The Effects Of Boron On The Range Of Motion Of Dexterity Related Joints: A Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nicole Herda, Jessica Woehl

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive, destructive and chronic, inflammatory disease of the joint synovium. Signs and symptoms include pain, limited range of motion, swelling, and tenderness, which may progress to deformity. These manifestations may limit dexterity, independent living, and the overall well being of an individual. Living with daily restrictions proves to be a psychologically distressing experience.

An increase in the dietary boron level of laboratory rats has shown to have a positive effect on the range of motion in their involved joints. This concept was tested on a human subject at the United States Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition …

Little Engines That Could: Community Clients, Their Lawyers, And Training In The Arts Of Democracy, Susan Bennett Jan 2002

Little Engines That Could: Community Clients, Their Lawyers, And Training In The Arts Of Democracy, Susan Bennett

Presentations

We assume a lot about the virtues of governance "from the bottom up." We trust in it as an antidote: to oppression from the other direction; to the kind of "top-down" planning that we blame for the tragedies of urban renewal; and to the hubris of any "helping professionals" who think they have good ideas about the way in which communities ought to be helped.' In short, we place a great deal of faith in the authenticity of the neighborhood-based organization as an engine of democracy. Less emphatically, we also (sometimes) assume that programs run by neighborhood-based organizations carry with …

Intergenerational Art Education: Building Community In Harlem, Angela M. La Porte Jan 2002

Intergenerational Art Education: Building Community In Harlem, Angela M. La Porte

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I began the first of 43 visits to an after-school intergenerational art program in Lower East Harlem, New York, with the expectation of a straight-forward research project, one which would perhaps ratify my growing conviction that young people and older adults together would provide a natural learning environment for art. My first personal encounter with the Lower East Harlem community began when I crossed 96th Street, an informal boundary separating its decaying tenements and public housing projects from the newer, more prosperous neighborhood to the south. I soon realized that there was no need for a line on the map …

When The Bough Breaks: Loss Of Tradition In The Urban Landscape, Esther Parada Jan 2002

When The Bough Breaks: Loss Of Tradition In The Urban Landscape, Esther Parada

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Considering the theme of this conference – wide-open spaces – has prompted me to think about my life history in terms of landscape/environments: the first eighteen years of my life were spent in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is set in the gently rolling Grand River Valley of western Michigan; the next four years were at Swarthmore College, amidst the narrow winding roads and lush vegetation of suburban Philadelphia. In the mid-60’s I spent two and one-half years at nine-thousand feet in the spectacular Bolivian Andes, as a Peace Corps volunteer art teacher (I’d never seen mountains before the summer we …

Wrestling With Tv “Rasslin”, Paul Duncum Jan 2002

Wrestling With Tv “Rasslin”, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

TV wrestling stretches the envelope of what art educators might consider legitimate content under the emerging art educational paradigm of visual culture. (Duncum & Bracey, 2001) TV wrestling. Or "rasslin" as it’s known to its audience, is a significant cultural site because it is very popular and, under analysis, has much to say about contemporary cultural experience, especially that of its audience. While it provides pleasures and reference points to its audience, these reference points are often sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, and in terms of familial relationships, dysfunctional. They are also violent and obscene. This paper both acknowledges the lived experience …

Comparison Of The Multiple Intelligence Domains, Specific Skills, And Intellectual Styles Of Freshmen And Seniors At A Metropolitan University In The South, Stephen Richard Marvin

Theses and Dissertations

With focus upon Gardner's (1983, 1993) Theory of Multiple Intelligences, the purpose of this study was to develop, through the exploration of empirical data, an understanding of freshman and senior intelligence at a metropolitan university in the South, and determine if a statistically significant difference existed between freshman intelligence and senior intelligence with regard to the students' multiple intelligence domains, specific skills and intellectual styles, and within each subject's respective gender, ethnicity, and age group. Through the use of the Multiple Intelligence Developmental Assessment Scales (MIDAS), this study identified the multiple intelligence domains, specific skills and intellectual styles of a …

