Relationship Marketing Strategy, Patricia Sorce Jan 2002

Relationship Marketing Strategy, Patricia Sorce

Books

The purpose of this research is to understand the impact of relationship marketing strategy on the demand for customized communication through printing. Though many marketing executives report that they are using a relationship marketing strategy, this has not resulted in high demand for variable data printing. Is it a failure of strategy or a failure of implementation? Two exploratory studies are presented to answer this question. First, the foundations of relationship marketing strategy are presented. In particular, the central role of loyalty is discussed as the mediating factor in building relationships with customers. Using the concepts of brand equity, value …

Environmental Management In Lithographic Printing, Sandra Rothenberg, Rafael Toribio, Monica Becker

Books

With approximately 62,355 firms and sales of $210 billion annually, the printing industry is a significant contributor to the overall U.S. economy. The printing industry is also an important environmental actor in several major areas, such as use of paper (about 8 percent of all the wood cut down worldwide is used for paper production, much of which is used in printing), use of hazardous materials in printing inks, and production of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from cleaning solvents used in the printing process. Regulatory standards and social pressures are requiring printing fi rms to reduce their use of …

Computer-Supported Collaborative Knowledge Construction Learning Environment / Siti Soraya Abdul Rahman, Abdul Rahman Siti Soraya

Student Works (2000-2009)

The current interest in the use of information communication technology (ICT) has made it feasible to consider constructivism principles within the context of the technology-mediated higher education. This is primarily due to advances in ICT resulting in an effective means to implement constructivism principles, which would be difficult to accomplish with other media. In this development, computers play an important role. Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), especially, offers promising innovations and tools for restructuring teaching-learning processes to prepare students for education today. An attempt is made in this thesis to explore the current pedagogical perspectives of learning on educational practices …

Multiple Perspectives On The Services Received And Funding For Students With Individual Education Plans, Christine Machnick Jan 2002

Multiple Perspectives On The Services Received And Funding For Students With Individual Education Plans, Christine Machnick

Honors Capstones

Students with special needs have rights that are guaranteed to them by the federal law IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities with Education Act). The students are their parents need to be infonned of their rights. If they are not well infonned the student might be disadvantaged. The parents need to be advocates for their child. The parents need to understand special education and the rights that their child has to be effective advocates. The rising cost of education often cause students not to receive the services in which they are entitled. The purpose of this project was to research the services …

Pka Phosphorylation Of Src Mediates Camp's Inhibition Of Cell Growth Via Rap1, John M. Schmitt, Philip J. S. Stork Jan 2002

Pka Phosphorylation Of Src Mediates Camp's Inhibition Of Cell Growth Via Rap1, John M. Schmitt, Philip J. S. Stork

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

In fibrolast cells, cAMP antagonizes growth factor activation of ERKs and cell growth via PKA and the small P protein Rap1. We demonstrate here that PKA's activation of Rap1 was mediated by the Rap1 guanine nucleotide exchange factor C3G, the adaptor Crk-L, the scaffold protein Cbl, and the tyrosine kinase Src. Src was required for cAMP activation of Rap1 and the inhibition of ERKs and cell growth. PKA activated Src both in vitro and in vivo by phosphorylation was required for cAMP's activation of Src and Rap1, as well as cAMP's inhibition of ERKs and cell proliferation. This study identifies …

The Regulation And Function Of Inositol Phosphorylceramide Synthase In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angeleah Arlene Browdy Jan 2002

The Regulation And Function Of Inositol Phosphorylceramide Synthase In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angeleah Arlene Browdy

Open Access Dissertations

IPC Synthase has been shown to be an essential membrane bound enzyme in yeast that catalyzes the transfer of PI to ceramide to yield the primary sphingolipid found in yeast, Inositolphosphorylceramide. A biochemical approach was taken to investigate the biological factors that regulate IC synthase activity in order to better understand the sphingolipid synthesis. A highly purified IPC synthase was purified over 1000-fold from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by a procedure that included Triton X-100 solubilization, as well as a series of ion exchange and hydrophobic column chromatography steps. The highly purified enzyme fraction contained three major bands at 45, …

A Generational History Of Environmental Law And Its Grand Themes: A Near Decade Of Garrison Lectures, Jeffrey G. Miller

