High-Resolution Physical Map For Chromosome 16q12.1-Q13, The Blau Syndrome Locus., Xiaoju Wang, Helena Kuivaniemi, Gina Bonavita, Charlene J Williams, Gerard Tromp Aug 2002

High-Resolution Physical Map For Chromosome 16q12.1-Q13, The Blau Syndrome Locus., Xiaoju Wang, Helena Kuivaniemi, Gina Bonavita, Charlene J Williams, Gerard Tromp

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The Blau syndrome (MIM 186580), an autosomal dominant granulomatous disease, was previously mapped to chromosome 16p12-q21. However, inconsistent physical maps of the region and consequently an unknown order of microsatellite markers, hampered us from further refining the genetic locus for the Blau syndrome. To address this problem, we constructed our own high-resolution physical map for the Blau susceptibility region. RESULTS: We generated a high-resolution physical map that provides more than 90% coverage of a refined Blau susceptibility region. The map consists of four contigs of sequence tagged site-based bacterial artificial chromosomes with a total of 124 bacterial artificial chromosomes, …

Petroleum Hydrocarbon Degrading Microbial Communities Of Arctic Ocean Sediment, Kathleen Ann Gannon Aug 2002

Petroleum Hydrocarbon Degrading Microbial Communities Of Arctic Ocean Sediment, Kathleen Ann Gannon

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Offshore oil development in Arctic Alaska is expanding. Since biodegradation is a major removal mechanism of petroleum hydrocarbons from the environment, baseline data on microorganisms present are important. I estimated microbial populations and their degradation activities in Arctic Ocean sediments, and examined how sediment affects phenanthrene bioavalability. Populations of hydrocarbon degraders were significantly higher in sediments from near Prudhoe Bay than near Barrow. However, microbial counts from Prudhoe Bay were similar to those measured in the 1970s suggesting that the difference was not due to oil development activities. Total microbial counts were higher than in more temperate regions. All sediments …

Predictors Of Success At A Rural Juvenile Offender Facility, Gunnar Sven Ebbesson Aug 2002

Predictors Of Success At A Rural Juvenile Offender Facility, Gunnar Sven Ebbesson

Psychology

Although risk factors contributing to failure in treatment of young offenders have been studied extensively, little is written about what effects success. This study on the latter takes advantage of data obtained at a local treatment facility. This study uses statistical strategies to compare 7 different variables from a set of archival data with the outcome variable, which is 'success in treatment'. The seven independent variables are ethnicity, age at entry to treatment, pre-release pass (PRP), days in treatment, FAS/FAE, sexual offender, and psychiatric diagnosis. This data has been accumulated by a clinician at the facility and offered to the …

Women, Alcohol Use Disorders, And Sexuality: An Exploration Of Beliefs, Patricia S. Moore Aug 2002

Women, Alcohol Use Disorders, And Sexuality: An Exploration Of Beliefs, Patricia S. Moore

Psychology

Extensive research has been conducted on issues of sexuality for women with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). These issues are relevant both to the development of and recovery from AUD. Little of this research has focused on the importance of women's beliefs about sexuality at the time of drinking and during recovery. This study sought to identify these beliefs and to determine their importance in the development of and recovery from AUD. A qualitative research design was used whereby interviews with four women in long-term recovery (3 or more years) were analyzed. It was found that, overall, beliefs about sexuality became …

The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor Aug 2002

The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor

Biological Sciences

Weight loss and ill thrift are common problems encountered in muskox calves raised in captivity. Varied diagnostic results suggest that there is immunosuppression possibly related to trace mineral intake. This experiment evaluates the influence of a single trace element, copper, on muskox calf health and development. Muskox calves consuming a diet containing 5 ppm Cu exhibited lower weight gains, reduced survivability, depleted lymphoid tissue, thinner aortic arches, more muscle wasting and an increased occurrence of diarrhea than a group consuming the same diet but receiving injectable Cu supplementation. This study demonstrates the importance of adequate copper in the diet ensuring …

Performance Considerations For Horiznontal [Sic] And Unconventional Wellbore Configurations, Mahesh Deshpande Aug 2002

Performance Considerations For Horiznontal [Sic] And Unconventional Wellbore Configurations, Mahesh Deshpande

Engineering

The goal of this study was to investigate the performance of horizontal and unconventional well configurations and formulate guidelines for selecting optimum configuration. The simulation model was validated by comparing the productivity of numerical model for a horizontal well with the analytical models. The productivity of horizontal, snake wells and fishbone wellbore configurations was studied by varying four parameters, vertical position of well in the payzone, permeability anisotropy, partial completion and well length. Effect of friction loss correlations on estimation of well productivity losses was also studied. The study concludes that the ratio vertical position of well, Zw to the …

