Does The Missouri Safe Schools Act Past The Test - Expelling Disruptive Students To Keep Missouri's Schools Safe, Cathi M. Kraetzer Jan 2002

Does The Missouri Safe Schools Act Past The Test - Expelling Disruptive Students To Keep Missouri's Schools Safe, Cathi M. Kraetzer

Missouri Law Review

The Missouri Court of Appeals for Easter District of Missouri interpreted the Missouri Safe Schools Act of 1996 in Hamrick ex rel. Hamrick v. Affton School District Board of Education to require a public school to admit for enrollment a student who had been expelled from a non-public school. Shortly after the court’s decision, the Missouri General Assembly amended the dispositive language of Section 167.171.4. It is not clear that public school districts in Missouri can deny enrollment to students suspended or expelled from both public and non-public schools. This Law Summary discusses whether the statutory change furthers the goas …

Supernovae Neutrinos As A Probe For Neutrino Mass And Supernovae Explosion Mechanism, Robert Jason Gross Jan 2002

Supernovae Neutrinos As A Probe For Neutrino Mass And Supernovae Explosion Mechanism, Robert Jason Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In recent years there have been several neutrino detectors built to detect solar, atmospheric, and cosmic neutrinos. In this dissertation, we used a Monte Carlo approach to model both the SuperKamiokande (SuperK) detector in Japan, and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) in Canada. A neutrino flux produced by a supernova code was implemented to simulate a realistic signal. An analysis of the minimum neutrino mass which could be detected was then performed for SuperK which produced discrepancies for the zero tau mass case when compared to previous work using a smooth emission spectrum as the incident neutrino source. As a …

Step Toward Violence Prevention: "Non-Violent Communication" As Part Of A College Curriculum, Susan M. Blake Jan 2002

Step Toward Violence Prevention: "Non-Violent Communication" As Part Of A College Curriculum, Susan M. Blake

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Structural hierarchies are deeply embedded in institutions such as our educational system. It can be argued that this type of model reinforces an aggressive worldview and fosters an atmosphere of violence. Teaching students to communicate compassionately should promote empathy, discourage verbal aggression and reinforce a more peaceful worldview. To accomplish this, educators need a means of replacing hegemony that assumes hierarchy and aggressive conflict are inevitable. Marshall Rosenberg's (2001) Nonviolent Communication (NVC) may provide educators with an appropriate tool. Rosenberg's model counters the prevailing hegemony making it an ideal candidate to explore in relation to these issues. This paper examines …

Structural, Magnetic, And Electrical Properties Of Ruthenium Oxides, Juscelino Batista Leao Jan 2002

Structural, Magnetic, And Electrical Properties Of Ruthenium Oxides, Juscelino Batista Leao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Early reports of antiferromagnetism in CaRuO3 will be discussed within the framework of our recent experiments. We have observed that slight Ru deficiency (∼4%) leads to a weak feature in the magnetic susceptibility. Temperature-dependant time-of-flight (TOF) neutron powder diffraction data revealed no long-range magnetic order in the Ruthenium deficient CaRu 0.96O3 sample. More careful analysis of magnetization data indicates that the feature in chi(T) can be attributed to a weak ferromagnetic phase which forms below an ordering temperature of T = 147 K. This phase is destroyed with Lanthanum doping (∼2%) and annealing in reducing conditions dramatically shifts this feature. …

Statistical Physics For Materials Classification, Hugues Jean Lassalle Jan 2002

Statistical Physics For Materials Classification, Hugues Jean Lassalle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Genetic algorithms (GA) and clustering techniques are used to study and classify materials. An analysis of the convergence speed of GA is carried out using advanced probability theory and random walk concepts. The determination of the ground-state of multicomponent alloys and Ising models with long-range interactions is accomplished using a genetic algorithm. A new GA operator, the domain-flip, is introduced and its efficiency is compared to that of traditional GA operators, crossover and mutation. The domain-flip operator destroys phase-boundaries by flipping all bits of a given domain at the same time. This operator turns out to be crucial in extracting …

Structural, Electrical And Magnetic Properties Of Transition Metal Nickel Oxides, Guoqing Wu Jan 2002

Structural, Electrical And Magnetic Properties Of Transition Metal Nickel Oxides, Guoqing Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Neutron powder diffraction, high pressure, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements, as well as x-ray powder diffraction and iodometric titration, have been conducted on transition metal nickel oxides (TMOs), representative Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases Lan+1NinO3n+1 (n = 1, 2, ..., infinity) and hole-doped La2-xSr xNiO4 (0 < x < 1.2). The first complete study of La 2-xSrxNiO4 (0 < x < 1.2) and La n+1NinO3n+1 (n = 2 and 3) phases under high pressure is produced. Strong direct experimental evidence for polaron dominated electrical conduction in these charge transfer (CT) gap La2-xSr xNiO4 compounds is provided. Temperature evolution of the crystal structure of La2-xSrxNiO4 (x = 1/4 and 1/3) is revealed through neutron powder diffraction, structural relationships among n = 1, 2, and 3 phases are exhibited, and charge density wave (CDW) in multilayer Lan+1NinO3n+1 phases is strongly suggested. No superconductivity is observed at pressures up to 1.6 GPa and temperatures down to 4.2 K.

