Paper Session Iii-B - Characterization Of Potential Iss/Space Shuttle Environmental Conditions On Growth And Development Of R. Sativus: Ground Studies For The Rasta Space Flight Experiment, E. Stryjewski, I. Eraso
Space Congress® Proceedings
Using radish as a model system, the RASTA project (Radish Assimilation in Spaceflight Testbed Atmospheres) will be investigating carbon partitioning of salad crops in microgravity. Before this goal can be accomplished, the effects of the unique environment of orbiting spacecraft on growth and development of radish must be characterized so they can be separated from those of microgravity. The environmental conditions on ISS and the space shuttle most likely to effect carbon partitioning in radish are air temperature, CO2 concentration and atmospheric contaminants. Several radish cultivars were grown in temperatures ranging from 18-30°C at ambient (400 part per million [ppm]) …

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
Sorghum and pearl millet are the most important cereal crops in West Africa where they provide 70% of total cereal production that provide the major complements in the diets of people in the region. Research progress in the improvement of sorghum and millet is, therefore, of vital importance to the well being of people in West Africa. The Hybrid Sorghum and Pearl Millet Seed Workshop in West Africa is the culmination of the research and development effort by the Institut National de Recherches Agronomiques du Niger (INRAN) , the International Sorghum and Millet Collaborative Research Support Program (INTSORMIL), and the …

Plasma And Testicular Testosterone Levels, Volume Density And Number Of Leydig Cells And Spermatogenic Efficiency Of Rabbits, A.C.S. Castro, William E. Berndtson, F. M. Cardoso
Biological Sciences
Plasma and tissue testosterone concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in 12 eight-month-old sexually mature New Zealand White rabbits and evaluated for possible associations with spermatogenic efficiency as well as with volume density and number of Leydig cells. Testicular tissue was processed histologically and histometry was performed in order to quantify germ cells, Sertoli cells and Leydig cells. Spermatogenic efficiency, reported as the ratios among germ cells (spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes and round spermatids) and by the ratio of germ cells to Sertoli cells, was not associated with testosterone levels. However, Leydig cell parameters such as number of Leydig cells per gram …

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance Interventions In Ghana And South Africa: A Synthesis Of Major Impacts And Lessons, Sam Afrane
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
International trade liberalization often implies increased potentials for export production. In order to invest in increasing capacity in agriculture, farmers need to have credit access. However, farmers in Central Europe and East Africa, among other places, are credit constrained, due to collateral reasons. A model illustrates the additional producer gains from having access to credit; the gains are composed of a price effect, an investment effect, and a social-capital externality. The model and empirical findings suggest that improvements of agricultural credit can be achieved by relying on existing social structures, such as farmers' social capital. The paper concludes that such …

Fisheries Research Report No. 133 - Preliminary Assessment And Seasonal Fluctuations In The Fish Biota Inhabiting The Concentrator Ponds Of Dampier Salt, Port Hedland, With Options For The Potential Application Of Results, Brett Molony, Gareth Parry
Fisheries Research Reports
The concentrator ponds (CPs) of Dampier Salt, Port Hedland, cover an area in excess of 7 300 ha. Water is pumped from two adjacent, mangrove-lined estuaries at certain times of the year and small and larvae fishes are carried into the ponds, becoming trapped. A survey of the fish biota within the CPs was undertaken at four time periods between May 2000 and February 2001 to identify the species of fishes present and to estimate their abundances and distribution throughout the CPs. Further, the Artemia resources within the CPs were also assessed for identification of species and quality.

Influence Of Seismic Surveys On Western Gray Whales Off Sakhalin Island, Russia In 2001, David W. Weller, Yulia V. Ivashchenko, Grigory A. Tsidulko, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Western gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) aggregate off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia during summer-autumn to feed on benthic and near-benthic prey. During summer 2001, 3D seismic surveys were conducted during a six-week period in known gray whale foraging areas off Sakhalin Island. To test the hypothesis that the distribution of gray whales on the feeding ground would shift away from nearby seismic surveying, we examined the number of whales and number of pods (dependent variables) sighted during systematic scans in relation to three independent variables (i.e. preseismic, seismic, post-seismic). Results showed the main effect of condition …

