Smart Board Chat System / David Gan Chye Ong, Chye Ong David Gan

Student Works (2000-2009)

People need to connect with other people and business processes to get their work done. Much like the step between the telegraph to the telephone, the step to Internet technology connects people with a richer flow of information. Collaboration can bring people all over the world together with more efficient use of time and at lower cost, by eliminating the need to travel. The emergence and wide-spread adoption of the World Wide Web (WWW) offers a great deal of potential for the developers of collaborative technologies, both as an enabling infrastructure and a platform for integration with existing end-user environments. …

What Makes It Into The News: A Close Look At How News Sources At 6pr And 720 Abc Radio Influence News Selection, Angela Businoska Jan 2002

What Makes It Into The News: A Close Look At How News Sources At 6pr And 720 Abc Radio Influence News Selection, Angela Businoska

Theses : Honours

One of the roles of journalists today is to select the newsworthy stories from the endless amount of information which flows into their media organisation's newsroom. So, what is news and how do journalists decide what makes it and what docs not, in the news each day? Past and present research on this topic has thus far attempted to provide a formula, or consistent approach to the news selection process. To date, these newsroom studies have often been based at an international level, with results primarily originating from interviews with journalists themselves. This suggests that there are still many aspects …

Revising Public Speaking Theory, Content, And Pedagogy: A Review Of The Issues In The Discipline In The 1990'S, Nancy Rost Goulden Jan 2002

Revising Public Speaking Theory, Content, And Pedagogy: A Review Of The Issues In The Discipline In The 1990'S, Nancy Rost Goulden

Basic Communication Course Annual

Literature from the 1990's calling for revision of basic course public speaking theory and pedagogy is examined, summarized, and organized. Discussion of sources that shape and maintain public speaking theory provides background for the reports of journal articles and conference papers categorized under (1) overall perspectives that influence theory, (2) basic theory of what characteristics constitute effective speaking, (3) appropriate course content, and (4) appropriate pedagogy.

The dominant theme for change calls for a new theoretical perspective of effective speaking rejecting emphasis on traditional speech behaviors and supported by changes in attitudes and pedagogy, characterized by flexibility, openness, reliance on …

An Examination Of The Speech Evaluation Process: Does The Evaluation Instrument And/Or Evaluator's Experience Matter?, Karen Anderson, Karla Kay Jensen

Basic Communication Course Annual

Speech evaluation forms are a useful and necessary tool of any communication course with a public speaking component. The continued investigation of how such forms are created and used is beneficial to students and teachers. In this study, raters from various experience levels graded two speeches using a combination of four evaluation forms, half of which included directions. Raters then responded to questions regarding the forms they just used.

Results indicate that experience level and form type influence the speech grade given. Additionally, raters' responses regarding the forms reveal how they view the use of forms in the speech evaluation …

Listening Treatment In The Basic Communication Course Text, Laura A. Janusik, Andrew D. Wolvin

Basic Communication Course Annual

Numerous studies have indicated that listening is instrumental for academic and professional success, and most students receive listening instruction only in the basic communication course. This study analyzed the treatment of listening in the 17 most widely used basic communication course textbooks. The majority of the textbooks did devote at least one chapter to listening; however, the treatment was generally light, atheoretical, and lacked substantive listening scholarship.

Agents As Web Services, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

Web services are extremely flexible. Most advantageously, a developer of Web services need not know who or what will use the services being provided. The paper discusses current standards for Web services, directory services and the Semantic Web. It considers how agents extend Web services in several important ways.

Agent Societies: Magnitude And Duration, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2002

Agent Societies: Magnitude And Duration, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

If you only need agents to search the Web for cheap CDs, scalability is not an issue. The Web can support numerous agents if each acts independently. In short order, however, billions of embedded agents that sense their environment and interact with us and other agents will fill our world, making the human environment friendlier and more efficient. These agents will need not only scalable infrastructures and communication services, but also scalable social services encompassing ethics and laws. Research projects are under way around the world to develop and deploy such services. The author takes a look at the critical …

Vcu... Making Richmond A Great Place To Work And Live, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute At Virginia Commonwealth University, Gregory Buck, Maria Curran, Karen Guthrie, John Pierce, Diane Simon, Jean Yerian

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute Publications

VCU, established in 1968, is a young, vibrant and rapidly growing institution. Whereas components of VCU are well established, venerable, and well-recognized institutions, VCU suffers from a lack of name recognition and reputation in comparison with our peer institutions. Similarly, there is a general lack of appreciation for the strength of VCU programs at the regional, local and even institutional level. This project is designed to showcase, at the local and institutional level, the special contributions and triumphs of VCU and its staff, including both the cutting edge research and academic accomplishments and the powerful and compelling human interest stories …

A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman Jan 2002

A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) should be legally recognized as a severe mental disorder, allowing defendants to use a diminished capacity defense in cases of accidental filicide. The author critiques the legal system's inconsistent treatment of MSBP, which often focuses on the physical harm to the child while neglecting the mother's mental state. By acknowledging MSBP as a psychiatric disorder, the law could achieve more nuanced outcomes that consider both the act and the defendant's mental condition, reducing stigma and promoting fairness in criminal liability assessments.

