Literature Review : Using Humor With Children, Carol J. Aswegen Thornhill Jan 2002

Literature Review : Using Humor With Children, Carol J. Aswegen Thornhill

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to explore and review the literature on humor, particularly as it relates to interactions with children. Often adults, whether they are parents or teachers, devalue the use of humor in dealing with children. Research supports that humor is a beneficial component of social interactions, especially with children. Studies have shown that children are receptive to humor beginning at very young ages, and that their sense of humor is developed and finely tuned as they mature. Findings show that by using humor in social situations, stress levels can be de-escalated, defensive reactions are reduced--which in …

Fat Is Not A Four-Letter Word : Examining The Factors That Contribute To Eating Disorders In Adolescent Females And The Role Of School Counselors In Prevention And Treatment, Megan B. Tressel

Graduate Research Papers

An eating disorder is an obsession with food, weight, and body image that can lead to both physical and emotional problems (Mickley, 2001). The rate of eating disorders among girls between the ages of 9-13 is steadily rising (Herzog & Delinsky, 2001). It is estimated that approximately eight million girls and women in America have symptoms of some type of eating disorder, and this is a conservative number because many girls go undiagnosed (Meehan, 1990). Recently Schur, Sanders, and Steiner (2000) showed that 41 % of girls ages 9-10 desired a thinner body shape, which indicates that children are developing …

When And How Should Keyboarding Be Taught In The Elementary School?, Shannon Fleming

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review addresses the topic of when and how keyboarding should be taught in the elementary school. It is apparent that keyboarding needs to be taught in the elementary school, but when and how formal keyboarding instruction should be taught is still in question. The review of the literature indicates that there is no concrete answer as to when keyboarding should be taught in elementary school. Most of the research says that instruction should begin one year prior to student use of the computer. As to how to effectively teach keyboarding, it seems that it is a conglomerate of …

Theatre As A Change Agent: An Analysis Of High School Theatre Education And Its Benefits In Communication And Problem Solving, Cory Losenicky

Graduate Research Papers

Theatre education in the high school has an interesting past. Theatre has a long presence in schools as entertainment, but its benefits to educational outcomes has been largely overlooked. In the United States around the turn of the last century, this schema began to be questioned. In 1936, Columbia University published a book discussing the use of theatre in the United States and its possible uses in education: "The Production of Later 19th Century American Drama" by Garrett Leverton. This book was the first to discuss the beginning of the changing role of theatre in education. Columbia University was not …

Wash, Karin Eberhardt Watts Jan 2002

Wash, Karin Eberhardt Watts

LSU Master's Theses

In this body of work, Wash, I translate the negative aspects of life in a positive, vibrant way. The physical and psychological sensations of life supply me with an intuitive frame of reference providing a point of departure for visual expression. Digital scanning and imaging techniques allow me to develop an immediate intimacy with the organic and inorganic objects, while I methodically examine, alter and reconfigure their forms. Graphic elements suggest symbolic interpretation from eastern studies and are sometimes enhanced with letterforms and photographic images representing the difficult articulation of thoughts. I synchronize this re-orchestration with the deciphering and close …

An additional purpose of this thesis was to determine whether the afore-mentioned tests could differentiate between independent-living and assisted-living older adults. A total of 36 residents, independent-living (n=22) and assisted-living (n=14), of a continuing care retirement community (age range=65-94) completed the study. Perceived QOL was assessed using the SF-36 and Nottingham Health Profile. The Barthel Index and Functional Status Index (FSI) were used to assess Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Physical function was measured using the reduced Continuous …
