Why All Clicks Are Not Created Equal: Consumer Information Search In The Web-Based Marketspace, Kuan-Pin Chiang Jan 2002

Why All Clicks Are Not Created Equal: Consumer Information Search In The Web-Based Marketspace, Kuan-Pin Chiang

Open Access Dissertations

With a few simple clicks, consumers can navigate the World Wide Web, move from site to site, access and examine vast amounts of information unconstrained by time and place which have traditionally restricted consumer behavior in the physical marketplace. At least, that is according to theory. Information search on the Internet should, therefore, increase since search costs are reduced. But empirical evidence seems to suggest otherwise. Why aren't consumers clicking for more information? Although the Internet reduces the cost of physical effort in moving from store to store, it may not reduce the cognitive cost of moving from site to …

Holistic Grading Of Essays Written By Native And Non-Native Writers By Instructors And Independent Raters: A Comparative Study, Margaret Mary Sheehan Jan 2002

Holistic Grading Of Essays Written By Native And Non-Native Writers By Instructors And Independent Raters: A Comparative Study, Margaret Mary Sheehan

Open Access Dissertations

This research examined the effects of the presence or absence of linguistic features identifying a writer as a non-native speaker of English on the evaluation of a student's text, and the ability of raters to distinguish between native and non-native writers based on their overall perception of a text. Classroom instructors, expert evaluators and independent raters graded eighty essays written by college freshmen during their first semester of composition instruction. The classroom instructors graded the essays according to the standards established by their department. The independent raters graded the same essays holistically using a fixed rubric with levels 1-5 that …

Corrosion Protection Of Aluminum Alloys Using A Chromate Conversion Coating, Hanan S. Mogawer Jan 2002

Corrosion Protection Of Aluminum Alloys Using A Chromate Conversion Coating, Hanan S. Mogawer

Open Access Dissertations

Corrosion protection of light metal alloys, including aluminum and its alloys, often involves the application of a chemical coating, such as a chromate. Chromates appear to be active coatings, which can repair themselves at defect sites. However, concerns over the environmental hazards that chromates present demand replacement by more environmentally friendly materials. Currently there are no entirely suitable replacements for the chromate coatings. More importantly, it is difficult to design such a replacement, as the mechanism by which chromates reduce corrosion is unclear. The research conducted provides information regarding the role chromates have in reducing corrosion of some aluminum alloys. …

The Study Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6pd) Gene Regulation In Hepg2 Cells By Glucose Induction And The Study Of G6pd Mrna Localization By Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (Fish)., Brian Nelson Griffith Jan 2002

The Study Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6pd) Gene Regulation In Hepg2 Cells By Glucose Induction And The Study Of G6pd Mrna Localization By Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (Fish)., Brian Nelson Griffith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

HepG2 cells were used as a model system to study the regulation of glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Regulation of hepatic G6PD expression involves changes in the amount of G6PD pre-mRNA in the nucleus in the absence of changes in the transcription rate of the gene. G6PD expression is increased in HepG2 cells incubated with increasing glucose concentrations. G6PD mRNA is increased 3- to 4- fold by incubation in 25 mM glucose, as compared to 0 mM glucose. To determine the cis-acting element involved in this regulation, HepG2 cells were stably transfected with G6PD genomic DNA composed of exons 7 through …

Cultural Diversity And The Police In The United States: Understanding Problems And Finding Solutions, Benjamin J. Goold, Karyn Hadfield Jan 2002

Cultural Diversity And The Police In The United States: Understanding Problems And Finding Solutions, Benjamin J. Goold, Karyn Hadfield

All Faculty Publications

For over 150 years, there has been a history of tension and conflict between the police and minority communities in the United States. In principle, the police exist to enforce the law and protect all citizens regardless of race or ethnic background, yet police departments across the country have been repeatedly accused of targeting and harassing racial minorities, and of failing to root out racist attitudes and practices within their ranks. Recent, high profile cases of beatings by police have only served to heighten concerns over the mistreatment of minorities by the police, resulting in widespread calls for major legal …

Deciding When Hate Is A Crime: The First Amendment, Police Detectives, And The Identification Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell Jan 2002