Address, Cardozo Women's Law Journal Most Influential Woman In The Law Award, Mary Jo White

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article reflects on the progress and challenges faced by women in the legal profession, emphasizing the importance of equal opportunity and the need to redefine success beyond traditional metrics. While significant strides have been made since the late 19th century, when women first gained access to the legal profession, disparities persist in representation and recognition at the highest levels. The author, drawing on her experiences as the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, argues that women must continue to advocate for greater representation and challenge societal norms while preserving their unique …

Plasmid-Mediated Expression Of Foreign Genes In Ehrlichia Canis, Langston Dolphus Hull Jan 2002

Plasmid-Mediated Expression Of Foreign Genes In Ehrlichia Canis, Langston Dolphus Hull

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ehrlichia canis is the etiologic agent of “tropical canine pancytopenia”, or canine ehrlichiosis. The impetus for this research was to overcome the lack of any reliable means of elucidating the genetic profiles of these illusive and historically difficult to manipulate organisms. The use of a broad-host range plasmid greatly facilitated the determination of an electro-transformation protocol. The transforming plasmid possesses a chloramphenicol antibiotic resistance gene marker (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase [CAT] gene), and a visual reporter gene marker, the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene. With primer sets designed to specifically amplify these two plasmid encoded gene markers, thus verifying the presence of …

Overpressuring, Diagenesis, And Fluid Flow At The Matagorda Island 519 Field, Offshore Texas, Gulf Of Mexico, Kera Gautreau Spears Jan 2002

Overpressuring, Diagenesis, And Fluid Flow At The Matagorda Island 519 Field, Offshore Texas, Gulf Of Mexico, Kera Gautreau Spears

LSU Master's Theses

The relations between overpressuring, diagenesis, and fluid flow in sedimentary basins are complex and multifaceted. The Matagorda Island 519 field (MI 519), offshore Texas, provides an excellent area for investigating some of these relations. The top of overpressure at MI 519 occurs at a depth of 3.5 to 3.8 km in a Lower Miocene deltaic sequence. On the basis of log-derived lithostratigraphy, the pressure seal does not appear to be lithologic in origin. Geochemical, mineralogical, and cuttings information indicate instead that the precipitation of diagenetic calcite and possibly quartz cements has been the major factor in seal development. Stratigraphic variation …

The New Orleans Press-Radio War And Huey P. Long, 1922-1936, Brian David Collins Jan 2002

The New Orleans Press-Radio War And Huey P. Long, 1922-1936, Brian David Collins

LSU Master's Theses

The introduction of radio in America in the 1920s was greeted with much fanfare by the general public and by newspapers and politicians as well. Its popularity soared as radio sets became cheaper and more accessible. Newspapers were eager to boost their circulations by featuring the latest craze; many newspapers even started their own stations as a means of publicity. As the country sank deeper into the Great Depression in the 1930s, the relationship between the country's press and radio worsened. The newspapers felt threatened that radio would take away their advertising revenue in addition to stealing their news dissemination …

Decision Makers' Thinking During The Design And Implementation Of A K-5 High-Computer-Access (Hca) Program, Constance Dianne Gutknecht Jan 2002

Decision Makers' Thinking During The Design And Implementation Of A K-5 High-Computer-Access (Hca) Program, Constance Dianne Gutknecht

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quality Control In Online Courses: Using A Social Constructivist Framework, Heidi Schweizer, Joan Whipp, Carrianne H. Hayslett

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

There has recently been increased interest in the quality of online courses. Faculty from the School of Education at Marquette University suggest using social constructivist theories in the design and development of online courses and in the training and pedagogy of online instructors to ensure quality in online courses. Quality can be designed into online courses by focusing on complex tasks, using multiple perspectives, establishing a learning community, encouraging the social negotiation of meaning and providing assistance for learners at various levels. While good design can go a long way to ensure quality in online courses, the quality of the …

Applications Of Underground Structures For The Protection Of Critical Infrastructure, George Baker Jan 2002

Applications Of Underground Structures For The Protection Of Critical Infrastructure, George Baker

Selected Works

The U.S. President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection (PCCIP), convened in the wake of the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, concluded that the nation’s physical security and economic security depend on our critical energy, communications, and computer infrastructures. While a primary motivating event for the establishment of the commission was the catastrophic physical attack of the Murrah Building, it is ironic that the commission focused its attention primarily on cyber threats. Their rationale was that cyber vulnerabilities posed a new, unaddressed challenge to infrastructure security. This approach was further questioned by the events of September 11, …

Researching The History Of Software: Mining Internet Resources In The "Old World," "New World,"And The "Wild West", Philip Frana

Selected Works

So wrote the great philosopher and poet Jorge Augustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana in his essay" The Elements and Function of Poetry."[1] Without doubt, the advent of the early Web unleashed a mania, an unreasonable recklessness that to this day resists being swept back under the rug. How can we tease" sanity" out of the Web? Can the historian put this madness to good use?

Copyright Infringement And Peer-To-Peer Technology, Niels Schaumann Jan 2002

Copyright Infringement And Peer-To-Peer Technology, Niels Schaumann

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, I will analyze the activities of peer-to-peer ("P2P") users to determine more precisely which, if any, of their actions infringe copyright. In Part II, I will describe the process of copyright lawmaking and the recent evolution of copyright law in response to technology. This discussion will include a brief description of conventional and P2P network technology. A copyright analysis of user activities on P2P networks follows in Part III, where I argue that the nature of copyright legislation requires courts to be especially careful and precise in determining the contours of infringing noncommercial conduct by members of …
