Compelled Expression And The Public Forum Doctrine, Howard M. Wasserman Jan 2002

Compelled Expression And The Public Forum Doctrine, Howard M. Wasserman

Faculty Publications

This Article analyzes the theory underlying the Fist Amendment protection against being compelled by government to utter, present, or fund unwanted expression. The author creates a three-part model for determining when the fire speech rights of an objecting payer have been triggered. Under that model, First Amendment rights are implicated when there has been an actual government compulsion requiring an individual to give money to, or for the express benefit of, a specific private speaker for some use that, in itself, should be understood as expressive. This model strikes a necessary balance between the important theoretical underpinnings of the protection …

Reading Louis L'Amour's Hondo, Joseph Mills Jan 2002

Reading Louis L'Amour's Hondo, Joseph Mills

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks, I know it’s literature and I know it will be read 100 years from now.
—Louis L'Amour on his work (Jackson 168)

In 1946, publisher and editor Leo Margulies invited Louis L’Amour to a party in New York. Each of them had a problem. L’Amour, having served in the Army during World War II, had recently returned to the States to discover the pulp fiction markets in which he had established himself as a writer were changing. In the 1930s, he had sold numerous adventure, sports, and detective stories to magazines …

Articles

We present the 158 standard stars that define the u'g'r'i'z' photometric system. These stars form the basis for the photometric calibration of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The defining instrument system and filters, the observing process, the reduction techniques, and the software used to create the stellar network are all described. We briefly discuss the history of the star selection process, the derivation of a set of transformation equations for the UBVRcIc system, and plans for future work. Arab Dress: A Short History, From the Dawn of Islam to Modem Times. By YADIDA KALFON STILLMAN. Edited by NORMAN A. STILLMAN. Themes in Islamic Studies, vol. 2. Leiden: BRILL, 2000. Pp. xxxii + 240, plates, figs.

Billowing folds, exquisite pleats, tightly wound turbans, flowing burqas, short square kerchiefs-the dramatic drapery of Islamic fashion fills the quiet spaces of our daily news coverage; yet the garments illustrated and their significance often pass without verbal notice. Little would Yedida Stillman ever have anticipated the widespread presence of the Islamic vestimentary system in Western media a short three years after her death …

Mycobacterium Bovis–Infected White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus): Detection Of Immunoglobulin Specific To Crude Mycobacterial Antigens By Elisa, W. Ray Waters, Mitchell V. Palmer, Diana L. Whipple

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have recently emerged as a source of Mycobacterium bovis infection for cattle within North America. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibody response of M. bovis–infected deer to crude mycobacterial antigens. Deer were experimentally inoculated with M. bovis strain 1315 either by intratonsilar instillation or by exposure to M. bovis–infected (i.e., in contact) deer. To determine the time course of the response, including the effects of antigen administration for comparative cervical skin testing, serum was collected periodically and evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for immunoglobulin (i.e., IgG heavy …

Nitric Oxide Production As An Indication Of Mycobacterium Bovis Infection In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), W. R. Waters, M. V. Palmer, R. E. Sacco, D. L. Whipple

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

White-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) are reservoirs for Mycobacterium bovis in northeast Michigan, USA. Production of nitric oxide (NO) by activated macrophages is a potent mechanism of mycobacterial killing. The capacity of macrophages to produce NO, however, varies among mammalian species. The objective of this study was to determine if mononuclear cells from white-tailed deer produce nitrite as an indication of NO production and, if so, is NO produced in response to stimulation with M. bovis antigens. Supernatants were harvested from adherent peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures that had been stimulated with either Mannheimia haemolytica lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or …

Bovine Tuberculosis In Michigan Wildlife And Livestock, Stephen M. Schmitt, Daniel J. O'Brien, Colleen S. Brunning-Fann, Scott D. Fitzgerald

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Since 1994, the state of Michigan has recognized a problem with bovine tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, in wild white-tailed deer from a 12-county area in northeastern Lower Michigan. A total of 65,000 free-ranging deer have been tested, and 340 have been found to be positive for M. bovis. The disease has been found in other wildlife species, and, in 1998, in domestic cattle, where to date 13 beef cattle and 2 dairy cattle herds have been diagnosed with bovine TB. Unfortunately, the situation is unique in that there have never been reports of self-sustaining bovine TB …

Análisis Narrativo Del Recuerdo En 'El Regreso' Y 'Del Cemento. La Trampa De Cemento', De Martín De Ugalde, Iker González-Allende, Joseba Pérez Moreno

Progress On Geoenvironmental Models For Selected Mineral Deposit Types, Robert R. Seal Ii, Nora K. Foley Jan 2002