The graduation rates were determined and analyzed by ethnicity, gender, and sports teams. Cognitive and noncognitive data were collected from a sample of 57 fall 2001 transfer student athletes. The information collected from the study group was analyzed using multiple regression and logistic regression techniques. There were five major findings of this …

The Soul Of Scholarship: The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And Religious Orientation Of College -Bound High School Seniors, Karmen Petersen Williams Jan 2002

The Soul Of Scholarship: The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And Religious Orientation Of College -Bound High School Seniors, Karmen Petersen Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has suggested a relationship between religiousness and various aspects of physical and mental health; however, an examination of the relationship between religious orientation and academic achievement appears to be an under-explored area of empirical research. The present study investigated the relationship of academic achievement and religious orientation of college-bound high school seniors. The Intrinsic and Extrinsic subscales of Allport's (Allport & Ross, 1967) Religious Orientation Scale and the Quest subscale of Batson's (Batson & Ventis, 1982) Religious Life Inventory were interspersed into a 32-item Likert-style questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered in both large group and small group format …

Compensation For Victims Of Terror: A Specialized Jurisprudence Of Injury, Marshall S. Shapo Jan 2002

Compensation For Victims Of Terror: A Specialized Jurisprudence Of Injury, Marshall S. Shapo

Hofstra Law Review

The legislation and Rules creating the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (the "Fund") constitute a new entry in the "jurisprudence of injury." The Fund presents challenges that cut across traditional tort and compensation law, economic theory, philosophy, psychology and political science. This article combines analysis of the statute and the Rules with suggestions about their political significance, including brief summaries of heated public discussion about the Fund and a couple of personalized anecdotes, selected for their symbolic power.

Trying to "broker the politics of injury," Congress in establishing the Fund created a "unique form of public choice," with "something for …

Sovereignty, Territoriality, And The Rule Of Law, Joan Fitzpatrick Jan 2002

Sovereignty, Territoriality, And The Rule Of Law, Joan Fitzpatrick

UC Law SF International Law Review

On November 13, 2001, President George W. Bush issued a Military Order in which he claimed power as Commander in Chief to detain indefinitely and to try, by ad hoc military commissions, persons designated by him as international terrorists. This Order represents a stunning claim to absolutist power and a rejection of any meaningful legal constraints on the treatment of the captives. The Order and the "War on Terrorism" on which it is premised challenge the most commonly accepted principles of post-Westphalian sovereignty: exclusive control over territory, noninterference, and equality among states.

The legal premise for the Order is the …

The Role Of Comparative Law In Statutory And Constitutional Interpretation, Jens C. Dammann Jan 2002

The Role Of Comparative Law In Statutory And Constitutional Interpretation, Jens C. Dammann

St. Thomas Law Review

This article argues that comparative law can legitimately be used as a standard tool in the context of legal interpretation. Part I establishes a terminological framework for the analysis undertaken in this article. Part II examines existing attempts at justifying the use of comparative arguments in legal interpretation. It is shown that the approaches in question can only legitimize the use of comparative law in specific circumstances but fail to provide a general basis for the use of comparative reasoning. Part HI identifies possible objections to the legitimacy of comparative justification. To do so, it analyzes both the relevant literature …

The Need For The Expansion Of Military Reservists' Rights In Furtherance Of The Total Force Policy: A Comparison Of The Userra And Ada, Andy P. Fernandez Jan 2002

The Need For The Expansion Of Military Reservists' Rights In Furtherance Of The Total Force Policy: A Comparison Of The Userra And Ada, Andy P. Fernandez

St. Thomas Law Review

The call to arms has sounded! The militia awaits and the citizen-soldier must stop all his daily activities and chores. His industrial pursuits, projects, and presentations are only half done. There are bills that are unpaid; insurance, credit cards, car payments, house payments, and loan payments. What income will my family have to sustain them through the deployment? There are still so many chores left undone, the citizen-soldier thinks as he reaches for his equipment. Who will take care of my home? Will my family be fine? Can they manage? I hope so. There will be so much more to …

The Playing Ground Of Childhood: Boyhood Battles In Américo Paredes', George Washington Gómez, Keller Delores Ayers Jan 2002