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

I have been privileged to hear, enjoy and learn from the talks of each of our Garrison Lecturers during the last eight years, as well as our discussions with them here today. In preparation for my duties as a summarizer, I studied their talks, printed in our Pace Environmental Law Review. I was delighted to find that the body of their commentary is far more than the sum of its parts. Together our lecturers take us on a grand journey through the history of modern environmental law, its heroes and villains, its accomplishments and its weaknesses. Together they sound all …

Toward Democratic Education: The Importance Of Culturally Responsive Leadership In 21st Century Schools, Donna M. Davis Jan 2002

Toward Democratic Education: The Importance Of Culturally Responsive Leadership In 21st Century Schools, Donna M. Davis

Trotter Review

The author defines culturally responsive leadership as "essentially a process" by which communities create systems that support democratic education. The author explores relevant education scholarship and literary texts to better define "democratic freedom," and the essay examines issues related to democratic education and the role of educators and community members in creating democratic schools. The author argues that humanistic, child-centered, democratic schools are not only essential for the development of the sense of self that enables one to experience true freedom, but democratic schools are also necessary to the goal of changing the conditions that create inequities. Davis outlines barriers …

Brief 11: Partnering For Accountability: The Role Of The Chief Financial Officer At An Academic Institution, New England Resource Center For Higher Education, University Of Massachusetts Boston

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

There is rarely a perception in colleges and universities that everyone owns the financial plan. Deans, department chairs, and division heads are most concerned with their own budgets, rather than the aggregate. Mythologies about how the academic and financial sides of the house operate create artificial divisions and compromise the development of shared responsibility. Driven by myth, each side tends to view the other as a threat to its values and priorities. These views often stereotype the other in ways that become self-fulfilling prophesies. For example, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) believe that academics are inefficient and that CFOs, with their …

Dwarf Crop Response To A 16 Or 24 Hr Photoperiod Under Low-Light Conditions, Joseph F. Romagnano, Emily Mills, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2002

Dwarf Crop Response To A 16 Or 24 Hr Photoperiod Under Low-Light Conditions, Joseph F. Romagnano, Emily Mills, Bruce Bugbee

Dwarf Crops

Plants were grown in ambient lab conditions under cool white fluorescent lights at a PPF of 90 µmol m-2 s-1 and a photoperiod of either 16 or 24 hours. Plants were watered with tap water once each day. Nutrients were supplied by Osmocote Plus slow-release fertilizer mixed into the media at approximately 7 g per 2 L pot.

Rice, and soybeans become excessively elongated and could not practically be grown at this low light level. Tomatoes, peppers and peas were successfully grown. The life cycle for peas and peppers was two to three times longer than in higher light. Triton …

Ethylene Synthesis And Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Stephen P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2002

Ethylene Synthesis And Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Stephen P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee

NASA

Closed and semi-closed plant growth chambers have long been used in studies of plant and crop physiology. These studies include the measurement of photosynthesis and transpiration via photosynthetic gas exchange. Unfortunately, other gaseous products of plant metabolism can accumulate in these chambers and cause artifacts in the measurements. The most important of these gaseous by products is the plant hormone ethylene (C2H4). In spite of hundreds of manuscripts on ethylene, we still have a limited understanding of the synthesis rates throughout the plant life cycle. We also have a poor understanding of the sensitivity of intact, rapidly growing plants to …

Business Method Patents And Patent Floods, Michael J. Meurer Jan 2002

Business Method Patents And Patent Floods, Michael J. Meurer

Faculty Scholarship

Technological breakthroughs occasionally set off floods of inventions and associated patents. The decline of the business method exception to patentability is likely to increase the frequency of patent floods. Future technological breakthroughs might now cause two different patent floods: a flood of patents covering the relevant technology, and a flood of patents covering business methods in the new market opened by the breakthrough. Furthermore, a technological breakthrough is no longer a precondition for a patent flood. Any factor that opens a new market might cause a future flood of business method patents.

