Roundtable Series On Innovative Approaches To Land Conservation And Smart Growth, New England Environmental Finance Center

Smart Growth

A series of six roundtable discussions was conducted by the New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) from January through May 2002, one in each New England state. The objectives of the series were to consolidate expertise in financing and coordinating projects that combine conservation and development on the landscape, and to identify key areas of unmet need that could be addressed by the NE/EFC. Each discussion entailed several case study presentations and facilitated discussion about what works, what doesn’t work, and what might work in financing and coordinating efforts that combine conservation and development. Key areas of opportunity that emerged …

‘When One Door Shuts, Another Opens’: Turning Disadvantages Into Opportunities, A.W.M. Veldkamp Jun 2002

‘When One Door Shuts, Another Opens’: Turning Disadvantages Into Opportunities, A.W.M. Veldkamp

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

For many years, the child and family welfare and the child protection systems in the Netherlands have been under heavy criticism. Numerous experts in these fields have been advocating more intensive co-operation and a better coherence between both systems. The relationship between both fields seems to be a never ending issue for political and public discussion that has filled many bookshelves during the last decades. In spite of this, until now, the criticized relationship between the two has not fundamentally changed. In this paper, the characteristic differences between child and family welfare systems and child protection systems will be considered. …

A Protocol For Assessing And Developing Spiritual Formation Among Council For Christian Colleges And Universities Schools In North America, Keith R. Anderson

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a protocol for assessing and developing spiritual formation among schools affiliated with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities in North America.

Problem: A paradigm that is deeply rooted in scripture, practical theology, and an understanding of spiritual formation is needed to assess programs for spiritual formation of traditional college students.

1. What is the need within its context? Articulates why a need exists among schools of Council for Christian Colleges and Universities? I will describe the historical context and provide original research from forty-two CCCV schools.

2: What is the approach …

The Production Of Communication Signals At The Air–Water And Water–Substrate Boundaries, Sean C. Lema, John T. Kelly Jun 2002

The Production Of Communication Signals At The Air–Water And Water–Substrate Boundaries, Sean C. Lema, John T. Kelly

Biological Sciences

The 2 interfaces of the aquatic environment, the boundary between air–water and water–substrate, have distinctive physical characteristics that facilitate the production of communication signals. Recent evidence suggests that animals living on or near these boundaries use the interface to generate signals in 2 ways: (a) by producing a signal that propagates along the interface or (b) by producing a signal at the interface that is transmitted and detected within 1 of the component media. By examining the diversity of behaviors used to produce signals at these boundaries, the authors illustrate how human perception of these environments may cause researchers to …

Child And Family Welfare In Sweden, Gunvor Andersson Jun 2002

Child And Family Welfare In Sweden, Gunvor Andersson

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Sweden has no special Children’s Act because regulations on children are included in the Social Services Act from 1980, supplemented by an act regulating compulsory care. Child and Family welfare has a family support orientation rather than a child protection orientation. No time limit provided by the law put an end to family support or out-of-home care, but interventions are reviewed every six months. The paper presents some facts about Sweden, gives and overview of the legal framework, family maintenance services and out-of-home care. Further details are given about contact person/family as one of the most frequently used statutory support …

The Plight Of Paternalism In French Child Welfare And Protective Policies And Practices, Alain Grevot Jun 2002

The Plight Of Paternalism In French Child Welfare And Protective Policies And Practices, Alain Grevot

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

For 40 years, the French child protection system has been based on a structure set up at the dawn of the Fifth Republic, giving a strong role, and a monopoly to the State to support families in trouble. The role of Children’s Judges has been designed to personify the constitutional duty of the State to control and support the role of parents as defined by the civil code. The evolution of the structure of French society (family models, multicultural communities), the impact of more liberal economic and social policies (in a country strongly characterized by centralization and Jacobinism), the growth …

Learning From Difference: Comparing Child Welfare Systems, Rachael Hetherington Jun 2002

Learning From Difference: Comparing Child Welfare Systems, Rachael Hetherington

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Child welfare and child protection are integral aspects of the welfare regimes of all post-industrial societies. However, although the needs of children and the dangers of child abuse are so widely acknowledged, the ways in which these needs and risks are met varies considerably, even between countries with similar structures. By studying the ways in which other countries deal with similar problems, we can learn about new ways of responding and may find ideas that we can adapt for use in our own context. But we can do much more than this. By looking at differences, and using the power …

Maori Perspectives On Collaboration And Colonisation In Contemporary Aotearoa/New Zealand Child And Family Welfare Policies And Practices, Catherine Love Jun 2002

Maori Perspectives On Collaboration And Colonisation In Contemporary Aotearoa/New Zealand Child And Family Welfare Policies And Practices, Catherine Love

