Ethylene Synthesis And Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Stephen P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2002

Ethylene Synthesis And Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Stephen P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee

NASA

Closed and semi-closed plant growth chambers have long been used in studies of plant and crop physiology. These studies include the measurement of photosynthesis and transpiration via photosynthetic gas exchange. Unfortunately, other gaseous products of plant metabolism can accumulate in these chambers and cause artifacts in the measurements. The most important of these gaseous by products is the plant hormone ethylene (C2H4). In spite of hundreds of manuscripts on ethylene, we still have a limited understanding of the synthesis rates throughout the plant life cycle. We also have a poor understanding of the sensitivity of intact, rapidly growing plants to …

Resistance Status Of The Tobacco Spider Mite ( Tetranychus Evans1) To Currently Recommended Acaricides On Tomatoes ( Lycopersicon Lycopersicum) And The Effects Of These Acaricides On Natural Enemies Of Vegetable Pests, Judith Kwaramba Rowena Jan 2002

Resistance Status Of The Tobacco Spider Mite ( Tetranychus Evans1) To Currently Recommended Acaricides On Tomatoes ( Lycopersicon Lycopersicum) And The Effects Of These Acaricides On Natural Enemies Of Vegetable Pests, Judith Kwaramba Rowena

All Master’s Theses

Laboratory studies were performed on tobacco spider mites (Tetranychus evansi) collected from Chinamhora and Mutoko to investigate grower claims of resistance to commonly used acaricides. Bioassays of T evansi collected from tomatoes showed presence of resistance to dimethotae, malathion, abamectin and amitraz. The RF values for Chinamhora were 1.2 for abamectin, 1.0 for malathion and 1.4 for an1itraz and dimethoate. For Mutoko RF values were 1.2 for aban1ectin and malathion, 1.4 for amitraz while it was 12.1 for dimethoate. The farmers could have used these chemicals for a long time without changing them especially dimethoate. In addition, their water quality …

A Preferred Vision For Administering High Schools : A Reflective Essay, Gregg Eschweiler Jan 2002

A Preferred Vision For Administering High Schools : A Reflective Essay, Gregg Eschweiler

Graduate Research Papers

Without an educated population, this nation would not be as strong as it is, nor will it be as strong as it could be. We still have a strong educational focus in the state of Iowa which lends us to believe that we can stand alone. That might not be the case in the future. Our state, communities, school districts, parents, teachers and students must keep striving to be the best and not rest on its laurels. We can not afford to let a generation of our youth slip, while we entertain a policy of isolation. I believe that the …

Genetic Epidemiology Of Cleft Lip And Palate, Bonnie Pedersen Jan 2002

Genetic Epidemiology Of Cleft Lip And Palate, Bonnie Pedersen

International Journal of Global Health

Clefts of the lip and palate are birth defects with multifactorial etiology, involving important surgical, speech, social, behavioral, and developmental implications. Approximately 70% of clefts are nonsyndromic - they do not involve other types of abnormalities such as shorter limbs, shorter digits (toes or fingers), wider set eyes, and many other symptoms. A number of environmental factors also play a role in craniofacial deformities. These factors include nutritional deficiencies such as insufficient folic acid consumption or absorption, smoking, and alcohol consumption, factors relevant to socioeconomic status. The purpose of this review is to present information concerning cleft lip and palate …

Clipping Management And Nitrogen Fertilization Of Turfgrass: Growth, Nitrogen Utilization, And Quality, Kelly Kopp, Karl Guillard Jan 2002

Clipping Management And Nitrogen Fertilization Of Turfgrass: Growth, Nitrogen Utilization, And Quality, Kelly Kopp, Karl Guillard

CWEL Publications

The effect of returning grass clippings on turfgrass growth and quality has not been thoroughly examined. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of returning grass clippings in combination with varying N rates on growth, N utilization, and quality of turfgrass managed as a residential lawn. Two field experiments using a cool-season turfgrassmixturewere arranged as a 2_4 factorial in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Treatments included two clipping management practices (returned or removed) and four N rates (equivalent to 0, 98, 196, and 392 kg N ha_1 ). Soils at the two sites were …

