Highly Significant Findings In Psychology: A Power And Effect Size Survey, Rose Marie Ward Jan 2002

Highly Significant Findings In Psychology: A Power And Effect Size Survey, Rose Marie Ward

Open Access Dissertations

The quality of current psychological research has been questioned because of perceived flaws in the primary methods of inquiry. As early as the late 1930s researchers began criticizing the methods by which psychological research examines hypotheses. Over the last 50 years, researchers have suggested that the American Psychological Association require additional indices to augment findings of statistical significance. Among the indices suggested are statistical power and measures of magnitude of effect size. While researchers and the APA have suggested utilizing these and other methods to supplement NHST, it seems that researchers are not currently using statistical power and effect size …

Cultural Diversity And The Police In The United States: Understanding Problems And Finding Solutions, Benjamin J. Goold, Karyn Hadfield Jan 2002

Cultural Diversity And The Police In The United States: Understanding Problems And Finding Solutions, Benjamin J. Goold, Karyn Hadfield

All Faculty Publications

For over 150 years, there has been a history of tension and conflict between the police and minority communities in the United States. In principle, the police exist to enforce the law and protect all citizens regardless of race or ethnic background, yet police departments across the country have been repeatedly accused of targeting and harassing racial minorities, and of failing to root out racist attitudes and practices within their ranks. Recent, high profile cases of beatings by police have only served to heighten concerns over the mistreatment of minorities by the police, resulting in widespread calls for major legal …

Deciding When Hate Is A Crime: The First Amendment, Police Detectives, And The Identification Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This Article adds to the debate a story of how hate crime law is enforced, based on the experiences of the police detectives who are required to enforce hate crime law. Part I of this Article provides a brief description of hate crime laws and argues that the police play an important role in the determination of how hate crime law is enforced and ultimately, whether defendants’ First Amendment rights will be respected. Part II describes critics’ concerns about defendants’ First Amendment rights and the narrow constitutional line that enforcers of hate crime law must walk between enforcing hate crime …

Narcissism In First Time Expectant Fathers, Robin Sall Jan 2002

Narcissism In First Time Expectant Fathers, Robin Sall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Thirty-four first time expectant fathers were recruited to assess changes in their narcissistic characteristics over the course of their wife's pregnancy. The Selfism Scale (NS) (Phares & Erskine, 1984) was used to measure the developmental narcissistic response in first-time, expectant fathers. The results showed no significant difference in husband's narcissism across the three trimesters of pregnancy. Future studies should include a control group and a larger and more diverse sample.

Designing Hiv/Aids Intervention Studies: An Operations Research Handbook, Andrew A. Fisher, James R. Foreit, John E. Laing, John E. Stoeckel, John Townsend

HIV and AIDS

This handbook has several objectives and uses. First, it is designed to help HIV/AIDS researchers develop and write a detailed operations research proposal. An appropriate use of the handbook is as a resource in workshops or courses on research design and proposal development. Thus, the organization of the handbook follows that of a research proposal, starting with identifying, defining, and justifying a research problem, and ending with how to prepare a budget. Although the handbook is not an academic textbook on research methods, it does provide a review of many key concepts and important methods essential for conducting HIV/AIDS field …

Greater Involvement Of Plha In Ngo Service Delivery: Findings From A Four-Country Study, Horizons Program Jan 2002

Greater Involvement Of Plha In Ngo Service Delivery: Findings From A Four-Country Study, Horizons Program

HIV and AIDS

At the conclusion of the Paris AIDS Summit in 1994, 42 governments issued a declaration supporting the greater involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in policy formulation and service delivery. Despite growing recognition of its importance, there has been little research that examines PLHA involvement in the delivery of prevention, care, and support services in developing countries and its effects on PLHA, others affected by HIV/AIDS, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). To address this gap, the Horizons Program and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance conducted a study of PLHA involvement in NGOs in Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Maharashtra State, India, and Zambia …

The Logician Versus The Linguist- An Empirical Tale Of Functional Discrimination In The Legal Academy, Andrea Kayne Kaufman Jan 2002

