Variation And Systematics Of The Malayan Snail-Eating Turtle, Malayemys Subtrijuga (Schlegel And Müller, 1844), Timothy R. Brophy Oct 2002

Variation And Systematics Of The Malayan Snail-Eating Turtle, Malayemys Subtrijuga (Schlegel And Müller, 1844), Timothy R. Brophy

Faculty Dissertations

Allometry, sexual dimorphism, and geographic variation were studied in the Malayan snail-eating turtle, Malayemys subtrijuga (Schlegel and Müller, 1844), using regression and discriminant function analyses. Allometry was evident in M. subtrijuga from the Chao Phraya River Basin. Shell shape changed in males as carapace length increased more than shell width and height, whereas females showed proportional changes. This difference in allometric growth yielded sexually dimorphic adults. Females attained larger sizes and had relatively wider and higher shells than males. Discriminant function analysis of shell and head-stripe characters revealed a clear pattern of geographic variation that was consistent with the topography …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Inulin is a well-known fructose-based prebiotic which has been shown to stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria, a bacterial group generally considered beneficial for intestinal health. In the present study, we analyzed inulin-associated shifts in the total bacterial community of wild-type mice and mice carrying a genetically inactivated adenomatous polyposis coli tumor suppressor gene by using DNA-based approaches independent of bacterial culturability. Mice were fed a high-fat, nonfiber diet with or without inulin inclusion at a 10% (wt/wt) concentration. Cecal contents were analyzed after 0, 3, and 9 weeks on the experimental diets. Inulin inclusion significantly affected the total bacterial community …

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This paper provides an overview of research on burnout in human service workers, with an emphasis on findings relevant to social workers and other professionals in child welfare and children’s mental health and the organizations that employ them. It is intended to inform the reader about the developments in burnout research since the phenomenon was initially described, and to identify some issues and questions that need further study. Part one of the paper begins with a discussion of several definitions of burnout and its components. Part two outlines the variables that have been identified by research as antecedent to burnout, …

Early Human-Bison Population Interdependence In The Plains Ecosystem, Henry Epp, Ian Dyck Oct 2002

Early Human-Bison Population Interdependence In The Plains Ecosystem, Henry Epp, Ian Dyck

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Human population size in the Great Plains ecosystem before European contact has been of longstanding interest to scholars. The same is true of bison numbers. Given the near total dependence on bison by nonagricultural precontact humans, integrating information on both human and bison numbers from that time is of further interest, providing the focus for this paper. Recent research on the behavioral ecology of bison and related ungulates has led to the identification of two distinct, although not mutually exclusive, populations: resident and migrant herds. Moreover, migrants tend to vastly outnumber residents, often by more than 4 to 1. The …

We Remember: Dayton Area Student Writing And Artwork About The Holocaust, Dayton Holocaust Resource Center

Dayton Holocaust Resource Center Publications

The study of the Holocaust involves very personal involvement by a teacher and the interaction of his or her students. The culmination oft his study may be writings or art that release the deep feelings stirred by this study.

For the past fifteen years we have conducted the Holocaust Writing Contest and the Max May Memorial Holocaust Art Contest to encourage this expression by students. Through the contests, we have seen some remarkable student work. Hundreds of Dayton-area public and parochial children in grades six through twelve have submitted their efforts. The level of sensitivity and creativity in these works …

Theorizing Behavioral Law And Economics: A Defense Of Evolutionary Analysis And The Law, Neel P. Parekh Oct 2002

Theorizing Behavioral Law And Economics: A Defense Of Evolutionary Analysis And The Law, Neel P. Parekh

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Behavioral law and economics (BLE) provides a steady stream of empirical evidence that counters the predictions of law and economics. Despite this research and data, however, many theorists argue that BLE ultimately fails because it posits no underlying theory. This Note argues that perspectives from evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology, and the brain sciences can provide the missing motivational theory for BLE's empirical findings. The Note also examines the implications a more consistent and reasoned consideration of evolutionary analysis and the law (EA) has for our legal regime. In theorizing BLE and defending EA, this Note aims to show how evolutionary …