Fisheries Management Report No. 6 - Proceedings Of Marron Farming Open Day 2002, Greg B. Maguire
Fisheries Published Reports
The marron industry is of considerable importance to the Department of Fisheries, being one of the older aquaculture industries in Western Australia, and one that accounts for around half the aquaculture licence holders in the State. While it has not grown as quickly as many hoped in the past, in 2000/01, some 52.2 tonnes of marron were produced, worth $1.18 million at the farm gate.
It is regionally significant, particularly in the south-west, and depending on appropriate site selection, has considerable potential in other areas. Farms are distributed from near Geraldton to around Bremer Bay, with additional interest around Esperance. …

Behavior Of Nano-Engineered Platelets In A Coronary Artery Stenosis Model, Hua Ai
Doctoral Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in North America. Cardiac infarction caused by thrombus plaque rupture can often lead to sudden death. Arterial stenosis caused by atherosclerosis is an important precursor leading to thrombus formation. Shear stress, abnormal lipid metabolism, and subendothelial layer exposure are the major contributors to arterial thrombus formation. Platelet activation by the above factors, followed by adhesion is the basic sequence in thrombus formation.
Platelets were encapsulated with nanofilm in order to reduce platelet activation and adhesion under high shear stress. Polyions, nanoparticles and immunoglobulins were assembled in nano-organized shells on fixed bovine platelets …

Latino Families In The Perinatal Period: Cultural Issues In Dealing With The Health-Care System, J. Martin Maldonado-Duran, Maria Manguia-Wellman, Sari Lubin, Teresa Lartigue
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Migration of young Latinos and Latinas has increased in many towns in the Midwest. These young people will experience the perinatal period in a new cultural environment. We focus on the interface between families of Latino origin and the Midwest health-care system, particularly in the care of the pregnant woman or couple and in the care of the infant. Issues of culture are central in the perinatal period, and often the staff in health-care centers is not aware of the importance of several traditional and "folk" health-care beliefs in this period. These beliefs impact the care of the pregnant woman, …

Mexican-Descent Latinas’ Compliance With Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines, Evelinn A. Borrayo, Awilda Reyes
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
High mortality from invasive cervical cancer among Mexican-descent Latinas living in the Great Plains could be substantially reduced if they would utilize screening procedures regularly. To understand possible influential factors on their screening behaviors, we investigated which variables differentiate women age 50 and older who are most compliant with cervical cancer screening guidelines from those who are less compliant. Of 184 women surveyed, 100 were compliant with a yearly Pap smear while 84 were not compliant. Discriminant function analysis revealed that, apart from the significance of sociodemographic factors and acculturation, women who were most compliant significantly received more health-care provider …

Mapping Environmental Injustices: Pitfalls And Potential Of Geographic Information Systems In Assessing Environmental Health And Equity., Juliana Maantay
Publications and Research
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used increasingly to map instances of environmental injustice, the disproportionate exposure of certain populations to environmental hazards. Some of the technical and analytic difficulties of mapping environmental injustice are outlined in this article, along with suggestions for using GIS to better assess and predict environmental health and equity. I examine 13 GIS-based environmental equity studies conducted within the past decade and use a study of noxious land use locations in the Bronx, New York, to illustrate and evaluate the differences in two common methods of determining exposure extent and the characteristics of proximate populations. …
Use Of The Caulobacter Crescentus Genome Sequence To Develop A Method For Systematic Genetic Mapping, Craig Stephens, Lisandra West, Desiree Yang
Use Of The Caulobacter Crescentus Genome Sequence To Develop A Method For Systematic Genetic Mapping, Craig Stephens, Lisandra West, Desiree Yang
Biology
The functional analysis of sequenced genomes will be facilitated by the development of tools for the rapid mapping of mutations. We have developed a systematic approach to genetic mapping in Caulobacter crescentus that is based on bacteriophage-mediated transduction of strategically placed antibiotic resistance markers. The genomic DNA sequence was used to identify sites distributed evenly around the chromosome at which plasmids could be nondisruptively integrated. DNA fragments from these sites were amplified by PCR and cloned into a kanamycin-resistant (Kanr) suicide vector. Delivery of these plasmids into C. crescentus resulted in integration via homologous recombination. A set of 41 strains …
