Business Method Patents And Their Limits: Justifications, History, And The Emergence Of A Claim Construction Jurisprudence, Nicholas A. Smith Oct 2002

Business Method Patents And Their Limits: Justifications, History, And The Emergence Of A Claim Construction Jurisprudence, Nicholas A. Smith

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Scholars, practitioners, and even popular media spilled much ink over business method patents in the late 1990s, eager to discuss the shift in jurisprudence that enabled patent holders to enforce business method patents for the first time. Since that initial period of excitement--during which businesses filed record numbers of applications for business method patents, and numerous articles tracing the doctrinal shift were published--commentators have written little on the topic. Various patent holders, however, have since litigated business method patent claims. During these first few years after judicial endorsement of business method patents, such litigation has focused on the scope of …

Response To My Readers, Albert Borgmann Oct 2002

Response To My Readers, Albert Borgmann

Philosophy Faculty Publications

I hope no one is disappointed when I say right at the start that I basically agree with my critics. Not all is irenic, of course, and in philosophy it should not be. What distinguishes the philosophical from the poetic or the narrative discourse is the expectation of questions and objections. Much as I appreciate Myron Tuman's generous remarks on the occasionally poetic quality of Holding On to Reality (henceforth Holding), I have always enjoyed the give and take of philosophical exchanges though I have tried, over the years, to be gentler in giving and stronger in taking. There are …

The Relationship Between Positive Adolescent Attitudes Toward Reading And Home Literary Environment, Kelly Partin, Cindy Gillespie Hendricks Oct 2002

The Relationship Between Positive Adolescent Attitudes Toward Reading And Home Literary Environment, Kelly Partin, Cindy Gillespie Hendricks

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

While factors known to positively affect attitudes toward reading have been investigated, the relationship between attitudes toward reading and home literary environments, particularly with older students, needs to be more fully explored. This investigation focused on the nature of the relationship between high school students' reading attitudes and the literary environment in which they were raised.