Identification Of A Streptolysin S-Associated Gene Cluster And Its Role In The Pathogenesis Of Streptococcus Iniae Disease, Jeffrey D. Fuller, Alvin C. Camus, Carla L. Duncan, Victor Nizet, Darrin J. Bast, Ronald L. Thune, Donald E. Low, Joyce C.S. De Azavedo

Faculty Publications

Streptococcus iniae causes meningoencephalitis and death in cultured fish species and soft-tissue infection in humans. We recently reported that S. iniae is responsible for local tissue necrosis and bacteremia in a murine subcutaneous infection model. The ability to cause bacteremia in this model is associated with a genetic profile unique to strains responsible for disease in fish and humans (J. D. Fuller, D. J. Bast, V. Nizet, D. E. Low, and J. C. S. de Azavedo, Infect. Immun. 69:1994-2000, 2001). S. iniae produces a cytolysin that confers a hemolytic phenotype on blood agar media. In this study, we characterized the …

Chrysomela Scripta, Plagiodera Versicolora (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), And Trichoplusia Ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Track Specific Leaf Developmental Stages, D.A. Wait, J.S. Coleman, C.G. Jones

Aspen Bibliography

It is well recognized that host-specialized folivores prefer to feed on young in comparison to old leaves. However, the capacity of young leaf feeders to track specific leaf developmental stages has not been clearly demonstrated. Using three insect folivores and two plant species, we show that nitrogen (N) fertilization changes leaf development and that herbivores track these changes in leaf development. Nicotiana tabacum L. and Populus deltoides Bartram were fertilized at two and three rates of N addition, respectively. Plants with high rates of N supply had faster growth, greater leaf area, and faster leaf initiation rates than plants receiving …

The Role Of Nongovernmental Organizations In African Public Policy, Andrew I. E. Ewoh Oct 2002

The Role Of Nongovernmental Organizations In African Public Policy, Andrew I. E. Ewoh

African Social Science Review

The emergence of nongovernmental organizations over the past three decades has been a positive addition to the political mix and public policy processes in Africa. Indeed, the proliferation of NGOs relationship with states in Africa can pave the way for increased governmental responsiveness and accountability. The analysis suggests that NGOs can be more effective in influencing public policy if they become aware of the policy environment and move away from a project orientation to a mobilization of other policy actors. Also, they must go beyond individual agendas and long-established roles to identify some emerging approaches to local development and resource …

Etsu Today - Fall 2002, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

Over the past year, all of us have come to a deeper appreciation of human relationships. When I wrote this column one year ago, none of us, of course, could have imagined what would transpire just days later. September 11 brought warlike conditions to our own country. Our campus reacted with shock, grief, courage, and resolve. Students, faculty, and staff joined hands in prayer for the victims, their families, and the future of the world. They wrote expressions of sorrow and love on banners. They built replicas of the World Trade Center’s twin towers using canned food, which was lovingly …

This cross-sectional study was carried out in Makkah city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from May 2000 to September 2000. A scoring system was used to document the frequency of misconceptions. The relationship of misconceptions to socio-demographic and diabetes-related variables were assessed using chi-squared tests. RESULTS: Four hundred and five (39%) patients had a high treatment misconception …

Misdiagnosing Esophageal Perforation As Esophageal Atresia, Shaheed M. Meeralebbae, Seidahmed M. Zain, Abdelbasit O. Basir, Abdullah M. Ahmed, Abomelha M. Abdullah Oct 2002

Misdiagnosing Esophageal Perforation As Esophageal Atresia, Shaheed M. Meeralebbae, Seidahmed M. Zain, Abdelbasit O. Basir, Abdullah M. Ahmed, Abomelha M. Abdullah

Saudi Medical Journal

We report a case of traumatic perforation of esophagus misdiagnosed as esophageal atresia in a 1.7 kg preterm (28 weeks) twin. Initial resistance to the passage of orogastric tube and failure of passage of contrast material down the esophagus prompted the diagnosis of esophageal atresia. Subsequently, the passage of orogastric tube as well as radiological findings at the age of 7 days made us change the diagnosis to traumatic perforation of esophagus. The baby was managed conservatively and discharged in good health at the age of 2 months. Literature is reviewed and the attention of pediatricians is drawn to this …
