Relationship Of Sorghum Kernel Size To Physiochemical, Milling, Pasting, And Cooking Properties, W. J. Lee, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, D. R. Shelton

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Effects of kernel size on grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] quality were studied in an experiment designed to separate effects of kernel size from seedlot. The study utilized three sieve fractions of varying kernel diameter (>3.35, >2.80 and >2.36 mm) from six seedlots. Chemical composition, physical characteristics, milling characteristics, pasting properties, and cooking qualities were determined for each kernel size fraction. Large kernels lost less relative mass during 1 min of decortication, were higher in protein concentration, and lower in ash. Milling yields were higher from large kernels, and flour from large kernels had higher water absorbance, …

Creating Community-Centered Health Information Systems Architectures: Parterning With Regional Health Planning Groups, Patricia Brennan

Historical and Administrative Collection

Creating and sustaining consumer and public health informatics innovations requires architectures that are community-wide and that capitalize on emerging technology developments. At the University of Wisconsin, the IAIMS planning group envisioned a state-wide Health IT architecture to support teaching, research and service initiatives throughout the entire state. This IAIMS planning group established a link with a regional health planning group, the Dodge Jefferson Healthier Communities Partnership. This talk will address the inception, mutual goal setting, and post-IAIMS Planning Project activities undertaken to create the technical infrastructure and community level decision making to bring a regional health information architecture into reality.

An Internal Examination And Evaluation Of The Nebraska Health And Human Services System Delivery Of Personal Assistance Services (Final Report), Jamee K. Wolfe, Lachelle Bailie

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

In 2001, the Nebraska Health and Human Services System (HHSS) applied for and received a one-year, transitional Medicaid Infrastructure Grant, provided for by the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 (TWWIIA). In 2002, HHSS applied for and received an additional three years of funding (through 2004). This combined funding allowed Nebraska to support research that examines how the opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in competitive work could be improved.

Personal assistance services (PAS) are a currently underutilized, but in many cases, necessary work support for people with disabilities. With TWWIIA funding, HHSS determined that …

How Vulnerable Is The Nation's Food Supply? Linking Food Safety And Food Security, Robin J. Strongin May 2002

How Vulnerable Is The Nation's Food Supply? Linking Food Safety And Food Security, Robin J. Strongin

National Health Policy Forum

This paper reviews the food safety regulatory apparatus in place today, especially the activities of the two lead agencies in assuring food safety — the Food and Drug Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food Safety and Inspection Service within the Department of Agriculture. It examines the system's strengths and vulnerabilities, particularly in light of the post–September 11 environment that includes the heightened threat of terrorism. The paper also touches upon legislative and budgetary proposals aimed at improving food security, including the growing but debated interest in a single food safety agency.

Pollination Biology Of The Lingonberry, Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea Subsp. Minus L., Amy Nicole Davis May 2002

Pollination Biology Of The Lingonberry, Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea Subsp. Minus L., Amy Nicole Davis

Theses (Unassigned)

The pollination biology of lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea subsp. minus L.) was researched to determine possible modes of pollination and methods to enhance pollination for increased fruit set. A viability experiment showed that pollen germinates best in a nutrient solution with 10.5 g sucrose per 100 ml. Exposing lingonberry flowers to wind speeds up to 22 km per hr resulted in little pollen release and negligible fruit set. Vibration of flowers at 170-730 Hz showed ample pollen release at all frequencies but negligible fruit set by self pollination. Although honeybees and bumblebees frequently visited lingonberry flowers, addition of hives to wild …

This qualitative research study investigated the experiences of five education faculty members about their experiences with technology. These faculty members come from different areas of education. They participated in a technology-based project, the purpose of which was to help faculty members integrate technology into their classrooms and implement technology in their instructions. Before the project, all of the faculty members had experiences with technology, such as emails, Internet searches and PowerPoint applications. During the project, most of them learned web page design and more technology integration into their curriculum and instruction. The purpose of this study is to respond to …

Alcohol-Affected Offenders: Alaska's Crime Conundrum, Maureen Frances Harwood May 2002

Alcohol-Affected Offenders: Alaska's Crime Conundrum, Maureen Frances Harwood

Arctic and Northern Studies

Offenders with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are being inadequately identified and addressed in Alaska's criminal justice system. Without recognition of the problems associated with FAS (e.g., slow cognitive pacing, language impairments, impaired ability to deal with abstract concepts such as time) the alcohol-affected individual's ability to understand and effectively participate in the criminal justice process is compromised. This thesis examines the challenges that people with FAS and other prenatal alcohol exposure conditions present for Alaska's criminal justice system. Ways of protecting people prenatally exposed to alcohol against poor life outcomes, like trouble with the law are explained. Additionally, I present …

Physiological Factors Associated With The Alteration Of Reproductive Performance Of Commercial Egg Laying Chickens Infected With F-Strain Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Matthew Rex Burnham May 2002

Physiological Factors Associated With The Alteration Of Reproductive Performance Of Commercial Egg Laying Chickens Infected With F-Strain Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Matthew Rex Burnham

Theses and Dissertations

The F-strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (FMG) is commonly used in vaccination programs to displace infections by more virulent natural or wild type Mycoplasma gallisepticum strains. However, a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for altered egg production (EP) and egg quality in commercial layers infected with FMG is important, as these alterations can cause economic loss to the United States layer industry. This study was designed to examine potential mechanism(s) responsible for alterations in EP and egg quality by FMG-inoculation. The effects of FMG on production parameters and physiological characteristics of commercial laying hens were evaluated. In isolation units, 12 …