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Colonization involves the appropriation and disfigurement of resources, the most valuable of these being people. In Aotearoa/New Zealand, indigenous Maori experiences of colonization parallel those of indigenous peoples around the world. The British modelled child welfare system in particular has been held responsible for the fragmentation of Maori families/whanau and communities. In 1989, new legislation was heralded as a radical departure from the previous legalistic, coercive and punitive system. The ‘Children, Young Person’s and their Families Act’ (CYP&F, 1989) signalled a partnership approach whereby Western welfare authorities and indigenous Maori communities would collaborate to protect ‘the best interests of the …

Equating Multiple Forms Of A Competency Test: An Item Response Theory Approach, Christine E. Demars Jun 2002

Equating Multiple Forms Of A Competency Test: An Item Response Theory Approach, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

A competency test was developed to assess students' skills in using electronic library resources. Because all students were required to pass the test, and had multiple opportunities to do so, multiple test forms were desired. Standards had been set on the original form, and minor differences in form difficulty needed to be taken into account. Students were randomly administered one of six new test forms; each form contained the original items and 12 pilot items which were different on each form. The pilot items were then calibrated to the metric of the original items and incorporated in two additional operational …

Implementation Of The Sound Partners Reading Program, Nancy E. Marchand-Martella, Ronald C. Martella, J. Ron Nelson, Lynn Waterbury, Sharon A. Shelley, Charalambos Cleanthous, David Hatfield

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Eleven first grade and 10 second grade students, all with reading and behavioral difficulties, received one-on-one tutoring using the Sound Partners reading program (Vadasy & Pool, 1997). Students received 30 min of tutoring each day for 5 months. Students were assessed on Letter-Word Identification, Passage Comprehension, and Word Attack subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson-Revised (WJ-R): Tests of Achievement. An informal measure (rapid letter naming) was also used. Results indicated that gains of approximately 1 standard deviation (or greater) were noted for subtests of the WJ-R for first-grade students; second graders showed relatively stable performance from pre- to posttest assessments. Similar performance …

Creating In Our Own Image: Artificial Intelligence And The Image Of God, Noreen L. Herzfeld Jun 2002

Creating In Our Own Image: Artificial Intelligence And The Image Of God, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Theology Faculty Publications

There is remarkable convergence between twentieth-century interpretations of the image of God (imago Dei), what it means for human beings to be created in God's image, and approaches toward creating in our own image in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Both fields have viewed the intersection between God and humanity or humanity and computers in terms of either (1) a property or set of properties such as intelligence, (2) the functions we engage in or are capable of, or (3) the relationships we establish and maintain. Each of these three approaches reflects a different understanding of what …

Gender Inequities After The Implementation Of Equal Opportunities Legislation : A Study Of Japanese Retail Firms In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong Jun 2002

Gender Inequities After The Implementation Of Equal Opportunities Legislation : A Study Of Japanese Retail Firms In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This study examines equal opportunities for women employees in two four retail companies in Hong Kong; two of the companies Japanese-owned (Tairo and Okadaya). Research conducted in Hong Kong shows that gender inequality persists in the workplace. This paper initially examines various explanations for gender inequality put forward by scholars. Since EO legislation - the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO) - was introduced in Hong Kong in 1996, little research has done to explain why gender inequality persists after SDO has been implemented. It can be understood though by examining the gendering processes experienced by individual employees. Concealed gendering processes (re)producing …

Collective Myopia As The Blocking Mechanism To Organizational Learning, Mei Ling, May Wong Jun 2002

Collective Myopia As The Blocking Mechanism To Organizational Learning, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This study aims to identify the blocking n1echanisms for Japanese expatriate managers to acquire double-loop organizational learning in their international assignments. Two Japanese multinational department stores - Morioka and Chubuya - were studied in Japan to illustrate how the Japanese expatriate managers were trapped by the collective myopia. The major blocking mechanisms identified are common Japanese practices which include parent company community spirit, dozoku inhabitants, parent company's translators, and desire for normality. The modes or frames of mind and thinking of these Japanese practices prevent the Japanese expatriates from moving up the organizational learning to achieve the corporate objective of …

Generation Xers And Boomers: How Evolving Work Values, Life Stages, And Generations Explain The Differences, Lucille A. Stoffels Jun 2002

Generation Xers And Boomers: How Evolving Work Values, Life Stages, And Generations Explain The Differences, Lucille A. Stoffels

Theses and Graduate Projects

Eighty-eight percent of today's workforce was born between 1943 and 1981 that make up the two generational groups called Boomers and Generation Xers (Farren & Mauer, 1999).

Over the past several years it has become increasing evident that there is a conflict in the workplace between these two groups. Some of the work related issues between the groups may or may not be limited to their generational group, but may also be reflective of their developmental life stage and the evolving work values.

Coincidentally, Generation Xers are in the life stage of youth and most Boomers are in the middle-aged …
