Views Of Kingship: Britannicus And Louis Xiv’S Mémoires, Russell J. Ganim Jun 2002

Views Of Kingship: Britannicus And Louis Xiv’S Mémoires, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

This study situates itself within a current trend in Racinian scholarship to accentuate the political dimensions of Racine’s dramaturgy. Recently, Timothy Reiss, Suzanne Gearhart, and Alain Viala, among others, have emphasized the socio-political aspects of Racine’s oeuvre in part to counteract the mid twentieth-century notion that Racine’s classicism, if not his work in general, is based almost exclusively on the psychological representation of plot and character. I will argue that to a significant extent, the nature – «classical» or other – of Racine’s drama is also founded on a keen sense of the historic as it relates to the contemporary.

Through The Talking Glass: Translucence And Translation In The Condé Museum’S Psyche Gallery, Russell J. Ganim Jun 2002

Through The Talking Glass: Translucence And Translation In The Condé Museum’S Psyche Gallery, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

The forty-four stained-glass windows (dating from 1540–44) that recount the mythological tale of Psyche in Chantilly’s Condé Museum present a unique semeiological challenge to scholars. Accompanied by lyric inscriptions of either four or eight lines, the panels reveal an image/text combination that represents a literal example of the Renaissance notion of ut pictura poesis. These seldom-discussed panels merit inquiry because they reflect certain historic, artistic, and literary trends that illustrate factional and intellectual movements crucial to understanding France of the early to mid-sixteenth century. In its examination of these issues, this essay asks three questions:
1) What is the political …

Would Smokers With Schizophrenia Benefit From A More Flexible Approach To Smoking Treatment?, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Susy B. Gulliver, Brian Hitsman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

We evaluated literature that addresses the notion that flexible smoking treatment approaches are warranted for smokers with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Understanding the biological and psychological mechanisms that increase the likelihood of smoking and decrease the motivation to quit for these individuals is addressed within the framework of a neurobiological model. We provide a brief overview of the limited smoking cessation treatment literature for patients with schizophrenia and compare abstinence-focused versus reduction-focused treatment modalities. The potential utility of the reduction-focused approach to tobacco treatment for these smokers is evaluated. Suggestions for future research to address the utility and efficacy of …

Some Ethical Issues Surrounding Mediation, Robert P. Burns Jun 2002

Some Ethical Issues Surrounding Mediation, Robert P. Burns

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

A progressively larger portion of social ordering occurs through mediation. Lawyers are often involved in mediation. From one perspective, mediation is simply facilitated negotiation. Thus the issues that pervade the ethics of negotiation reappear in the context of mediation without much change. Mediation, however, promises much more than facilitated negotiation. "Transformative mediation", now widely practiced, aims not primarily at maximizing outcomes, but at the moral transformation of the parties. This form of mediation poses much more fundamental questions about legal ethics and the lawyer's role. These questions implicate the general morality of legal and political discourse and the interrelationships of …

Assessing The Social Context In Initial Conjoint Behavioral Consultation Interviews: An Exploratory Analysis Investigating Processes And Outcomes, Susan M. Sheridan, Sean P. Meegan, John W. Eagle Jun 2002

Assessing The Social Context In Initial Conjoint Behavioral Consultation Interviews: An Exploratory Analysis Investigating Processes And Outcomes, Susan M. Sheridan, Sean P. Meegan, John W. Eagle

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

In this exploratory study, the communicative process in conjoint behavioral consultation was investigated with a coding system designed to measure two dimensions of communication (i.e., influence and involvement). The nature of discrete speech acts that typify consultants’ and consultees’ behaviors in CBC (i.e., collaborative, controlling, obliging, withdrawing) and the communicative function of speech exchanges within CBC (i.e., affiliation, distancing, mixed) were investigated. An initial exploration of the relationship between speech exchanges and direct and indirect outcomes in CBC was conducted. Results indicated that CBC meetings were characterized by a high degree of affiliation among participants; however, few significant relationships were …

Factors Influencing Children To Self-Disclose Sexual Abuse, Mary L. Paine, David J. Hansen Jun 2002

Factors Influencing Children To Self-Disclose Sexual Abuse, Mary L. Paine, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Self-disclosure by victims of child sexual abuse (CSA) is critical to initiate legal and therapeutic intervention. Unfortunately, research indicates that lengthy delays in disclosure and even nondisclosure are common. A comprehensive review of the clinical and research literature on CSA and an overview of related bodies of literature was conducted. Areas addressed include the context of sexual abuse as it relates to disclosure, the context and elements of children’s disclosures, motivational factors inhibiting disclosure, and models of the disclosure process. Ancillary and analogue research on secrecy and disclosure are also reviewed. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
