Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study contends that Reunionese and Caribbean identities can be construed in part through an examination of orality and language in the literature of the islands. In preparation for an analysis of the dynamics of Creole and other oral features in Huet`s Zaza, la Réunion des années 50 and Brodber’s Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home, some linguistic preliminaries establish Creoles as full-fledged languages, a step that helps explain the post-colonial subject’s behavior towards a language initially imposed by the colonizer. A comparison of the nature, mechanics, and purposes of oral structural devices in the two literary works leads …

An Analysis Of An Interview Between A Carthusian Monk And A Benedictine Monk Utilizing Fillmore's Frame Model In Discourse Analysis., Joseph John Pielech

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis analyzed a three-hour audiotape interview (Appendices I and II) between Fr. Benedict Neenan, a professed Benedictine monk and Pr. Raphael Diamond, a Carthusian monk from the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration in Arlington, VT. The theoretical framework employed as the vehicle of analysis is Fillmoreís Frame Model (1976, 1977). By implementing Fillmoreís model, we are able to explain how and why certain frames arose as well as account for any breakdown in the discourse which resulted from inaccurate or incomplete mental representations the participants had. Fillmoreís model incorporates the linguistic, metalinguistic, and psycho-social elements of language, however he does …

Religiosity and spirituality were found to overlap in areas of prayer fulfillment and universality. In addition, the top ten reasons for living in this population were identified. The implications of the results for suicide assessment and prevention in older adults, and future …

The Big Three As Related To Receiver Apprehension And Listening Behaviors., Jamie Lynn Hayhurst Jan 2002

The Big Three As Related To Receiver Apprehension And Listening Behaviors., Jamie Lynn Hayhurst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study examined receiver and listening behaviors from a communibiological point of view. Communibiology proposes that particular communication variables are predictable by individual inborn processes. These inborn processes make up our individual temperament. Therefore, the apprehension variables were measured to determine if they were predicted by temperament. Individual temperament was measured using Eysenck’s Big Three measurement of extroversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. The dependent variables were then regressed to determine if they were predictable by all three temperament variables and/or by one of individual variables. College undergraduates (N = 325) voluntarily participated in the study. Results indicate mixed support for …

Results indicated that self-perceived body image was negatively related with the inclusion and relaxation motives, but was not significantly correlated with the pleasure, affection, escape, and control motives. It was also found that women have a significantly lower self-perceived body image than men. Limitations and directions for future research were also …

Wheat, Wealth, And Western Maryland: The Growth And Evolution Of Flour Milling In Frederick County, Maryland, 1748-1789., John F. Kvach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores the evolution of flourmills in Frederick County, Maryland within the context of the economic and social development of western Maryland from 1748-1789. Western Maryland’s development differed greatly from that of most other areas in Maryland. A large German immigrant population, along with English and Scottish settlers, settled the valleys, of present day Frederick County, during the eighteenth century. These settlers grew wheat and created a need for mills and millers. Economically, mills created prosperity by attracting new businesses and settlers to the frontier. Politically and socially, millers influenced a region often in conflict with the tobacco interests …

The Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns And Locus Of Control., Andrea Marie Nardello

College undergraduates (N=215) were given a survey which measured their locus of control and family communication patterns. Results of a Pearson Correlation show conversation-orientation to be positively related to internal, structural, other-owned, and negatively related to normative and phenomenal locus of control. Conformity-orientation was …

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade Jan 2002

Differential Reinforcement Of Fixed-Interval Interresponse Times: Effects On Choice., Tammy Renee Wade

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eight rats were exposed to a concurrent-chains procedure. Half of the rats chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required low rates of responding in the paced terminal link and a simple fixed-interval schedule in the unpaced terminal link. The other half chose between a fixed-interval schedule that required high rates of responding and a simple fixed-interval schedule. Interresponse-time criteria were based on the percentiles of a baseline distribution of interresponse times obtained for each rat. The criteria increased in stringency across conditions. Consistent changes in response rates as the result of the interresponse-time criteria were not obtained. Therefore, preference between …

Recreation Specialization And The Recreation Opportunity Spectrum: A Study Of Climbers., George Mcclellen, Iii Weekley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to match the appropriate setting opportunities with the level of recreation specialization of selected climbers, using the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) as a model of different setting opportunities. Questionnaires were distributed and analyzed to create a specialization index level. Associations with setting variables were analyzed using Kendall’s tau-b correlation and model selection loglinear analysis. Of the relationships examined, four variables were significant using Kendall’s tau-b and two using model selection (α= .05). These results show that the setting becomes more important as specialization increases and that more specialized climbers tend to go to more …
