Biomineralization Of Poorly Crystalline Fe(Iii) Oxides By Dissimilatory Metal Reducing Bacteria (Dmrb), John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, James K. Fredrickson, Yuri A. Gorby, Steven C. Smith Jan 2002

Biomineralization Of Poorly Crystalline Fe(Iii) Oxides By Dissimilatory Metal Reducing Bacteria (Dmrb), John M. Zachara, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, James K. Fredrickson, Yuri A. Gorby, Steven C. Smith

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB) catalyze the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in anoxic soils, sediments, and groundwater. Two-line ferrihydrite is a bioavailable Fe(III) oxide form that is exploited by DMRB as a terminal electron acceptor. A wide variety of biomineralization products result from the interaction of DMRB with 2-line ferrihydrite. Here we describe the state of knowledge on the biotransformation of synthetic 2-line ferrihydrite by laboratory cultures of DMRB using select published data and new experimental results. A facultative DMRB is emphasized (Shewanella putrefaciens) upon which most of this work has been performed. Key factors controlling the identity of …

Influence Of Mn Oxides On The Reduction Of Uranium(Vi) By The Metal-Reducing Bacterium Shewanella Putrefaciens, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, David Kennedy, Chongxuan Liu, Martine Duff, Douglas Hunter, Alice Dohnalkova Jan 2002

Influence Of Mn Oxides On The Reduction Of Uranium(Vi) By The Metal-Reducing Bacterium Shewanella Putrefaciens, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara, David Kennedy, Chongxuan Liu, Martine Duff, Douglas Hunter, Alice Dohnalkova

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The potential for Mn oxides to modify the biogeochemical behavior of U during reduction by the subsurface bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32 was investigated using synthetic Mn(III/IV) oxides (pyrolusite [β-MnO2], bixbyite [Mn2O3] and K+-birnessite [K4Mn14O27 • 8H2O]). In the absence of bacteria, pyrolusite and bixbyite oxidized biogenic uraninite (UO2[s]) to soluble U(VI) species, with bixbyite being the most rapid oxidant. The Mn(III/IV) oxides lowered the bioreduction rate of U(VI) relative to rates in their absence or in the presence of gibbsite …

A Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene Required For Heterologous Fatty Acid Elongase Activity Encodes A Microsomal Β-Keto-Reductase, Frédéric Beaudoin, Ken Gable, Olga Sayanova, Teresa Dunn, Johnathan A. Napier Jan 2002

A Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene Required For Heterologous Fatty Acid Elongase Activity Encodes A Microsomal Β-Keto-Reductase, Frédéric Beaudoin, Ken Gable, Olga Sayanova, Teresa Dunn, Johnathan A. Napier

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

A number of Saccharomyces cerevisiae membranebound oxidoreductases were examined for potential roles in microsomal fatty acid elongation, by assaying heterologous elongating activities in individual deletion mutants. One yeast gene, YBR159w, was identified as being required for activity of both the Caenorhabditis elegans elongase PEA1 (F56H11.4) and the Arabidopsis thaliana elongase FAE1. Ybr159p shows some limited homology to human steroid dehydrogenases and is a member of the short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase superfamily. Disruption of YBR159w is not lethal, in contrast to previous reports, although the mutants are slow growing and display high temperature sensitivity. Both …

The Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Ybr159w Gene Encodes The 3-Ketoreductase Of The Microsomal Fatty Acid Elongase, Gongshe Han, Ken Gable, Sepp D. Kohlwein, Frédéric Beaudoin, Johnathan A. Napier, Teresa M. Dunn Jan 2002

The Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Ybr159w Gene Encodes The 3-Ketoreductase Of The Microsomal Fatty Acid Elongase, Gongshe Han, Ken Gable, Sepp D. Kohlwein, Frédéric Beaudoin, Johnathan A. Napier, Teresa M. Dunn

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The YBR159w gene encodes the major 3-ketoreductase activity of the elongase system of enzymes required for very long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) synthesis. Mutants lacking the YBR159w gene display many of the phenotypes that have previously been described for mutants with defects in fatty acid elongation. These phenotypes include reduced VLCFA synthesis, accumulation of high levels of dihydrosphingosine and phytosphingosine, and accumulation of medium-chain ceramides. In vitro elongation assays confirm that the ybr159Δ mutant is deficient in the reduction of the 3-ketoacyl intermediates of fatty acid elongation. The ybr159Δ mutant also displays reduced dehydration of the 3-OH acyl intermediates of fatty …

Review Of The Background And Application Of Triolein-Containing Semipermeable Membrane Devices In Aquatic Environmental Study, Yibing Lu, Zijian Wang, James Huckins

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

This paper briefly reviews research on passive in situ samplers for aquatic environments but focuses on the development and application of the triolein-containing semipermeable membrane device in aquatic environmental monitoring. Special attention is paid to the calibration of the devices, quality control issues, and its potential uses in environmental assessments of aquatic contaminants. Also, the suitability of the technique for incorporation with selected bioassays is examined.

