Subjective Well-Being Across Cultures, Eunkook M. Suh, Shigehiro Oishi Aug 2002

Subjective Well-Being Across Cultures, Eunkook M. Suh, Shigehiro Oishi

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

All individuals strive to be happy. How they pursue this ultimate human goal, however, seems to vary in interesting ways across cultures. Three key findings have emerged from recent scientific research: 1) individualist cultures are happier than collectivists, 2) psychological attributes characterizing the self (e.g., self-esteem, self-consistency) are more relevant to the happiness of Western individualists than to the happiness of collectivists, and 3) the self-judgment of happiness is anchored on different types of cues and experiences across cultures.

Somatization Vs. Psychologization Of Emotional Distress: A Paradigmatic Example For Cultural Psychopathology, Andrew G. Ryder, Jian Yang, Steven J. Heine

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This paper describes the developing area of cultural psychopathology, an interdisciplinary field of study focusing on the ways in which cultural factors contribute to the experience and expression of psychological distress. We begin by outlining two approaches, often competing, in order to provide a background to some of the issues that complicate the field. The main section of the paper is devoted to a discussion of depression in Chinese culture as an example of the types of questions that can be studied. Here, we start with a review of the epidemiological literature, suggesting low rates of depression in China, …

The Making Of A Culturally Competent Counselor, Paul B. Pedersen Aug 2002

The Making Of A Culturally Competent Counselor, Paul B. Pedersen

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Culturally competent counselors are accurately aware of culturally learned assumptions by themselves and their clients, comprehend the culturally relevant facts and information about a client' culture and are able to intervene skillfully to bring about positive change through counseling. A three-stage developmental framework proceeds from awareness to knowledge to skill in defining necessary competencies through a needs assessment. Examples of cultural bias are discussed and resistance to multicultural competence by counselors is described. Examples of facts and information needed to comprehend each cultural context meaningfully are identified and the possibility of multiculturalism as a "fourth force" in counseling is examined. …

Problem Solving And Personality Factors Of Two At -Risk *College Populations, Cory John Clark

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation describes and compares three university populations: (a) students at-risk of alcohol related problems, (b) students academically-at-risk, and (c) non-at-risk students. These populations were given two self-report measures, the Problem Solving Inventory (Heppner, 1988) and the 16PF (Cattell, et al., 1993), to gather information on their problem solving abilities and their personality factors. The intent of the study is to find out what aspects of problem solving and personality differentiates these populations. This information will then be utilized to design and refine interventions for working with these struggling populations. One hundred and thirty-five students from a mid-eastern land-grant university …

The present investigation was designed to examine the development of disturbed eating patterns among college women. More specifically, this researcher investigated the social contagion of eating attitudes and behaviors among first year college women living in residence hall communities. The results demonstrated that college women developed eating attitudes and behaviors similar to those of other women in their small friendship clusters. Similarities in eating attitudes and behaviors were not found among participants in the study when residence hall floor membership was used as the independent variable. This study also found significant relationships between student adjustment to college and disturbed eating …

Monitoring Process And Assessing Uncertainty For Anfis Time Series Forecasting, Yan K. Cathey Deng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although intelligent tools such as neural network, fuzzy logic and neuro-fuzzy methods have been applied in time series forecasting for some time, problems of monitoring forecasting processes and assessing uncertainty for the forecasts represent a major challenge that need to be fully investigated. In this research, we use statistical methods to analyze nonstationary time series forecasting where forecasts are accrued from a neuro-fuzzy ANFIS model. The main focus is to monitor the process and assess the uncertainty of the forecasts.;Single-step-ahead forecasts and multiple-step-ahead forecasts have been investigated by using three nonstationary time series data sets. It is shown that the …

Many people rely on mental shortcuts, or heuristics, to make complex decisions, but this sometimes leads to inaccurate inferences, or cognitive illusions. A recent study suggests such cognitive illusions influence judicial decision making.

Buy, Don't Borrow: Bibliographers' Analysis Of Academic Library Collection Development Through Interlibrary Loan Requests, Kristine J. Anderson, Robert S. Freeman, Jean-Pierre V. M. Hérubel, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk, Judith M. Nixon, Suzanne M. Ward Aug 2002

Buy, Don't Borrow: Bibliographers' Analysis Of Academic Library Collection Development Through Interlibrary Loan Requests, Kristine J. Anderson, Robert S. Freeman, Jean-Pierre V. M. Hérubel, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk, Judith M. Nixon, Suzanne M. Ward

Libraries Research Publications

In 2000, the Purdue University Libraries implemented a Books On Demand program. Instead of borrowing books requested through Interlibrary Loan, staff purchased selected titles and added them to the collection after patron use. After two years, five subject bibliographers analyzed 800 titles acquired through the program in their subject areas and compared them with titles acquired during the same time period through normal selection. The bibliographers concluded that the patron-driven Books On Demand program is a valuable complementary collection development tool. It consistently adds a very high percentage of relevant scholarly titles to the collection which provides input from patrons …

Temporal Trends In Party Affect, Justin Paul Wedeking Aug 2002

Temporal Trends In Party Affect, Justin Paul Wedeking

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been an enormous amount of research on declining partisanship (or dealignment) in the American electorate. The leading view of declining partisanship, promoted by Wattenberg among others, is that the public has become more neutral toward the political parties. According to Wattenberg, this neutrality is a consequence of declining regionalism in party identification and the rise of candidate-centered elections.