Folate Synthesis In Plants: The First Step Of The Pterin Branch Is Mediated By A Unique Bimodular Gtp Cyclohydrolase I, Gilles J. C. Basset, Eoin P. Quinlivan, Michael J. Ziemak, Rocío Díaz De La Garza, Markus Fischer, Susi Schiffmann, Adelbert Bacher, Jesse F. Gergory Iii, Andrew D. Hanson

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCHI) mediates the first and committing step of the pterin branch of the folate-synthesis pathway. In microorganisms and mammals, GCHI is a homodecamer of ≈26-kDa subunits. Genomic approaches identified tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs specifying ≈50-kDa proteins containing two GCHI-like domains in tandem and indicated that such bimodular proteins occur in other plants. Neither domain of these proteins has a full set of the residues involved in substrate binding and catalysis in other GCHIs. The tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs nevertheless encode functional enzymes, as shown by complementation of a yeast fol2 mutant and by assaying GCHI activity …

Philippine Development: A Research Journey Through The Philippine Journal Of Development, Fernando T. Aldaba

Economics Department Faculty Publications

After 27 years of existence, the Philippine Journal of Development (PJD) is considered one of the longest running journals in the country. First published in 1974, the PJD started as a semestral publication of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and was called the NEDA Journal of Development. The Journal aimed to serve as a vehicle to disseminate the important factors affecting the development process as well as a forum where development issues could be discussed from the larger perspectives of the social sciences. With the founding of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the management of the …

Effects Of Taurine And Ginkgo Biloba Extract On Platelet Aggregation, Mitchell G. Miglis Jan 2002

Effects Of Taurine And Ginkgo Biloba Extract On Platelet Aggregation, Mitchell G. Miglis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Effects of the leaf extract Ginkgo biloba, ginkgolides A and B, and the amino acid taurine (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) on platelet aggregation was studied. All potential anitcoagulants were incubated in day one platelet-rich plasma and subjected to various agonist-induced clotting and tests and other measures of platelet viability. G. biloba extract and its respective ginkgolides had no effect on platelet aggregation in response to ADP and thrombin, while taurine exhibited prolongation of thrombin time (TT) and reduced thrombin-induced aggregation by 10%. Taurine prolonged time of initial clot formation on thrombolestographic tests, but overall clot viability remained unaffected. These data …

Handbook On Eating Disorders For Dance Teachers: A Guide To Understanding Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa And Promoting Proper Nutrition In Young Female Dancers, Jennifer Tena Krogman

Theses Digitization Project

This project discusses the problem of eating disorders in dancers. The development of eating disorders can be attributed to sociocultural development, and psychological factors. Dance places an emphasis on thinness, and the pressure to obtain ideal standards of thinness appear to be particularly salient in the development of eating disorders in dancers.

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Background

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bias and precision of 46 methods published from 1953 to 2000 for estimating resting energy expenditure (REE) of thermally injured patients.

Methods

Twenty-four adult patients with ≥20% body surface area burn admitted to a burn center who required specialized nutrition support and who had their REE measured via indirect calorimetry (IC) were evaluated. Patients with morbid obesity, human immunovirus, malignancy, pregnancy, hepatic or renal failure, neuromuscular paralysis, or those requiring a FiO2 >50% or positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) ≥10 cm H2O were excluded. One steady-state measured REE measurement (MEE) …

Title Iii Of The Ada Allows A Qualified Disabled Entrant To Use A Motorized Cart On The Professional Golf Tour: Pga Tour, Inc. V. Martin, David A. Monaghan

Duquesne Law Review

The Supreme Court of the United States held that Title III of the ADA protects access to professional golf tournaments by a qualified entrant with a disability, and that a disabled participant's use of a motorized golf cart during play would not fundamentally alter the nature of tournament play.