The Logician Versus The Linguist- An Empirical Tale Of Functional Discrimination In The Legal Academy, Andrea Kayne Kaufman

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This paper, focusing exclusively on gender, asks whether male and female law students express different preferences for logic-based learning models. A wide variety of educational theories and other theories have been used to conceptualize different learning preferences among law students but until now, none has focused on logical intelligence compared with the other intelligences. Using Harvard educational psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, this paper describes an empirical study establishing that male and female law students express differences in preferring logical intelligence over the other intelligences. This paper introduces the concept of "functional discrimination," addressing the ways in which …

The Customer Is Always Right… Not! Employer Liability For Third Party Sexual Harassment, Lea B. Vaughn Jan 2002

The Customer Is Always Right… Not! Employer Liability For Third Party Sexual Harassment, Lea B. Vaughn

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This article will ask a series of questions. What is third party sexual harassment? Under what conditions does it occur? Does it differ in any significant respects from traditional notions of sexual harassment? Should those differences, if any, make a difference in the way that the legal system addresses third party harassment? And indeed, should the problem be addressed solely through the legal system? What might an employer do to alleviate sexual harassment of this type?

"Just Like One Of The Family": Domestic Violence Paradigms And Combating On-The-Job Violence Against Household Workers In The United States, Kristi L. Graunke Jan 2002

"Just Like One Of The Family": Domestic Violence Paradigms And Combating On-The-Job Violence Against Household Workers In The United States, Kristi L. Graunke

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article argues that the immense problem of on-the-job abuse experienced by domestic workers demands a multifaceted plan of attack. The proposed responses specifically draw upon the capacities, strengths, and resources of women, particularly comparatively privileged women, as both activists and employers of domestic workers. By describing the circumstances of domestic work in the United States from the nation's inception to the present, Part I demonstrates the prevalence and intractability of on-the-job physical and sexual abuse and argues that other women, as employers of domestic workers, have historically played a complex role in participating in, condoning, or failing to acknowledge …

Using Excited Utterances To Prosecute Domestic Violence In New York: The Door Opens Wide, Or Just A Crack?, Brooks Holland Jan 2002

Using Excited Utterances To Prosecute Domestic Violence In New York: The Door Opens Wide, Or Just A Crack?, Brooks Holland

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article discusses the use of excited utterances as a hearsay exception in domestic violence prosecutions, particularly in the case of *People v. Lopez*. It highlights how this precedent allows prosecutors to use such statements without the complainant's testimony, which is crucial in cases where victims often refuse to cooperate. The author cautions against over-reliance on this exception, emphasizing the need to balance the prosecution's interests with the defendant's right to confront their accuser under the Confrontation Clause.

China's Direct Marketing Ban: A Case Study Of China's Response To Capital-Based Social Networks, Michele A. Wong

Washington International Law Journal

China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce issued a circular on April 18, 1998 banning all forms of multi-level direct marketing, citing concerns with social stability and economic order. While the direct marketing ban was ultimately implemented in such a way as to allow those who engaged in network marketing to transition to retail sales, alleviating some of the violence of the protest to the ban, opposition to the ban has continued both domestically and abroad. Direct marketing organizations create tight-knit, extensive networks of individuals with similar economic interests. By assembling around a common economic interest, the group may also …

Turning Competition On Its Head: Economic Analysis Of The Ec's Decision To Bar The Ge-Honeywell Merger, Paul Jin Jan 2002

Turning Competition On Its Head: Economic Analysis Of The Ec's Decision To Bar The Ge-Honeywell Merger, Paul Jin

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

On July 3, 2001, the Commission of the European Communities ("Commission") rejected the proposed $45 billion merger between The General Electric Company ("GE") and Honeywell International, Inc. ("Honeywell"), which U.S. antitrust regulators had approved. Of the some 400 mergers involving U.S. companies reviewed by the Commission since 1990, only one had ever been barred. In that instance, however, U.S. authorities had also blocked the proposed transaction. Thus, the failed GE-Honeywell merger marked the first time the Commission had blocked a merger involving U.S. companies that had been approved by U.S. authorities. The Commission's move to block the GE-Honeywell merger brought …