An alternative perspective is that negativity underlies the temporal decline in partisanship. In this paper, I will draw upon various strands of the literature to develop a negativity theory of declining partisanship. Using National Election Studies data, I conduct a …

Prevailing Winds: Radical Activism And The American Indian Movement., David Kent Calfee Aug 2002

Prevailing Winds: Radical Activism And The American Indian Movement., David Kent Calfee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1968 a number of Chippewa Indians met in Minneapolis, Minnesota to discuss some of the problems they faced in their communities. This meeting gave birth to the American Indian Movement. From 1968 to 1974, the American Indian Movement embarked on a series of radical protests designed to draw attention to the concerns of American Indians and force the Federal government into acting on their behalf. Unfortunately, these protests brought about a backlash from Federal law enforcement agencies that destroyed the American Indian Movement's national power structure.

Patient Satisfaction And Effectiveness Of A New Resin Used To Bumper Orthodontic Brackets, Timothy B. Elison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fear of pain is a key factor in discouraging patients from seeking orthodontic treatment, with many patients discontinuing treatment due to pain experienced in the early stages of treatment. Patients often complain of traumatized lips and buccal mucosa, which is usually caused by the brackets. Orthodontists try to minimize this pain and discomfort by using bumpering materials. Although wax is the most commonly used product, there are many bracket bumpering materials available.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and patient comfort/satisfaction of a new flowable resin, Ortho Shield, designed to protect the lips and …

Adolescent Drinking And Driving: A Descriptive And Intervention Study, Emalee M. Fields Aug 2002

Adolescent Drinking And Driving: A Descriptive And Intervention Study, Emalee M. Fields

Masters Theses

Given the high rates of alcohol use and abuse among adolescents in our society, it is not surprising that drinking and driving is also relatively common. This paper starts with a summary of national statistics, which is followed by a critical review of previous interventions. The purpose of this project was to attempt to find an effective drinking and driving intervention for high school students which was relatively inexpensive, less time intensive than past interventions and required little or no training for the facilitator to present. Two related intervention conditions (a video only intervention and a slightly more extensive package …

Interference Between Verbal Concept Formation And Spatial Mental Rotation In Female Subjects, Tamas Makany, Kázmér Karadi, János Kallai, Lynn Nadel

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study the relation between spatial cognition and verbal intelligence abilities was examined in case of 52 women. Interference between mental rotation performance and verbal intelligence scores was found. Women with good verbal abilities have lower scores in mental rotation tasks than subjects with poorer verbal abilities. This finding is in accordance with some basic models of a dual-coding system. The spatial functions represented in mental rotation interfered with verbal-based concept formation and lexical knowledge in college women.

The Sought-After Trigger: Essays From Inside The Hunt, Jeffrey Kurrus Aug 2002

The Sought-After Trigger: Essays From Inside The Hunt, Jeffrey Kurrus

Student Work

Contemporary American hunting and fishing literature draws upon a tradition which, like the acts of hunting and fishing themselves, is complex and often contradictory. From the transcendentalist approach of Henry Thoreau to the adventure narrative of Dan O’Brien to the financial focus of Norman Maclean, hunting and fishing literature has evolved to encompass a rich diversity of personal, social, and literary concerns. As a writer of this literature myself, however, I have been repeatedly drawn back to several key critical issues in my own work and the work of others. Primary among these are the ways narrators and other characters …

The Relationship Of Corpus Callosum And Cingulate Gyrus Surface Areas With Intelligence Scores In Persons With Early Hydrocephalus, Heather Gerschler Aug 2002

The Relationship Of Corpus Callosum And Cingulate Gyrus Surface Areas With Intelligence Scores In Persons With Early Hydrocephalus, Heather Gerschler

Theses and Dissertations

This study served as a pilot study of cingulate gyrus surface areas and their relation to intelligence in individuals with hydrocephalus. Surface areas of the corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus regions were compared between individuals with early hydrocephalus (n = 9) and controls (n = 7). Subsequently, the surface areas were correlated with full-scale intelligence scores and the verbal and nonverbal discrepancy scores. Corpus collosum surface areas were significantly smaller in participants with hydrocephalus. These areas also robustly correlated with full-scale intelligence scores. Although the cingulate gyrus did not differ significantly between the groups, the cingulate gyrus regions were increasingly …

On Uncertainty, Ambiguity, And Complexity In Project Management, Michael T. Pich, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer Aug 2002

On Uncertainty, Ambiguity, And Complexity In Project Management, Michael T. Pich, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article develops a model of a project as a payoff function that depends on the state of the world and the choice of a sequence of actions. A causal mapping, which may be incompletely known by the project team, represents the impact of possible actions on the states of the world. An underlying probability space represents available information about the state of the world. Interactions among actions and states of the world determine the complexity of the payoff function. Activities are endogenous, in that they are the result of a policy that maximizes the expected project payoff.

A key …

Community, Fortitude, Satisfaction, And Loyalty: Tests Of Oliver's Proposed Frameworks, J. Martin Fraering Aug 2002

Community, Fortitude, Satisfaction, And Loyalty: Tests Of Oliver's Proposed Frameworks, J. Martin Fraering

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This paper discusses tests of two competing loyalty frameworks proposed by Richard L. Oliver. The cognition to action (CTA) loyalty model specifies four phases: cognitive loyalty, affective loyalty, conative loyalty, and action loyalty, a framework originally discussed by Oliver. The fortitude-community (F-C) loyalty model argues that loyalty is a function of the degree of personal fortitude and the extent to which customers feel that they are members of a community of consumers. In both of these models loyalty is posited to arise from customer satisfaction. Research hypotheses are formulated that assert positive relationships between satisfaction and various loyalty constructs. The …
