Technology has changed drastically since my arrival at Asbury Theological Seminary as media librarian in 1981. We have come a long way from thermal transparencies and black and white reel to reel video. However, be assured that since technology is constantly changing, I am always learning as we go through each class. I will work actively with you as we move through this course together.

The Three Stages To Successful Appellate Advocacy Before The Federal Circuit, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 238 (2002), Charles W. Shifley Jan 2002

The Three Stages To Successful Appellate Advocacy Before The Federal Circuit, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 238 (2002), Charles W. Shifley

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

To succeed at the CAFC, the advocate must succeed in three stages of appeal. The first stage of appeal is actually the stage of proceedings in the trial court. The trial court proceedings are the first stage of appeal because in the absence of correct advocacy in the trial court, there is no opportunity for appeal. The action in the trial court need not be the success of winning at trial. It must, however, at least be the success of preserving issues for appeal – preserving critical error that cannot be remedied at the trial level. In the second stage …

Go To Jail - Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Pay Civil Damages: The United States’ Hesitation Towards The International Convention On Cybercrime’S Copyright Provisions, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 364 (2002), Adrienne N. Kitchen

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The problem of combating copyright infringement increases tenfold when considered in light of today’s global and digital environment. As more authors seek copyright protection, others seek to get around it by evading jurisdictional reach. The Council of Europe has developed the world’s first International Convention on Cybercrime, which incorporates harsh substantive copyright provisions but neglects to include effective enforcement protocols. This Comment proposes that the United States not rush to adopt the Council of Europe’s Convention, but rather seek a more definitive and effective solution in a singularly-focused agreement on intellectual property rights in a global economic context.

The Nexus Requirement And The Fatal Injury: Does An Offer To Sell An Infringing Product Give Rise To A Duty To Defend Under A Cgl?, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 344 (2002), Willard L. Hemsworth Iii Jan 2002

The Nexus Requirement And The Fatal Injury: Does An Offer To Sell An Infringing Product Give Rise To A Duty To Defend Under A Cgl?, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 344 (2002), Willard L. Hemsworth Iii

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Case law in the area of patent infringement has held that patent infringement cannot occur in the course of an insured's advertising activities as a matter of law. In 1996, the United States added “offer to sell” as one of the enumerated offenses of direct patent infringement to 35 U.S.C. §271(a). Since that time, there has been little deviation or fluctuation from the above mentioned principle, especially in litigation where a patentee’s search for insurance coverage from their CGL policies “Adverting Injury” provision. This Comment discusses the necessity of the court system to reexamine the modification to 35 U.S.C. §271(a), …

Physician-Related Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Caribbean Women In Toronto, Ilene Hyman, Punam Mony Singh, Marta Meana, Usha George, Lilian M. Wells, Donna E. Stewart Jan 2002

Physician-Related Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Caribbean Women In Toronto, Ilene Hyman, Punam Mony Singh, Marta Meana, Usha George, Lilian M. Wells, Donna E. Stewart

Psychology Faculty Research

BACKGROUND: Minority women in Canada are less likely to be screened for cervical cancer than their counterparts in the general population, despite the fact that the proportion of these women who consult a general practitioner about their health each year is similar to minority women. This study examined the physician and practice characteristics associated with Pap testing and perceived barriers to Pap testing of family physicians serving the Caribbean community of Toronto.

METHODS: A mail-back questionnaire was sent to Toronto family physicians practicing in neighborhoods with a high proportion of Caribbean Canadians.

RESULTS: Although 79.7% of the 64 participating physicians …

Alcohol Use And Perceptions Of Alcohol Use Among Biology, Criminal Justice, Health Science, And Psychology Capstone Students At Grand Valley State University, Rebecca Postma

Masters Theses

This study brought the widely used Rutgers PRSP survey to upper level students in biology, criminal justice, health science and psychology capstone classes in the academic year of 2000/2001. The survey explores student perceptions of their own alcohol use, of their friends’ use, and that of other students. Data from 291 participants reveals gender differences in perception, differences in self-reported drinking habits among the four capstone groups, and differences between this group of participants and their expectations of other students’ drinking. These areas of information along with other interesting findings give important insight into the upper level students of Grand …

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

Internal and external dose coefficient values have been calculated for 14 anthropogenic radionuclides which are not currently presented in Federal Guidance Reports Nos. 11, 12, and 13 or Publications 68 and 72 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Internal dose coefficient values are reported for inhalation and ingestion of 1 μm and 5 μm AMAD particulates along with the f1 values and absorption types for the adult worker. Internal dose coefficient values are also reported for inhalation and ingestion of 1 μm AMAD particulates as well as the f1 values and absorption types for members of the …

A Phenomenological Study: Mid-Career Changer Transitions Through Levels Of Expertise, Merrie Lynne Schroeder Jan 2002

A Phenomenological Study: Mid-Career Changer Transitions Through Levels Of Expertise, Merrie Lynne Schroeder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how two midlife adult men experienced different levels of expertise as they transitioned between non-teaching and teaching professions. Of further interest were the unique qualities that these mid career changers brought to secondary education and their recommendations for improving preparation, induction, and retention of midlife career changers in teaching; The study examined the transition experiences through three dimensions: (1) the levels of creativity in the context of environments; (2) the physical, social, and emotional development of the individuals; and (3) the theoretical framework of expertise. Semistructured interviews were conducted, and analyses …

Teaching And Assessment Practices Of Instructors In Two Public Community Colleges In Nevada, Simon A Lei Jan 2002

Teaching And Assessment Practices Of Instructors In Two Public Community Colleges In Nevada, Simon A Lei

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine variations of teaching and assessment strategies based on status and education level of faculty members at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) and the Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). To facilitate this study, a survey instrument was developed and distributed to 400 randomly selected faculty members employed at CCSN and TMCC, with an overall response rate of 45.8%; Adjunct and nondoctorate instructors focused significantly more on lectures than their full-time and doctorate colleagues. Full-time instructors, however, placed significantly more emphasis on class discussion, slide/powerpoint presentation, lab teaching, and distance learning compared …