Unearthing The Witch: Diversion And Device In Shakespeare's "The Tempest" And Middleton's "The Witch", Anna Capri Hutcheson Jan 2002

Unearthing The Witch: Diversion And Device In Shakespeare's "The Tempest" And Middleton's "The Witch", Anna Capri Hutcheson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Renaissance ideology positioned the witch as deviant and dangerous. Using common cultural perceptions, Shakespeare's and Middleton's dramas help both to define and to produce alternative notions of the witch. Analyzing the function of the witch as cultural icon reveals why the cultural community scapegoated certain women, particularly "wise women." These women were often older and unattached, uncanny in their powers of perception and unruly in their refusal to conform to societal norms. Such women challenged the discourse of power employed by patriarchy. The Tempest requires the reader to read through Prospero's propaganda to examine his motive for vilifying Sycorax. In …

Three Impenetrable Particles On A Ring And The Quantum Billiard In A Triangle, Charlotte Joan Dirk Jan 2002

Three Impenetrable Particles On A Ring And The Quantum Billiard In A Triangle, Charlotte Joan Dirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Remarkable similarities are found in the problem of three impenetrable quantum mechanical particles on a ring and the problem of the quantum billiard in a triangle. If the energy contributed by the motion of the center of mass in the ring problem is subtracted from the total energy, the energy eigenvalues of the particles on the ring are proportional to the energy eigenvalues of the wave function in the corresponding triangle. The eigenvalues derived from the ring solution are unique to that triangle and that energy level. A mathematical relationship is derived, which connects the masses of the particles on …

Subsurface Structure Of An Atmospherically Forced Water Column In Littoral Waters, Michael. Chernys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The developing subsurface structure of a shallow sub-tropical water column during the passage of cold low-pressure atmospheric front is characterized through synoptic and in-situ observations during the passage of three separate fronts over South Florida. Subsurface distribution of current, salinity, temperature, density and dissipation rates were examined using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), ship-based instruments, moored instruments and an Ocean Surface Current Radar (OSCR) as the fronts passed through the region. Airfoil shear probes mounted in a package on the nose of the AUV were used to measure the level and distribution of small-scale turbulence in the water column and …

Visions And Voices: A Community Materializes Its Past, Nancy Carol Stein Jan 2002

Visions And Voices: A Community Materializes Its Past, Nancy Carol Stein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The cultural construction of the past and the role it plays in the present have contributed to our understanding of our history and our culture. Expression and definition of cultural identity are important factors in this discussion and can depend on who is in control of the image and what drives their interest. In order to examine these issues, I explore the roles of authority, voice, and empowerment. I look at cultural representation as portrayed by the African American community of Delray Beach Florida through an oral history project and self-representation through exhibits and public performances. I have documented the …

Whiteness Of It All: Patriarchal Dysfunction And Feminist Consciousness In Zora Neale Hurston's "Seraph On The Suwanee", Rita C. Butler Jan 2002

Whiteness Of It All: Patriarchal Dysfunction And Feminist Consciousness In Zora Neale Hurston's "Seraph On The Suwanee", Rita C. Butler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In Seraph on The Suwanee, Zora Neale Hurston continues a tradition of covert resistance on the part of a black culture struggling to survive within a hostile white society. Her last published novel reveals a talent for combining art and politics and in many ways represents a synthesis of her race, class, and gender consciousness which had grown over the years. Instead of her familiar focus on black culture, however, this paper argues that Hurston uses the story of a conflictive white marriage to create an insightful social critique that challenges a patriarchal society characterized by inequalities of race, class, …

The refined lattice constants, interatomic distances and isotropic atomic displacement parameters as a function of temperature for the pure and substituted hydroxyapatite …

Xml-Based Data Exchange Model, Sridhar. Sreenivasan Jan 2002

Xml-Based Data Exchange Model, Sridhar. Sreenivasan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Data are the backbone to any organization. In some organizations there are applications that operate on a distributed platform. These applications might often communicate with applications on a different platform, that structures data in a different format. The manner in which data is transferred between such applications can become complex, because there will be many platform dependent applications that need to process the data transferred. Hence a mechanism for exchange of data in a simple, effective manner for such applications is a basic necessity. In this thesis, such a mechanism to deal with data exchange in a platform independent manner …

Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl F. Miller Jan 2002

Florida Automobile Insurance To 1971, Karl F. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The history of automobile insurance in Florida provides a case study of economic adaptation to the negative consequences of rapid technological change. The emergence of the automobile in early twentieth century Florida brought with it widespread bodily injury and property damage. The insurance industry and the state government interacted for several decades in trying to fashion a way of reducing the economic cost of automobile accidents. Florida resisted a comprehensive application of insurance to the problem until 1971, when it passed the Florida Automobile Reparations Reform Act. Had Florida acted sooner, the economic impact of automobile accidents could have been …

Gaze In The Model-Painter Relationship: Fictions Of Art By Zola, The Goncourts, Poe, And James, Sabrina Emilie Drai Jan 2002

