Manure Matters (newsletter)
Nitrate contamination of groundwater was first detected in Holt County, Nebraska in the mid- 1960’s. From 1976 to 1990, nitrate-N concentrations increased in 90 percent of the wells sampled by the Natural Resource Districts (NRD) in the county. As a consequence of the concerns associated with this increase, the Holt County Manure Management Education Project was funded by an EPA-319 grant with cooperation among UNL Cooperative Extension, UNL Conservation and Survey Division, USDA-NRCS, the Lower Niobrara NRD, and the Upper Elkhorn NRD. The goal of the project was to educate producers on cropping and manure best management practices to protect …

Foreign Exploration For Scirtothrips Perseae Nakahara (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) And Associated Natural Enemies On Avocado (Persea Americana Miller), Mark S. Hoddle, Sueo Nakahara, Phil A. Phillips
USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory
Scirtothrips perseae Nakahara was discovered attacking avocados in California,USA, in 1996. Host plant surveys in California indicated that S. perseae has a highly restricted host range with larvae being found only on avocados, while adults were collected from 11 different plant species. As part of a management program for this pest, a ‘‘classical’’ biological control program was initiated and foreign exploration was conducted to delineate the home range of S. perseae, to survey for associated natural enemies and inventory other species of phytophagous thrips on avocados grown in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, and Brazil. Foreign …

Effects Of Gut Chemistry In Marine Bivalves On The Assimilation Of Metals From Ingested Sediment Particles, Sarah B. Griscom, Nicholas S. Fisher, Robert C. Aller, Byeong-Gweon Lee
Effects Of Gut Chemistry In Marine Bivalves On The Assimilation Of Metals From Ingested Sediment Particles, Sarah B. Griscom, Nicholas S. Fisher, Robert C. Aller, Byeong-Gweon Lee
Journal of Marine Research
Bioavailability and uptake of trace metals by benthic animals are often assumed to be limited by authigenic sulfide minerals because of their low metal solubilities and reactivities under sedimentary conditions. However, digestive processes and gut conditions such as Eh, pH, and enzyme or surfactant activity, can affect the release of ingested metals in the gut and control uptake. In a series of laboratory experiments with the deposit-feeding clam, Macoma balthica and the suspension-feeding mussel, Mytilus edulis, we assessed assimilation efficiencies (AE) of radioisotopes of Ag, Cd and Co associated with acid-volatile sulfide (AVS), iron oxide (re-oxidized AVS), and reduced …
Transport And Digestive Alteration Of Uniformly 13c-Labeled Diatoms In Mudflat Sediments, Carrie J. Thomas, Neal E. Blair
Transport And Digestive Alteration Of Uniformly 13c-Labeled Diatoms In Mudflat Sediments, Carrie J. Thomas, Neal E. Blair
Journal of Marine Research
Uniformly 13C-labeled diatoms were used to elucidate the effect deposit feeders have on the distribution and composition of phytodetritus within the seabed. Mudflat infauna contained in microcosms reacted quickly to the emplacement of labeled diatoms onto the sediment-water interface by moving the phytodetritus nonlocally during feeding and hoeing activities. Although redistribution of tracer was rapid, not all infauna exposed to the tracer ingested it. Using four species of deposit-feeding annelids that had ingested the 13C-labeled phytodetritus during the microcosm experiment, molecular-level, digestive alterations of 13C-labeled diatoms were documented. Fecal material produced by the deposit feeders had 13 …
Flume Experiments On Post-Settlement Movement In Polychaetes, Karen I. Stocks
Flume Experiments On Post-Settlement Movement In Polychaetes, Karen I. Stocks
Journal of Marine Research
The ability of benthic polychaetes to move as adults and juveniles was examined using flume experiments. The main question asked was whether post-settlement movement is a passive process predictable from the hydrodynamic characteristics of the environment and the individual, or whether active behavior is involved. In one set of experiments, the percent of individuals moving during a six-hour period in low-food conditions was compared among five species of intertidal polychaetes. Flow speed was set at a velocity that did not cause sediment erosion but did cause bedload transport of anesthetized individuals. Species varied significantly in percent of movement, with Laeonereis …

West Virginia Registered Dietitians' Knowledge And Attitudes Of Diabetes Care, Marie R. Gravely
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study addresses diabetes knowledge and attitudes of West Virginia dietitians as they relate to Medicare certified provider guidelines. A questionnaire was developed using the Diabetes Attitude Scale, questions from A CORE Curriculum for Diabetes Education, and demographic questions addressing length and type of practice, route to registration, and specialty credentials. Responses were analyzed to determine overall knowledge and attitude as well as how demographic information affects knowledge and attitude. Results indicated demographic information (except for specialty credentials and hours working with diabetes) did not have a significant effect on the dietitian’s diabetes knowledge and attitude. Specialty credentials did have …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Average Body Mass Index (BMI) and beverage intake were examined to determine if children who drank excessive amounts of beverages had a higher BMI than children who drank average amounts of beverages. Ninety-six WIC charts were reviewed. Average total fluid intake was 32.5 oz/day. For juice and total milk, the average intakes were 11.9 oz/day and 15.6 oz/day, respectively. The average intake of other drinks was 2.4 oz/day. Average BMI of children who drank excessive amounts and average amounts of total fluids was 16.143+1.60 and 16.457+1.90, respectively. No statistically significant differences were found between BMI and the consumption of total …
Effects Of Excessive Nitrogen Deposition On Foliar Nutrient Dynamics, Nutrient Concentrations, And Nutrient Ratios In A Central Appalachian Hardwood Forest, Sarah Beth Burdette
Effects Of Excessive Nitrogen Deposition On Foliar Nutrient Dynamics, Nutrient Concentrations, And Nutrient Ratios In A Central Appalachian Hardwood Forest, Sarah Beth Burdette
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Many forested systems of the eastern US are becoming significantly nitrogen (N) saturated due to chronic N deposition from the atmosphere. Nitrogen saturation has the potential to alter important internal plant processes, such as nutrient cycling. While extensive research has been conducted on the responses of soil to N saturation, considerably less research has focused on the response of plant nutrient dynamics, nutrient concentrations, and nutrient ratios to excess N. Research was conducted on two watersheds at the Fernow Experimental Forest in West Virginia: WS3 (fertilized with ammonium sulfate annually since 1989) and WS7 (untreated control). Presenescent and senesced leaves …

Using Hairy Vetch To Manage Soil Phosphorus Accumulation From Poultry Litter Applications In A Warm-Season Vegetable Rotation, Clydette M. Alsup-Egbers, Brian A. Kahn, Mark E. Payton
College of Agriculture
Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) cover crops were grown in a rotation with sweet corn (Zea mays var. rugosa Bonaf.) and muskmelon (Cucumis melo L. Reticulatus group) to evaluate the legume's ability to remove excess P from soils when poultry litter was used as a fertilizer. Fertilizer treatments were: 1) litter to meet each crop's recommended preplant N requirements (1×); 2) litter at twice the recommended rate (2×); and 3) urea at the 1× rate as the control. Following the vegetable crops, hairy vetch was planted on half of each replication, while the other half was fallowed. The vetch was …