Deciding When Hate Is A Crime: The First Amendment, Police Detectives, And The Identification Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This Article adds to the debate a story of how hate crime law is enforced, based on the experiences of the police detectives who are required to enforce hate crime law. Part I of this Article provides a brief description of hate crime laws and argues that the police play an important role in the determination of how hate crime law is enforced and ultimately, whether defendants’ First Amendment rights will be respected. Part II describes critics’ concerns about defendants’ First Amendment rights and the narrow constitutional line that enforcers of hate crime law must walk between enforcing hate crime …

Part 1: Structure, Stability And Reactivity Of Small Biologically-Active Organosulfur Compounds. Part 2: Generation Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Enzymatic Reduction Of Chromium(Vi) And Arsenic(V) And Its Implications In Metal-Induced Carcinogenesis., Oluwarotimi Odunayo Olojo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some important organosulfur compounds (2-aminoethanethiolsulfuric acid, 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide and thionicotinamide) have been investigated by using UV-VIS, NMR, stopped-flow, and qualitative analysis. Results obtained showed that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules via successive addition of oxygen atoms. The oxidation of thionicotinamide, an important xenobiotic, gave different oxygenated products, depending on the oxidizing power of the oxidant used. The sulfinic acid of thionicotinamide is stable with mild oxidizing agents while stronger oxidants desulfurize the molecule to yield sulfate as observed with other organosulfur compounds studied. Mechanism of oxidation leading …

The Female Condom: Dynamics Of Use In Urban Zimbabwe, Horizons Program Jan 2002

The Female Condom: Dynamics Of Use In Urban Zimbabwe, Horizons Program

HIV and AIDS

In July 1997, Population Services International (PSI), at the request of the Zimbabwe National AIDS Coordination Programme, launched a social marketing program for the female condom in Zimbabwe. The campaign's intended audience was women in long-term relationships. To avoid the stigma associated with condoms and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, PSI marketed the female condom as a family planning product under the brand name Care™. Approximately one year after the start of the female condom social marketing campaign, the Horizons Program and PSI conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study of female condom users, male condom users, and nonusers of either …

Designing Hiv/Aids Intervention Studies: An Operations Research Handbook, Andrew A. Fisher, James R. Foreit, John E. Laing, John E. Stoeckel, John Townsend

HIV and AIDS

This handbook has several objectives and uses. First, it is designed to help HIV/AIDS researchers develop and write a detailed operations research proposal. An appropriate use of the handbook is as a resource in workshops or courses on research design and proposal development. Thus, the organization of the handbook follows that of a research proposal, starting with identifying, defining, and justifying a research problem, and ending with how to prepare a budget. Although the handbook is not an academic textbook on research methods, it does provide a review of many key concepts and important methods essential for conducting HIV/AIDS field …

Greater Involvement Of Plha In Ngo Service Delivery: Findings From A Four-Country Study, Horizons Program Jan 2002

Greater Involvement Of Plha In Ngo Service Delivery: Findings From A Four-Country Study, Horizons Program

HIV and AIDS

At the conclusion of the Paris AIDS Summit in 1994, 42 governments issued a declaration supporting the greater involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in policy formulation and service delivery. Despite growing recognition of its importance, there has been little research that examines PLHA involvement in the delivery of prevention, care, and support services in developing countries and its effects on PLHA, others affected by HIV/AIDS, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). To address this gap, the Horizons Program and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance conducted a study of PLHA involvement in NGOs in Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Maharashtra State, India, and Zambia …

It's A Wrap: Digital Video And Tutor Training, Joe Essid, Dona J. Hickey

English Faculty Publications

All tutors, no matter their level of experience, run into difficult moments with writers. Certainly, we have all met writers who are:

• angry at their professors • expecting only grammatical assistance • reluctant to make any changes • older than the tutor and not certain of the tutor’s expertise • hoping for a “fix” from a tutor who will do the writer’s work.

Skilled tutors can, of course, adapt to most situations and respond ethically to these and other typical “trouble spots.” The situation is very different for novice tutors. The problems outlined above, while common enough, may not …