Defining A Leader : Administration At The Secondary Level : A Reflective Essay, Amy Ann Hamilton Kangas Jan 2002

Defining A Leader : Administration At The Secondary Level : A Reflective Essay, Amy Ann Hamilton Kangas

Graduate Research Papers

To teach students and know that you are affecting their future and possibly the future of the world is a daunting fact. To choose to be an administrator further commits oneself to the lifelong challenge of learning, teaching and facilitating an educational opportunity that will benefit students. To be a school administrator is to make a courageous decision. To be effective as a school administrator requires a strong leader who is able to build consensus among teachers; seek input from the community; and promote the trends that may reach students who are in danger of slipping through the cracks.

In current extremely high density recording media design, the signal to noise ratio SNR is related to the number of magnetic grains N in a recording bit by
SNR = 10 logl0 N .................................... (1)
In earlier studies we have found that a metallurgical grain can act as a magnetic grain when grains are magnetically decoupled by a non-magnetic phase [1,2]. Alternatively, several metallurgical grains can be exchange-coupled together when they are small [3]. An ideal morphology is one in which the non-magnetic atoms are segregated at the grain boundaries forming the non-magnetic phase while keeping the grains closely …

Telephone Justice, Pandering, And Judges Who Speak Out Of School, Randall T. Shepard Jan 2002

Telephone Justice, Pandering, And Judges Who Speak Out Of School, Randall T. Shepard

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article addresses the growing influence of outside forces on the judiciary. The Article details four situations in which a judge may feel the pressure of outside forces: confirmation hearings, subsequent political pressure, election campaigns, and situations involving the media. It criticizes the actions taken by Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson in the Microsoft antitrust case, most notable the numerous public remarks made while the trial was still in progress. The author concludes that judges set the standards for the way law is practiced and must therefore ignore the external pressures and strive to be models of integrity and justice.

A Comparison Of Fatal School Shootings In Rural Communities, Scott T. Kidd, Cheryl L. Meyer Jan 2002

A Comparison Of Fatal School Shootings In Rural Communities, Scott T. Kidd, Cheryl L. Meyer

School of Professional Psychology Faculty Publications

Disturbing new patterns have marked the occurrence of recent lethal school violence where young offenders have targeted large groups of fellow students as their victims. The current study is an effort to understand this growing trend of youth violence. Based on analysis of several cases that occurred between 1996 and 1999, a profile of the offenders is suggested built on similarities and differences between cases that were researched. Data was collected from online databases and internet websites for various news organizations. Sources of data included reports from national, regional and local newspapers, newsmagazines, wire services, interview transcripts, and reports posted …

Begging The Court's Pardon: Justice Denied For The Poorest Of The Poor, Daniel M. Cohen Jan 2002

Begging The Court's Pardon: Justice Denied For The Poorest Of The Poor, Daniel M. Cohen

St. Thomas Law Review

Astonishing as it may seem, if Benjamin Franklin were alive today, and he sought to collect alms for the poor on Fort Lauderdale Beach, he would, by force of law, find himself summarily expelled from the area. If Mr. Franklin then returned, seeking thus to heed the call of his conscience to help the downtrodden and oppressed, the great statesman and Founding Father of the United States would find himself placed under arrest. For the City of Fort Lauderdale, with the imprimatur of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal, has deemed it Right and Good that soliciting a passerby for …

Environmental Federalism In The United States And The European Union: A Harmonic Convergence, Alfred R. Light Jan 2002

Environmental Federalism In The United States And The European Union: A Harmonic Convergence, Alfred R. Light

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1788, Benjamin Franklin wrote to some European friends just after the United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia, "I send you. . . the proposed new federal Constitution for these states [i]f it succeeds, I do not see why you might not in Europe [do the same] by forming a Federal Union and one grand republic of all the different states and kingdoms; by means of a like Convention, for we had many interests to reconcile." Here, in the twenty-first century, Americans still measure their system of federalism with reference to the same document to which Franklin referred. It …

The New Institutional Italian Organization: The Federalism - The Experience Of Other European States And The U.S. System, Nerio Marino

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1860 Italy turned into a nation, indeed one year later, on March, 17, the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed under the Savoy Royal Family. However the unity of Italy was completed only in 1866, with the annexation of Veneto and definitely in 1870 with the conquest of Rome. Since then the Boot (Italy), more than any other European country, have had all the premises to become a federal state.

Wood Thrush Movements And Habitat Use: Effects Of Forest Management For Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Jason Lang, Larkin A. Powell, David Krementz, Michael J. Conroy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We monitored adult and juvenile breeding-season movements and habitat use of radio-tagged Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) at the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, central Georgia, USA. We investigated the effects that management for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis), thinning and burning >30 year old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) habitat, had on Wood Thrushes, a ground-foraging and midstory-nesting species. Adult Wood Thrush pairs regularly moved long distances between nesting attempts (range 1 to 17,388 m). The only experimental effect we found on adult movements was a decrease in weekly emigration rates (AP) from thinned and burned compartments …
