been increased interest in the quality of online courses. Faculty from the School of Education at Marquette University suggest using social constructivist theories in the design and development of online courses and in the training and pedagogy of online instructors to ensure quality in online courses. Quality can be designed into online courses by focusing on complex tasks, using multiple perspectives, establishing a learning community, encouraging the social negotiation of meaning and providing assistance for learners at various levels. While good design can go a long way to ensure quality in online courses, the quality of the …

The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero Jan 2002

The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero

Articles

This paper aims to explore in detail the issue of advertising intent, with particular reference to the child. The literature review examines the importance of age, and cognitive and social development in this field, and considers whether or not children can distinguish between television programming and advertising. What the literature review illustrates is that research studies thus far have conflicting viewpoints on these areas. Within the research to date, there are also a number of important issues which do not seem to be addressed. Most notably, there is little research which considers the impact of advertising upon children, from the …

Lessons From Martin: The Ada And Athletics Don't Mix, Thomas E. Green Jan 2002

Lessons From Martin: The Ada And Athletics Don't Mix, Thomas E. Green

Journal of Law and Health

Martin is a professional golfer in his twenties who is stricken by Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome. This disability makes it medically impossible for him to play golf without the use of a golf cart. Martin sued the PGA Tour in 1997 after his request to use a golf cart in a tour event was denied. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the Ninth Circuit's ruling allowing Martin to use a golf cart for PGA events. In another case, after initially allowing the golfer, Olinger, to compete in the qualifying rounds, the District Court, and subsequently the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, …

A Primer On Organ Donation , Louis J. Sirico Jr. Jan 2002

A Primer On Organ Donation , Louis J. Sirico Jr.

Journal of Law and Health

As organ donation gains increasing attention in our society, attorneys have an obligation to stay current on the issues so that they can properly advise two groups of clients: those who may need transplants and those who, if given reliable information, might consider becoming organ donors. A client in need of a transplant may wish advice about putting his or her affairs in order, and a client who retains an attorney to draft a will may be interested in learning about organ donation. Attorneys should know what a potential organ recipient should consider, how donated organs are allocated, how to …

Property Interests In Cadaverous Organs: Changes To Ohio Anatomical Gift Law And The Erosion Of Family Rights, Melissa A. W. Stickney Jan 2002

Property Interests In Cadaverous Organs: Changes To Ohio Anatomical Gift Law And The Erosion Of Family Rights, Melissa A. W. Stickney

Journal of Law and Health

This note examines how Ohio anatomical gift laws have been interpreted to grant a property right to the next of kin in the decedent’s cadaverous organs. Part II of this note briefly examines the origins of anatomical gift law in the United States and in Ohio. Part III examines the codification of Ohio common law and the adoption of the 1969 Uniform Anatomical Gift Act as the foundation of Ohio’s anatomical gift laws. Part IV analyzes post 1969 Ohio cases that directly or indirectly help interpret Ohio’s anatomical gift laws, with a particular focus on the legal reasoning in Brotherton …

Resolving Disputes Over Excess Frozen Embryos Through The Confines Of Property And Contract Law, Shelly R. Petralia Jan 2002

Resolving Disputes Over Excess Frozen Embryos Through The Confines Of Property And Contract Law, Shelly R. Petralia

Journal of Law and Health

This Article addresses the conflicts that arise due to the increased number of cryogenically frozen embryos produced during in vitro fertilization (IVF). Part I discusses the IVF process, in general. While it recognizes the man's role in the process, it focuses primarily on the physical and emotional hardships that are placed on the woman. Part I also gives the backdrop of the case law in the area of embryo distribution. Part II introduces the idea that an embryo should be reduced to private property, through utilization of the labor and economic theories of property law. Additionally, an embryo's use, rather …

Rural Whiteness, Realizing Race: White Race Identity In Rural Northwestern Pennsylvania: A Critical Review, Gloria Adams Jan 2002

Rural Whiteness, Realizing Race: White Race Identity In Rural Northwestern Pennsylvania: A Critical Review, Gloria Adams

Honors Papers

In studying race, specifically whiteness, in northwestern Pennsylvania, I am speaking of my own experiences and my own identity. In searching for the truth behind race issues and white identity in this place, I must implicate myself in perpetuating racist attitudes and social structures, if not only for my own ignorance of diverse cultures. Like all whites I cannot escape my white skin and the privileges I receive because of it, but I can question that privilege, in an effort to understand my position and enact anti-racist change. This ethnography of whiteness in northwestern PA is as much about myself …

Word Is Born: Critical Gaps And The Poetics Of Hip-Hop, Kabir Hamid Jan 2002

Word Is Born: Critical Gaps And The Poetics Of Hip-Hop, Kabir Hamid

Honors Papers

I grew up listening to hip-hop music. Although I lived across the country from its birthplace, I would immerse myself in its sounds during the day and especially at night when my brother would play tapes before we fell asleep in our bunk beds. At a certain point in high school, I became obsessed with the music's lyrics. I was continually astonished by the cleverness, rhyme ability and edginess of the emcees I listened to. My admiration for hip-hop music developed alongside my admiration for the great authors I was reading at that time: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Herman Hesse and …

All Hands Withdrawn: Touch And The Failure Of Intimacy In A Passage To India And The Pisan Cantos, Douglas Diesenhaus Jan 2002

All Hands Withdrawn: Touch And The Failure Of Intimacy In A Passage To India And The Pisan Cantos, Douglas Diesenhaus

Honors Papers

Have there ever been two more dissimilar writers in literary history than E.M. Forster and Ezra Pound? Forster, fatherless from the age of twenty-two months, educated in the British public school system and at Cambridge, influenced by the Apostles and the Bloomsbury group, wrote from within the shaping pressures of English tradition. In pictures and paintings, he appears always out of place or fatigued, with his head falling back against a cushion or chair. With his slight build, dainty style, and small, roundish head projecting forward into his nose, he fails to cut much of a figure next to the …

“Let your home know where your heart is.” (Billboard advertisement for cellular phone) The setting is a retirement home for the elderly. Wilfred enters the veranda in search of two close friends. He is in luck, they are both present. But alas, one is lost to her Walkman and the other is engrossed in his book. Neither notices Wilfred's presence. Frustrated, Wilfred is left to stare silently into space. Such is the beginning of Ronald Harwood's London play, Quartet. Young or old, we instantly identify with the scene. How often do we enter a room to find family, friends or …
