The Business Of Expression: Economic Liberty, Political Factions And The Forgotten First Amendment Legacy Of Justice George Sutherland, 10 Wm. & Mary Bill Rts. J. 249 (2002), Samuel R. Olken

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

In The Business of Expression: Economic Liberty, Political Factions And The Forgotten First Amendment Legacy of Justice George Sutherland, Samuel Olken traces the dichotomy that emerged in constitutional law in the aftermath of the Lochner era between economic liberty and freedom of expression. During the 1930s, while a deeply divided United States Supreme Court adopted a laissez faire approach to economic regulation, it viewed with great suspicion laws that restricted the manner and content of expression. During this period, Justice George Sutherland often clashed with the majority consistently insisting that state regulation of private economic rights bear a close and …

Skin Cancer Screening Program And Analysis, Jerwana A. Laster

Honors Capstones

Skin cancer is the most common and the most preventable form of cancer. Nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, while melanoma is associated with intense episodes of ultraviolet exposure resulting in sunburns. Numerous risk factors are associated with the development of skin cancer. These include exposure to ultraviolet radiation; phenotypic factors such as skin type, eye and hair color, tendency to bum and tan and having freckles and moles; a personal or family history of skin cancer; and occupational sun exposure. Primary prevention behaviors include applying SPF 15+ sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure, reapplying SPF …

The Consequences Of Cranial-Facial Anomalies, Elissa Marie Andalina

Honors Capstones

Everyday communication is essential. Not being able to communicate efficiently can pose many threats to a person with a communicative disorder. Throughout the process of my literature review, I have come to realize that the world of the speech-language pathologist is one of heterogeneity, and one must be able to expect the unexpected. As a future speech-language pathologist, I will be working with adults and children from diverse cultural backgrounds. To add to me knowledge as an undergraduate, I chose to research the topic of cranial-facial anomalies, because of my deep-rooted interest in helping children and adults. I chose to …

Honors Capstones

Team collaboration is an important part of working in business today. With the advancement of technology, individuals can benefit by using electronic collaboration in a variety of environments including offices, schools, and homes. As a research interest, I have recently become fascinated by how technology can benefit users in these settings through electronic collaboration tools. Therefore, I have developed two hypotheses for my area of research interest. First, the frequency of technology usage by students after two weeks using the tool in a team setting will increase. Second, the acceptance of technology by students after two weeks using the tool …

Boys' Aggression And Violence : A Lack Of Emotional Awareness, Samantha Lynn Flippin Jan 2002

Boys' Aggression And Violence : A Lack Of Emotional Awareness, Samantha Lynn Flippin

Honors Capstones

As boys enter into the beginning years of adolescence, they begin a journey into a completely different world. The onset of puberty results in physical and cognitive changes that are often unexpected and challenging. As the biological changes begin, adolescents transition into middle school, with more expectations and responsibilities from the adults in their lives. Unfortunately for boys, there are no outlets for all the frustration, fear, embarrassment, anger, or other intense emotions caused by these transitions. The purpose of this essay is to suggest a new way to examine the aggression and violence of boys. I propose that boys …

An Evaluation Of Relationship Marketing And Customer Retention Practices In The Hotel Industry, Lisa Kenny Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Relationship Marketing And Customer Retention Practices In The Hotel Industry, Lisa Kenny

Theses

Customer relationships have received considerable attention from both academics and practitioners. It is accepted that relationship marketing is keeping, not just getting customers, (Berry, 1983). However, it has been criticised that firms frequently focus on attracting customers (the “first act”) but then pay little attention to what they should do to keep them (the “second act”) (Berry and Parasuraman, 1991). It has been demonstrated that it is far less expensive to retain a customer than to acquire a new one. The increasing emphasis of relationship marketing is based on the assumptions that building committed customer relationships results in guest satisfaction, …

Breaking Seed Dormancy In Three Poaceae Species, Heidi Jo Larson Jan 2002

Breaking Seed Dormancy In Three Poaceae Species, Heidi Jo Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seed dormancy is a major impediment to germination testing in seed testing laboratories. Dormant seeds are alive but do not germinate under conditions favorable for germination of non-dormant seeds of the same species. Dormancy in many p􀊆ant species can be broken using a single ·treatment or a combination of treatments. Treatments commonly used are light or dark, various temperature regimes, prolonged exposure to cold treatments (pre-chilling), and the use of growth hormones or other chemicals. Three Poaceae species, winter wheat (Triticum aestiivum), prairie drop seed V (Sporobolus heterolepis), and prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), were the subject …