A flood of related patents in a new …

Behavioral Finance And Investor Governance, Charles B. Craver Jan 2002

Behavioral Finance And Investor Governance, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The efficient market hypothesis is a special case in finance. It explains only tiny fractions of observed phenomena. Perhaps its major contribution is a formal definition of an ideal market world, to which policy formulations may be directed and against which they can be measured. Indeed, it seems unlikely that the infirmities of market action ever will be so minuscule as to render the EMH more than a special case, though it may explain more in the future than it does now. However things evolve, during the evolutionary course the shackles of the EMH should be unloosed from corporate and …

Sharing Accounting's Burden: Business Lawyers In Enron's Dark Shadows, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2002

Sharing Accounting's Burden: Business Lawyers In Enron's Dark Shadows, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A familiar pass-the-buck pas de deus in deal meetings occurs when the accountant says, after an impasse, "that's a legal problem" while the lawyer says "that's an accounting problem." The truth is, both are right; the trouble is, as Enron shows, prevailing professional cultures create a crack between law and accounting that resolute fraud artists exploit, not cultures that emphasize the intersection of law and accounting that should foil would-be fraudsters. As policymakers rush to respond to Enron, this perspective on law and accounting should be appreciated, as should Enron's place in soecity's parade of corporate debacles. At Enron's core …

Current Issues In The Changing Roles And Practices Of Community Economic Development Lawyers, Susan R. Jones Jan 2002

Current Issues In The Changing Roles And Practices Of Community Economic Development Lawyers, Susan R. Jones

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article, part of a symposium entitled "Lawyering for a New Democracy," explores current issues related to the changing roles of public interest lawyers engaged in Community Economic Development (CED) in a new democracy. After discussing current issues and trends in CED practice, the author concludes that CED is inherently privatized and is becoming more so with the national emphasis on economic self-sufficiency. The author provides lessons from law school clinical practice of enhanced strategic collaborations and highlights current trends and issues involving technology, leadership development, community organizing, asset accumulation, and social capital. Furthermore, leadership development and community organizing are …

Access And Aggregation: Privacy, Public Records, And The Constitution, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2002

Access And Aggregation: Privacy, Public Records, And The Constitution, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this article, Professor Solove develops a theory to reconcile the tension between transparency and privacy in the context of public records. Federal and state governments maintain public records containing personal information spanning an individual's life from birth to death. The web of state and federal regulation that governs the accessibility of these records generally creates a default rule in open access to information. Solove contends that the ready availability of public records creates a significant problem for privacy because various bits of information when aggregated paint a detailed portrait of a person's life that Solove refers to as a …

Digital Dossiers And The Dissipation Of Fourth Amendment Privacy, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2002

Digital Dossiers And The Dissipation Of Fourth Amendment Privacy, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this article, Professor Solove examines the increasing information flow from the private sector to the government, especially in light of the response to September 11, 2001. In today's Information Age, private sector entities are gathering an unprecedented amount of personal information about individuals, and the data is increasingly being accessed by government law enforcement officials. This government information gathering takes place outside the bounds of the Fourth Amendment, since the Supreme Court held in Smith v. Maryland and United States v. Miller that the Fourth Amendment does not apply to records held by third parties. Law enforcement officials can, …

How To Construct An Underclass, Or How The War On Drugs Became A War On Education, Eric D. Blumenson, Eva Nilsen Jan 2002

How To Construct An Underclass, Or How The War On Drugs Became A War On Education, Eric D. Blumenson, Eva Nilsen

Faculty Scholarship

The war on drugs has spawned a second front-a war on education. The casualties of this war are all poor or lower-income people who cannot afford to buy a private education. This article details the consequences of this other war, and explores some legislative and litigation strategies for reclaiming educational opportunity for all Americans. First, however, we must set out in more detail the laws and policies that now deploy educational privation as punishment in public schools, colleges, and prisons.

System And Lifeworld In Habermas's Theory Of Law, Hugh Baxter Jan 2002

System And Lifeworld In Habermas's Theory Of Law, Hugh Baxter

Faculty Scholarship

Jürgen Habermas's recent work on law and democracy divides into two parts. With his "discourse theory of law and democracy," Habermas seeks to explain the conditions under which modern constitutional legal and political orders may claim legitimacy. Here Habermas's method is primarily philosophical and legal-theoretical. The second part of the project – the part on which this article focuses – develops what Habermas calls his "communication theory of society." Here Habermas seeks to "translate" the normative conclusions of his discourse theory into a substantive social-theoretical model. The idea is to determine whether the ambitious normative theory of democracy is plausible …
