Sponges Dominant In The Alaska Intertidal: Biology, Ecology, And Genetic Diversity, Ann Lynette Knowlton Apr 2002

Sponges Dominant In The Alaska Intertidal: Biology, Ecology, And Genetic Diversity, Ann Lynette Knowlton

Marine Biology

The role of the sponge, Halichondria panicea, in a Kachemak Bay, Alaska, intertidal community was investigated through field and laboratory experiments. The relationship between H. panicea and co-occurring macroalgae was studied and results indicate that removing macroalgae had no effect on sponge abundance. A laboratory feeding trial investigating H. panicea and its primary predator Archidoris montereyensis showed that nudibranchs consuming symbiotic sponge had higher feeding and egg production rates than individuals eating aposymbiotic sponge. In a simulated predation event, initial sponge growth rates into experimental feeding scars were high, indicating a response mechanism to tissue damage. A naturally occurring high …

Oceans, Watersheds And Humans: Facts, Myths And Realities, Henry Huntington, Steve Colt

ISER Reports

Alaskans expect a great deal from their oceans and watersheds. Commercial fishing, sport fishing, subsistence hunting, recreation, offshore oil and gas development, transportation, and tourism are among the many ways the oceans, coast, watersheds, and their resources are used. These activities, however, can strain or break the capacity of the ecosystem to sustain them and they are not always compatible. Conflicts and controversies between different user groups are increasingly common. The role of societal forces in shaping the human-aquatic relationship is often under-appreciated, but can be critical. Protecting the health of Alaska’s oceans and watersheds requires managing the interactions between …

Rural/Non-Rural Determination For Federal Subsistence Management In Alaska; Analysis Of Economic And Community Infrastructure Variables Relatives To The Determination Of Rurality., Bradford Tuck, Victor Fischer

ISER Reports

This report presents alternative methodologies for identifying rural and non-rural areas for federal subsistence management in Alaska. The report develops two alternative methodologies for distinguishing rural and non-rural populations in Alaska for federal subsistence management. The methodologies use measures drawn from the federal decennial census and the State of Alaska’s harvest records, among other relevant data sources. An overriding goal of the project was to use a minimal number of criteria that clearly, effectively, and defensibly distinguish between rural and non-rural populations. The two methodologies are tested on a selection of Alaska communities. It is the final report for the …

Nebraska Hall Of Agricultural Achievement Dinner, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

What a treat to be here tonight to celebrate the achievements of some wonderful new additions to the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement. I can think of few experiences more-gratifying than those in which we get to say a heartfelt “well-done and thank you" to people who make significant contributions to the world around them by the way they live their lives and by the places they choose to put their talents and energies.

Enhanced Gene Delivery In Vitro And In Vivo By Improved Transferrin-Lipoplexes, Conchita Tros De Ilarduya, M. A. Arangoa, M. J. Moreno-Aliaga, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Cationic liposomes and the complexes they form with DNA (lipoplexes) constitute the most promising alternative to the use of viral vectors for gene therapy. One of the limitations to their application in vivo, however, is the inhibition of gene delivery by serum. In a previous study, we demonstrated that transferrin (Tf)-lipoplexes were superior to plain lipoplexes in transfecting HeLa cells in the presence of high concentrations of serum. With the goal of obtaining efficient gene expression in vivo, we evaluated the efficacy of Tf-lipoplexes (containing DOTAP and cholesterol) in transfecting primary hepatocytes and adipocytes in the presence of high serum …
