The effect of concept mapping on students' perceived understanding of science concepts was investigated Concept maps as a tool to assess understanding, to identify misconceptions, and to correct misconceptions were also studied. The participants in the study were three eighth graders, two girls and one boy. The students created two concept maps that were quantitatively analyzed based on the links, propositions, and cross-links for understanding and misconceptions. A questionnaire was used to find out if the students had misconceptions and to determine feelings on concept mapping and helping them to understand. Assessing Student Learning Of Content And Computer Skills In Instructional Technology, Mary L. Hallett Jan 2002

Assessing Student Learning Of Content And Computer Skills In Instructional Technology, Mary L. Hallett

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Computer-based technology has been implemented in schools throughout America with the goal of improving student learning and teaching practices, and preparing individuals for a highly technical world. However, due to lack of research and proper assessment, technology's impact on education is virtually unknown. The purpose of the study was to create an assessment tool that would measure student learning of content and technological skills. Three case studies of fourth-grade students were conducted while completing Internet and multimedia activities. Utilizing the qualitative methodologies of interviewing, field notes, journals, student work, and written artifacts, data was collected on how computer technology impacts …

Biodiversity Of Fungi In Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mounds, Jennifer A. Zettler, Thomas M. Mcinnis Jr., Craig R. Allen, Timothy P. Spira Jan 2002

Biodiversity Of Fungi In Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Mounds, Jennifer A. Zettler, Thomas M. Mcinnis Jr., Craig R. Allen, Timothy P. Spira

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, became established in North America more than 70 yr ago, and it currently occupies most of the southeastern United States. Fire ants change the physical and chemical components of soil, which likely infuence soil fungi in ant mounds. To determine the effects of fire ants on soil fungi, we sampled soil from fire ant mounds and the surrounding nonmound soil. In addition, we sampled soil from the nests of the native ant Aphaenogaster texana carolinensis Wheeler. We found that both fire ant mounds and native ant nests had greater fungal abundance but …

E-Pluribus Unum?: The Problem Of Anonymous Election-Related Communications On The Internet, Paul A. Werner, Iii

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Note discusses an aspect of this fundamental question in the context of one provision of the FECA. The FECA's identification requirement, section 441d, prohibits anonymous communications via mass media when any person makes an expenditure for the purpose of financing communications expressly advocating the election or defeat of clearly identified candidates. The mass media included are broadcast, print, direct mail, outdoor advertising facilities, and any other general public political advertising. Communications triggering this provision must contain clear information identifying who paid for and who authorized them. The statute delineates three possible required disclosures: (1) that the communication has been …

International Criminal Courts And Fair Trials: Difficulties And Prospects, Jacob Katz Cogan Jan 2002

International Criminal Courts And Fair Trials: Difficulties And Prospects, Jacob Katz Cogan

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

The question "Can international criminal courts provide defendants with fair trials?" is one that has barely been posed, let alone answered. The realm of international criminal justice is distinguished from domestic criminal justice not simply because accountability and sovereignty weigh heavier in this context, but also because of the absence of an effective counterweight to check these interests. One approach to the fair trial issue focuses on the rights delineated in the tribunals' statutes, rules of procedure and evidence, and case law. A second approach to the problem of fair trials asks, instead, whether these international courts have the independence …

Upper Cretaceous Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Arctic Archipelago And Northern Continental Margin, Canada, Pedro M. Tapia, David M. Harwood Jan 2002

Upper Cretaceous Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Arctic Archipelago And Northern Continental Margin, Canada, Pedro M. Tapia, David M. Harwood

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Strata in the Canadian Arctic contain diverse and moderately well-preserved Late Cretaceous siliceous microfossil assemblages. One-hundred-twelve samples were analyzed from a composite stratigraphic section (1094m-thick) of the Smoking Hills, Mason River and Kanguk formations. Four sections were examined: (1) Slidre Fjord on Ellesmere Island; (2) Hoodoo Dome on Ellef Ringnes Island; (3) Cape Nares on Eglinton Island; and (4) Horton River on the Anderson Plains, Northwest Territories. Two hundred- three diatom taxa were identified in forty-nine productive samples. Four Upper Cretaceous diatom zones are proposed for the Canadian Arctic based on the biostratigraphic distribution of diatoms: (i) the Upper Cenomanian …