Numerical Simulation Study To Evaluate Recovery Performance Of Miscible Displacement And Wag Process, Xingru Wu Aug 2002

Numerical Simulation Study To Evaluate Recovery Performance Of Miscible Displacement And Wag Process, Xingru Wu

Engineering

Several factors including gravity segregation, solvent types, injection methods, and production/injection well constraints are known to impact the performance of Water-Alternate-Gas (WAG) process and miscible displacement. This thesis studies well completions to optimize the miscible displacement and WAG processes through numerical simulation of a pattern model with stochastic permeability distribution. To study the impact of well placement and completions on miscible performance in heterogeneous media, we injected various solvents and examined the effect of gravity segregation, permeability distribution and anisotropy, horizontal well lengths, orientation of vertical and horizontal wells on oil recovery. Also, we conducted simulations with various WAG ratios …

A Parallel Implementation Of An Mpeg-2 Encoder Using Message-Passing, Jennifer Zenner Aug 2002

A Parallel Implementation Of An Mpeg-2 Encoder Using Message-Passing, Jennifer Zenner

Theses

The days of film are waning as digital cameras and digital video cameras are becoming commonplace. Uncompressed digital video can consume large amounts of space, making it cumbersome to store efficiently. A method of video compression was developed by the Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG), and is now an international standard with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This thesis deals with the MPEG-2 Video standard, ISO/IEC 13818-2 [2]. The goal of this thesis is to explore the applications of MPEG-2 encoding in a parallel processing paradigm. To achieve this, a sequential MPEG-2 software encoder was obtained from the MPEG …

Hiv Tat Protein Activates Endothelial Cells Through Nfκb And Map Kinase Pathways., Jason L. Henry Aug 2002

Hiv Tat Protein Activates Endothelial Cells Through Nfκb And Map Kinase Pathways., Jason L. Henry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

HIV infection has been shown to predispose patients to accelerated development of heart disease. One mechanism for this pathology may involve endothelial activation either by HIV itself or by its secreted proteins, gp120 (a viral envelope protein) and tat (a protein that upregulates transcription of viral genes). We have studied the effects of gp120 and tat on signaling and production of inflammatory cytokines by Human Pulmonary Artery Endothelial Cells (HPAEC). HPAEC were stimulated at varying time points with combinations of gp120, tat, and monokines (IL-1β and TNFα). Cell lysate fractions were analyzed for MAP Kinase activity and NFκB activation, and …

The Signaling Pathway Of Oxysterol Induced Apoptosis In Chinese Hamster Ovary (Cho)-K1 Cells., Lin Yang Aug 2002

The Signaling Pathway Of Oxysterol Induced Apoptosis In Chinese Hamster Ovary (Cho)-K1 Cells., Lin Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Apoptosis, a form of genetically programmed cell death, plays a key role in regulation of cellularity of the arterial wall. During atherogenesis, improper apoptosis may cause abnormalities of arterial morphogenesis, wall structural stability, and metabolisms. It has been well established that vascular cells undergo apoptosis after uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). Thus, an analysis of the signaling pathway of apoptotic induction by oxLDL is of value in understanding the development of atherosclerotic plaque. In order to elucidate the signaling pathway of apoptosis induced by oxLDL, we have used Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells treated with a potent oxysterol, 25-hydroxycholesterol …

The UIT program, which all undergraduate students must complete before graduation, consists of satisfying a computer literacy foundation requirement and a two course UIT-intensive requirement. The foundation requirement is satisfied by completing a two credit hour course or a challenge exam. Students then take two courses that have been designated as UIT-intensive. One of these courses must be completed in the major.

The study, which used a responsive evaluation methodology, involved generating a list of evaluation questions …

Models And Graphics In The Analysis Of Categorical Variables: The Case Of The Youth Tobacco Survey., Deborah Susan Hosler Aug 2002

Models And Graphics In The Analysis Of Categorical Variables: The Case Of The Youth Tobacco Survey., Deborah Susan Hosler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Youth Tobacco Surveys have been conducted in several states in the U.S. in recent years, in order to design policies with the goal of reducing tobacco use among young people. Some primary analysis of those surveys has been done, but few analyses include modeling, and the study of independence has been addressed, mainly, in the bivariate context.

In this work contemporary methods, which are of relative recent appearance in categorical data analysis, will be examined, including logistic and log-linear modeling as well as graphical displays and correspondence analysis. These methods will be applied to data from the 2000 Tennessee Youth …