The Playing Ground Of Childhood: Boyhood Battles In Américo Paredes', George Washington Gómez, Keller Delores Ayers

Ethnic Studies Review

Although playing is generally viewed as a childhood universal--an expected and somewhat innocuous part of children's lives--Chicano writers often particularize play's universality by constructing the diverse grounds of childhood play as sites that encapsulate conflicting subject positions. Among the Chicano texts in which playing shares this complexity as a critical locus for the child protagonist is Américo Paredes' George Washington Gómez. Paredes employs narratives of childhood play in a dialectical pattern that elucidates his protagonist's inner and outer conflicts and that also evokes Ramón Saldívar's theory of Chicano literature. While Guálinto Gomez's playworlds reflect both the violence and discrimination that …

Remembering Poland: The Ethics Of Cultural Histories, William Gorski Jan 2002

Remembering Poland: The Ethics Of Cultural Histories, William Gorski

Ethnic Studies Review

Art Spiegelman's Maus, Cynthia Ozick's The Shawl, and Eva Hoffman's Lost in Translation and Exit into History are recent American texts that draw upon cultural histories of Poland to launch their narratives. Each text confronts and reconstructs fragments of twentieth-century Poland at the interactive sites of collective culture and personal memory. By focusing on the contested relationship between Poles and Jews before, during, and after World War II, these texts dredge up the ghosts of centuries-long ethnic animosities. In the post-Cold War era, wherein Eastern Europe struggles to redefine itself, such texts have a formative influence in re-mapping the future …

The Psychology Of Competence And Informed Consent: Understanding Decision-Making With Regard To Clinical Research, Barry Rosenfeld Jan 2002

The Psychology Of Competence And Informed Consent: Understanding Decision-Making With Regard To Clinical Research, Barry Rosenfeld

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article examines the importance of patient autonomy and competence in medical decision making and how questions of competence affect informed consent. The author explores three hypothetical cases which "outline the parameters of 'competence' by illustrating the methodologies used in making [determinations of competence], distinguishing between ethical and legal issues in the assessment of competence, and reviewing the procedures for surrogate decision making when competence is deemed impaired." The cases present questions on when to respect patient autonomy and when it may be appropriate to allow a surrogate to take over decision making.

Coerced Confessions And The Fourth Amendment, Michael J. Zydney Mannheimer Jan 2002

Coerced Confessions And The Fourth Amendment, Michael J. Zydney Mannheimer

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Coerced confessions in State criminal prosecutions have been thought to implicate the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, as well as the Self-Incrimination Clause of the Fifth Amendment. However, pursuant to Graham v. Connor, if an interest is addressed by one of the specific clauses of the Bill of Rights that has been incorporated against the States, only the standards associated with that provision- and not the more generalized notions of Due Process- apply to a claim that the interest has been infringed. Accordingly, one might think that the law of coerced confessions is governed entirely by the Self- …

A Technique For Visualizing Software Architectures, Jon M. Inouye Jan 2002

A Technique For Visualizing Software Architectures, Jon M. Inouye

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Software architecture appeared in the early 1990s as a distinct discipline within software engineering. Models based on software architecture attempt to reduce the complexity of software by providing relatively coarse-grained structures for representing different aspects of software development. A software architecture typically consists of various components and connections arranged in a specific topology. Elements of the topology can serve as abstractions on (for example) modules, objects, protocols or interfaces. The meaning of the topology depends on viewpoint.

Software architectures' can be described using an architecture description language (ADL). The key goals of ADLs are to communicate alternate designs to the …

Working Memory In Schizophrenics And Older Adults : A Mediator For Episodic Memory Deficits?, Matthew W. Webster

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of working memory on episodic memory in older adults and adults with schizophrenia. This study included 15 adults with schizophrenia, 20 young adults without psychopathology, and 21 older adults without psychopathology. Storage working memory scores were greater than processing working memory scores in all groups. Young adults had the fewest problems with episodic and working memory, compared to older adults and adults with schizophrenia, who had similar deficits in both memory types. Speed of processing was found to be the greatest predictor of working memory capacity.