Progress On Geoenvironmental Models For Selected Mineral Deposit Types, Robert R. Seal Ii, Nora K. Foley

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Since the beginning of economic geology as a subdiscipline of the geological sciences, economic geologists have tended to classify mineral deposits on the basis of geological, mineralogical, and geochemical criteria, in efforts to systematize our understanding of mineral deposits as an aid to exploration. These efforts have lead to classifications based on commodity, geologic setting (Cox and Singer, 1986), inferred temperatures and pressures of ore formation (Lindgren, 1933), and genetic setting (Park and MacDiarmid, 1975; Jensen and Bateman, 1979). None of these classification schemes is mutually exclusive; instead, there is considerable overlap among all of these classifications. A natural outcome …

Mycobacterium Smegmatis D-Alanine Racemase Mutants Are Not Dependent On D-Alanine For Growth, Ofelia Chacon, Zhengyu Feng, N. Beth Harris , Nancy E. Caceres, Garry Adams, Raul G. Barletta Jan 2002

Mycobacterium Smegmatis D-Alanine Racemase Mutants Are Not Dependent On D-Alanine For Growth, Ofelia Chacon, Zhengyu Feng, N. Beth Harris , Nancy E. Caceres, Garry Adams, Raul G. Barletta

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mycobacterium smegmatis is a fast-growing nonpathogenic species particularly useful in studying basic cellular processes of relevance to pathogenic mycobacteria. This study focused on the D-alanine racemase gene (alrA), which is involved in the synthesis of D-alanine, a basic component of peptidoglycan that forms the backbone of the cell wall. M. smegmatis alrA null mutants were generated by homologous recombination using a kanamycin resistance marker for insertional inactivation. Mutants were selected on Middlebrook medium supplemented with 50 mM D-alanine and 20 μg of kanamycin per ml. These mutants were also able to grow in standard and minimal media without …

Gemfibrozil, A Lipid-Lowering Drug, Inhibits The Induction Of Nitric-Oxide Synthase In Human Astrocytes, Kalipada Pahan, Malabendu Jana, Xiaojuan Liu, Bradley S. Taylor, Charles Wood, Susan M. Fischer Jan 2002

Gemfibrozil, A Lipid-Lowering Drug, Inhibits The Induction Of Nitric-Oxide Synthase In Human Astrocytes, Kalipada Pahan, Malabendu Jana, Xiaojuan Liu, Bradley S. Taylor, Charles Wood, Susan M. Fischer

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Gemfibrozil, a lipid-lowering drug, inhibited cytokine- induced production of NO and the expression of inducible nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS) in human U373MG astroglial cells and primary astrocytes. Similar to gemfibrozil, clofibrate, another fibrate drug, also inhibited the expression of iNOS. Inhibition of human iNOS promoter-driven luciferase activity by gemfibrozil in cytokine-stimulated U373MG astroglial cells suggests that this compound inhibits the transcription of iNOS. Since gemfibrozil is known to activate peroxisome proliferator- activated receptor-α (PPAR-α), we investigated the role of PPAR- α in gemfibrozil-mediated inhibition of iNOS. Gemfibrozil induced peroxisome proliferator-responsive element (PPRE)-dependent luciferase activity, which was inhibited by the expression of …

Derivation Of Risk Based Wipe Surface Screening Levels For Industrial Scenarios, Lisa M. May, Bonnie Gaborek, Tony Pitrat, Laura Peters Jan 2002

Derivation Of Risk Based Wipe Surface Screening Levels For Industrial Scenarios, Lisa M. May, Bonnie Gaborek, Tony Pitrat, Laura Peters

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The environmental characterization of building interiors and other surfaces has generally been performed with wipe-sampling because it is a non-destructive technique. There is no consensus, however, as to the interpretation of the results of wipe-sampling. Specifically, there is not a standardized method to determine if chemicals found at sampled levels pose a threat to human health. A methodology was developed, based on acceptable health risk levels, to derive screening levels for evaluating wipe-sampling results pertaining to industrial scenarios. The methodology was based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Region IX Preliminary Remediation Goal (PRG) approach; a multi-exposure methodology …

Peacock Alley: Highway 41 And The Growth Of The Chenille Bedspread Industry, Ashley Callahan

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In the fall of 1935. a newspaper editor traveled from Oklahoma City to Atlanta to attend a baseball game, and along the way encountered a stretch of road near Dalton. Georgia known as Bedspread Boulevard. He recorded his experiences in his daily column: "Twisting through northern Georgia late Saturday afternoon, dodging cotton wagons and trying to get an eyeful of the gorgeous tints that glorified the turning trees in the mountains, I thought I saw a washing strung on a line by the roadside. Soon another flashed past. Then they followed in regular succession. . . . Is it possible …