Gaze In The Model-Painter Relationship: Fictions Of Art By Zola, The Goncourts, Poe, And James, Sabrina Emilie Drai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The art novel or roman sur les arts is a major trend of nineteenth-century novels: the Goncourts' Manette Salomon (1867) and Zola's L'oeuvre (1886) in French literature, Poe's "The Oval Portrait" (1850) and James's "The Madonna of the Future" (1875) in American literature, emphasize the figure of the artist painter and attendant aesthetic problem. The texts explore the painter's relationship to his art and to his model, unfolding along dual trajectories of plot and subplot, or creative struggles with the canvas and amorous entanglements with the model and especially her representation in painting. To disarticulate the triangular relationship between artist, …

From One Generation To The Next: A Case Study Of Holocaust Education In Illinois, Jeffrey Alan Ellison Jan 2002

From One Generation To The Next: A Case Study Of Holocaust Education In Illinois, Jeffrey Alan Ellison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Currently a debate is underway concerning the current state of Holocaust education in the United States. Some scholars believe that its overall state is quite healthy, while others believe that it is in deep need of repair. To date, the literature about Holocaust education does not allow the debate to be answered because even the most basic analytic information is lacking: who teaches it, where it is taught, when it is taught, how it is taught, and why it is taught. For purposes of this study a new Holocaust questionnaire was developed and sent to a random sampling of public …

The purpose of this thesis is to study the performance of network with respect to some of those parameters while neglecting other effects. The simulated network takes …

Hand As Creator In Wallace Stevens: Perception, Sensation, And The Phenomenal Self, Jamie Johnson Jan 2002

Hand As Creator In Wallace Stevens: Perception, Sensation, And The Phenomenal Self, Jamie Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Wallace Stevens's poems alluding to hands yield one of his most profound topics of interest: reality (the external, natural world) versus the imagination (the internal mind). The human hand offers a unique perspective of the complex, often problematic worlds in which the artist exists. In terms of the external world, the hands are the most common means of sense experience. For many artists, the hands act as a medium through which expression of art is delivered. During inspiration, an artist therefore takes an experience of the world, filters it through the imagination, and then creates art by combining mind and …

Imagination At Work: Improving Adult Literacy With The "Harry Potter" Novels, Jo Ann Bamdas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Global illiteracy remains rampant partly due to confusing definitions, inadequate data gathering, hidden agendas, and improper tools of stimulation. Adult literacy is a problem despite efforts and resources. Using children's and adolescents' literature can improve literacy but it is not being used enough due to false concepts. The problems and an adult non-reader profile are outlined. Current literature on literacy, children's literature theory, and critical plus public intellectual media in academia and popular culture is reviewed. I borrow Martha Nussbaum's idea of the narrative imagination to explore J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels. I analyze and then provide a program …

Intuitive Conceptions Of Dead Agents' Minds: The Natural Foundations Of Afterlife Beliefs, Jesse Michael Bering Jan 2002

Intuitive Conceptions Of Dead Agents' Minds: The Natural Foundations Of Afterlife Beliefs, Jesse Michael Bering

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Little is known about how the minds of dead agents are represented. In Study 1, adult participants with different types of explicit afterlife beliefs were asked in an implicit interview task whether various psychological state types (psychobiological, perceptual, emotional, desire, and epistemic states), as well as pure biological imperatives (e.g., need to eat), continue after death. The results suggest that, regardless of one's explicit reports about personal consciousness after death, those who believe in some form of life after death (and, to a certain extent, even those who do not) implicitly represent dead agents' minds in the same way: psychobiological …

Interpretation Of Beach And Nearshore Morphodynamics, Based On Detailed Geomorphological Mapping, Lindino Benedet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Shorelines are prefigured by inherited geologic features and spatially-defined process-form relationships that require in depth study. This thesis is based on the interpretation, delineation, and analysis of coastal geomorphological features, as mapped from large-scale (e.g. 1:3600), digital, georeferenced, stereo-paired, color, aerial photography. The morphologic features identified include coral-algae reef tracts, rock reefs, sedimentary features such as bars, troughs, and sandflats, and different types of engineering works. Interrelationships between these morphologic features are analyzed using a remote sensing-GIS/MIS (Geographic and Marine Information Systems) framework, and applying interpretive approaches in the analysis of beach and nearshore morphodynamics. Sediment and wave data is …

Kuhn's Paradigm Or Hintikka's Calculus: Locating The Debate In Critical Theory, Donna L. Hildreth Jan 2002

Kuhn's Paradigm Or Hintikka's Calculus: Locating The Debate In Critical Theory, Donna L. Hildreth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Thomas Kuhn's popular 1962 book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions failed to convince historians and philosophers of science of its validity as a theory. Instead, it became an overnight success in the humanities. New left-wing politics developed in academia rejecting not only science, but also traditional humanities, fueling an ideological shift away from academics to social politics. Besides the charge that Kuhn confuses history and sociology of science with logic and philosophy, inherent ambiguity and contradiction defy an accurate interpretation of the book. Critics of Kuhns' theory include Jaakko Hintikka, who maintains that an important but overlooked issue concerns what …
