Teff: A New Annual Forage Grass For South Dakota?, Edward K. Twidwell, Arvid Boe, David P. Casper Jun 2002

Teff: A New Annual Forage Grass For South Dakota?, Edward K. Twidwell, Arvid Boe, David P. Casper

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Teff (Eragrostis tef Zucc. Trotter) is a major cereal crop in Ethiopia and has been grown in other African countries as a hay crop. Teff is a warm-season, annual grass that has rapid seed germination and seedling development. It also is well adapted to dry climates. These qualities indicate that teff could be used in this region of the U.S. as a supplemental forage during periods when other forage supplies are diminished. In South Dakota, late summer is when forage supplies are typically low. Teff has been marketed recently in South Dakota under the name “Dessie Summer Lovegrass.” This marketing …

Estimating Alfalfa Quality In The Field, Vance N. Owens Jun 2002

Estimating Alfalfa Quality In The Field, Vance N. Owens

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Knowledge of alfalfa nutritive value is essential for making informed forage management decisions in alfalfa-based livestock production systems. However, most harvest management and storage decisions are made with no chemical composition information because obtaining analytical data is time consuming and expensive. The quality of forage needed for a particular operation is influenced by the intended use of the forage and by the dietary requirements of a given class of livestock. The detergent fiber system of forage analysis (neutral detergent fiber, NDF; and acid detergent fiber, ADF) coupled with a measure of crude protein (CP) provide vital information for balancing rations …

Proposal Of Critical Habitat For The Northern Great Plains Breeding Population Of Piping Plovers (Charadrius Melodus) Jun 2002

Proposal Of Critical Habitat For The Northern Great Plains Breeding Population Of Piping Plovers (Charadrius Melodus)

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The purpose of the proposed action is to designate critical habitat for the northern Great Plains breeding population of piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) by utilizing provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). The purpose of the Act is to conserve the ecosystems upon which endangered and threatened species depend. Critical habitat designation identifies areas essential to the survival and recovery of the piping plover, and describes physical and biological features within critical habitat that require special management considerations to achieve conservation of the species.

The Future Of Stock Enhancements: Lessons For Hatchery Practice From Conservation Biology, Culum Brown, Rachel L. Day Jun 2002

The Future Of Stock Enhancements: Lessons For Hatchery Practice From Conservation Biology, Culum Brown, Rachel L. Day

Aquaculture Collection

The world’s fish species are under threat from habitat degradation and over-exploitation. In many instances, attempts to bolster stocks have been made by rearing fish in hatcheries and releasing them into the wild. Fisheries restocking programmes have primarily headed these attempts. However, a substantial number of endangered species recovery programmes also rely on the release of hatchery-reared individuals to ensure long-term population viability. Fisheries scientists have known about the behavioural deficits displayed by hatchery-reared fish and the resultant poor survival rates in the wild for over a century. Whilst there remain considerable gaps in our knowledge about the exact causes …

Problems And Potential For Canadian Child Welfare, K. Swift, M. Callahan Jun 2002

Problems And Potential For Canadian Child Welfare, K. Swift, M. Callahan

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Canadian child welfare is not one single system, but more than 13 systems overseen by provincial and territorial governments and First Nations jurisdictions. However, there are many similarities among systems and general trends and directions common to them. One of these is a tendency for child welfare to become isolated from communities and related services because of its increasingly complex legislation and investigative mandates (Swift, 2001). Another is the challenge of serving peoples of diverse cultural and racial backgrounds, including First Nations peoples. Of course, each jurisdiction also responds to its particular social and political context in unique ways. In …

Discussion Paper : The Translocation Of Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) And Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Into And Within Western Australia., Western Australian Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

This discussion paper has been prepared to assist in the assessment of the possible impact of the translocation of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), into and within Western Australia, for the purposes of recreational stock enhancement in public waters, non-commercial aquaculture on private properties and commercial aquaculture. In assessing the translocation of any aquatic species, economic and social benefits must be balanced with biological and environmental risks.

The Future Of Municipal Fisheries In The Philippines: Does The Philippine Fisheries Code Do Enough?, Devon Shannon Jun 2002

The Future Of Municipal Fisheries In The Philippines: Does The Philippine Fisheries Code Do Enough?, Devon Shannon

Washington International Law Journal

The allocation of fishery resources is a critical concern for the Philippines municipal fishing sector where the global problem of overfishing has taken its toll on near-shore aquatic life. The dependency of coastal Filipino communities on fishery resources for nutrition and livelihood necessitates an analysis of the 1998 Philippine Fisheries Code's ("PFC's") ability to facilitate effective marine resource allocation at the municipal level. A comparison of international instruments addressing fishery resource management with the PFC reflects a clear intent on the part of the Code's drafters to emulate accepted international standards. In some areas, however, the PFC's ambiguous language hinders …

Use A Microwave Oven To Determine Moisture Content Of Forages, Edward K. Twidwell, John J. Wagner, Nancy J. Thiex Jun 2002

Use A Microwave Oven To Determine Moisture Content Of Forages, Edward K. Twidwell, John J. Wagner, Nancy J. Thiex

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Knowing the moisture content of forages at the time of harvest and storage is essential for making and preserving high-quality hay and silage. Knowing the moisture content of stored forages is important for accurate ration formulation. A squeeze test, which involves squeezing forage into a ball and then guessing the moisture content, is a common method of determination. This method is rapid, but it lacks precision. Resistance-type moisture testers estimate moisture as a measure of electrical resistance. These devices provide estimates rapidly, but they usually are expensive (about $100 to $150) and vary in accuracy. A portable, electric drying unit …

A Comparison Between The Effects Of Diltiazem And Isosorbide Dinitrate On Digoxin Pharmacodynamics And Kinetics In The Treatment Of Patients With Chronic Ischemic Heart Failure, Afaf A. Mahgoub, Azza H. El-Medany, Ahmed S. Abdulatif

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an arteriolar dilator (diltiazem hydrochloride) versus a venodilator (isosorbide dinitrate) on digoxin kinetics and to estimate the efficacy and tolerability of these vasodilators when combined with digoxin for 10 days therapy in patients with congestive heart failure secondary to ischemic heart disease. METHODS: A double blind randomized cross over study was carried out to investigate the effect of an arteriolar dilator (diltiazem hydrochloride 180 mg/day orally) versus a venodilator (isosorbide dinitrate 30 mg/day orally) on digoxin kinetics (0.25 mg/day orally), after 10 days therapy in patients with heart failure due to ischemic heart disease. …

The Outcomes Of Trauma For Older Adults, Shaun M. Mcmillan Jun 2002

The Outcomes Of Trauma For Older Adults, Shaun M. Mcmillan

Masters Theses

Previous sociological and public health studies were analyzed to determine the effects of age, gender, mechanism of injury (fall or motor vehicle crash accident), severity of the injury, length of stay and injuries sustained on three binary response variables of discharge disposition ( discharged home, expired, or transferred to a rehabilitation facility) of older adult trauma patients. Three multiple logistic regression models were analyzed to handle the multiple predictors for the three binary response variables of discharge disposition. Over one-half (56%) of respondents were discharged home, whereas one in four patients were transferred to a rehabilitative facility, while the remaining …
