Specularity In Late Nineteenth-Century French Literature And Art, Marguerite Libassi Aug 2002

Specularity In Late Nineteenth-Century French Literature And Art, Marguerite Libassi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the mid-to-late 1800s, French writers and artists resolved to shed their Romantic skins in favor of new self-conscious "husks"--to borrow Baudelaire's poetic term--that is to say: Naturalism, Realism, Impressionism and Symbolism. Some of the older reformers found themselves in an awkward, transitional stage contrary to the younger vanguardists who bore no allegiance to the past. The first group included Baudelaire, Flaubert, Courbet, Manet, Degas and Pissarro while the latter listed among its most successful members: Zola, Mallarmé, Huysmans, Morisot, Monet, Renoir and Cézanne. This thesis argues that specularity--a sort of mirror mimesis--was part of the fertile, artistic exchange between …

New Plane Wave Representation Of Point Sources, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang, W. C. Chew Aug 2002

New Plane Wave Representation Of Point Sources, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang, W. C. Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method to decompose the spherical wave of a 3D point source into plane waves is discussed. Using Cauchy's theorem, it represents spherical waves as the summation of surface-direction-wave integrals. Results show that only 6 directions waves needed storage. Thus, the method provides a good cost reduction for plane-wave related algorithms.

A Metadata Approach To Preservation Of Digital Resources: The University Of North Texas Libraries' Experience, Daniel Gelaw Alemneh, Samantha K. Hastings, Cathy Hartman

Faculty Publications

Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has entered into partnership agreements with federal and state agencies to ensure permanent storage and public access to a variety of government information sources. As digital resource preservation encompasses a wide variety of interrelated activities, the UNT Libraries are taking a phased approach to ensure the long-term access to its digital resources. Formulation of preservation policy and creation of preservation metadata for electronic files and digital collections are among the most important steps. This …

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

A study on the recreation and activity opportunities for the youth in Monteverde. In an open community meeting held Monday, July 1, 2002, members of the community in the Monteverde Zone (including Monteverde, Cerro Plano, Santa Elena, San Luis and Los Llanos), stressed that one of the major problems the community is facing is a lack of recreational activities for youth. They emphasized the fact that drugs and teenage pregnancies are an issue here in the Monteverde Zone, and it is their opinion that the lack of positive activities for youth has a direct correlation. The research team had been …

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

A preliminary investigation of the effects of the transformation on the community due to tourism. In recent years the economic structure of Costa Rica’s Monteverde zone (Santa Elena, Cerro Plano, Monteverde) has been transformed from one based on agriculture and dairy to one based on tourism. The goal of our project is to provide a preliminary investigation of the effects of this transformation on the community. Prior to beginning our research, we identified several possible effects of tourism on the area. These possible effects consisted of economic and cultural shifts, contamination of the water supply, decreased air quality, an increase …

A Web-Based High Performance Simulation System For Transport And Retention Of Dissolved Contaminants In Soils, Honghai Zeng Aug 2002

A Web-Based High Performance Simulation System For Transport And Retention Of Dissolved Contaminants In Soils, Honghai Zeng

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater, the major source of human drinking water, is susceptible to contamination from industrial and agricultural activities. This research develops a web-based simulation system of remote high performance computing model for contaminant transport and retention in soils. A three-dimensional advection-dispersion-reaction MRTM model, based on previous experimental and theoretical studies, is proposed to analyze the transport and retention of chemical contaminants in groundwater flowing through soils. Since three-dimensional experiments are difficult to implement and verify, this simulation system provides scientists an alternative to trace the contaminant movement in soils outside laboratories. The alternating direction implicit (ADI) algorithm is used in this …

A Device For Imposing Uniform, Cyclic Strain To Cells Growing On Implant Alloys, Larry Chad Winter Aug 2002

A Device For Imposing Uniform, Cyclic Strain To Cells Growing On Implant Alloys, Larry Chad Winter

Theses and Dissertations

Since bone tissues grow in intimate contact with implant surfaces in vivo, there is a need to investigate how bone cells respond to mechanical loads adjacent to implants under well characterized loading conditions that stimulate the bone-implant surface. Thus, the objective of this study was to demonstrate an effective means for applying known, uniform, cyclic strain to cells growing on implant materials in vitro. A cell culture strain plate device was developed based on the application of the four-point bending principle. The device uses a small electric motor to drive belts attached to shafts which turn a set of cams. …

Distribution And Morphology Of Bacteria And Their Byproducts In Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery Operations, Sarah Elizabeth Fratesi Aug 2002

Distribution And Morphology Of Bacteria And Their Byproducts In Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery Operations, Sarah Elizabeth Fratesi

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the occurrence of bacteria and their exopolysaccharide slime layer in microbial enhanced oil recovery experiments. A test of SEM preservation techniques showed that air drying and 10% glutaraldehyde fixation preserved the slime layer but distorted and flattened bacteria. Techniques with ethanol dehydration preserved the bacterial textures but fragmented the slime layer. In sandstones that had been plugged during microbial enhanced oil recovery experiments, bacteria are sparsely distributed. An irregular, confluent slime sheet covers grains and coats pore spaces and is responsible for permeability modification in microbial enhanced oil recovery. The development …

An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan Aug 2002

An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan

Theses and Dissertations

Unlike most other host-specific mycoplasmas, Mycoplasma gallinarum exists as a commensal with a host range including most poultry as well as some mammals. This property of M. gallinarum may reflect unique mechanisms for its colonization and persistence in hosts. Whereas M. gallinarum shows leucine and arginine aminopeptidase activity, the genes encoding the enzymes had not been cloned and characterized. We identified an aminopeptidase gene (APN) by oligonucleotide hybridization to a genomic library of M. gallinarum in lambda ZAPII bacteriophage. Nucleotide sequence analysis of overlapping phage clones identified a 1,362 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative leucine aminopeptidase gene. …

Photoresist Development On Sic And Its Use As An Etch Mask For Sic Plasma Etch, Ritwik Mishra

Theses and Dissertations

Photoresist is a light sensitive material whose physical and chemical properties change when exposed to light. Photoresist makes it possible to transfer the image of a circuit pattern directly onto a substrate. The first part of this work deals with developing a photo process using AZ 1518 and AZ P4330 positive resists on SiC substrate. The aim was to determine the optimal spin parameters, softbake time, and exposure time for these resists matching their thickness. AZ 1518 process was developed for a 1.76 um thickness and AZ P4330 for 4.3 um thickness. With the parameters obtained the resist had about …
