The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen
The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
This study investigates if companies that actively use export information have higher export growth rates or greater satisfaction with export performance measures than non-users. Organizational communication structures relating to information flow to decision makers is investigated to provide further insight into the role of export information. The study is based upon the knowledge utilization theory which states company/user characteristics are as important to information utilization as the characteristics of the specific piece of information. Bivariate analysis does not indicate a direct relationship between information use and reported higher export growth rates over the past four years. However, there are indications …
Correlation Functions Near Modulated And Rough Surfaces, Andreas Hanke, Mehran Kardar
Correlation Functions Near Modulated And Rough Surfaces, Andreas Hanke, Mehran Kardar
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
In a system with long-ranged correlations, the behavior of correlation functions is sensitive to the presence of a boundary. We show that surface deformations strongly modify this behavior as compared to a flat surface. The modified near surface correlations can be measured by scattering probes. To determine these correlations, we develop a perturbative calculation in the deformations in height from a flat surface. Detailed results are given for a regularly patterned surface, as well as for a self-affinely rough surface with roughness exponent ζ. By combining this perturbative calculation in height deformations with the field-theoretic renormalization-group approach, we also estimate …

There are thousands of statistical reports proving that by next September we will be so computerized and digitized that we will not have to go to school or work anymore. Math, spelling, geography, shopping, banking-it's all in the computer and on the web. All that will be left to us is to eat pizza and watch DVDs. Well, maybe there aren' t thousands of reports, but there are a lot, like, maybe three. OK, so I didn't actually see any reports myself, but the guys who hang at Harvey's Hardware know these things.

The Quarterly's Fall 2001 issue published a Note reviewing our report, A Broken System: Error Rates in Capital Cases, 1973-1995. That Note has three inaccuracies that are so clear and frequently repeated, and are the result of such clear cite-checking lapses, that remedial steps are required. These matters do not involve differences of opinion, judgment, or interpretation between us and the Note's author. Matters of that sort are appropriately addressed in a response. All instead are misstatements of fact that result from the Quarterly's failure to fulfill its basic obligation to check the accuracy of verifiable factual statements it …

We welcome criticism by responsible scholars and readers, and the chance to address it in journals that enforce appropriate standards of accuracy and integrity. We have done just that in exchanges in Judicature and the Indiana Law Journal.
But the inaccuracies in Adam VanGrack's Note, and new problems with his present explanation, lead us to conclude that it is not useful to exchange views with him in the Washington University Law Quarterly. Beyond all is Mr. VanGrack's dismissal of matters serious enough to trigger an extraordinary instruction to explain himself in print, and to prompt him to rescind …

The Youngstown holding is widely admired. One reads with pride those passages in which the Supreme Court denies to a president with whom they are in considerable political sympathy the power to enlarge executive authority by militarizing the homeland. And yet one wonders, as we confront in the 21st century a lethal foreign enemy who has demonstrated the ability to infiltrate and assault the domestic environment, precisely what restraints ought to govern a presidential response to that enemy.
Academic Quality Improvement Project (Aqip) And Accreditation: When Assessment Is Not Optional, Jeffrey Gatten
Academic Quality Improvement Project (Aqip) And Accreditation: When Assessment Is Not Optional, Jeffrey Gatten
Librarian Publications & Presentations
A new university accreditation system in the U.S. is known as the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP), developed in 1999 by the North Central Association. AQIP is designed to offer an alternative to current re-accreditation procedures, engaging institutions in a continuous quality improvement process. Kent State University has been selected as one of thirteen initial institutions to participate. All academic units, including the libraries, are required to develop assessment plans that focus on student learning outcomes. Of particular challenge for the libraries is building meaningful assessments that demonstrate direct impacts on student learning.

What happens to adolescents once placed in the criminal justice system and the potential violations of human rights that ensue is the focus of this essay. The pace of change, the severity of the new laws, the potential for unintended negative outcomes, and the empirical reality of adult punishment of juvenile offenders creates new urgency to these questions. Unfortunately, there has been little analysis of the comparative effects of statutes and administrative laws that relocate juvenile offenders to the adult court, and there has been virtually no research on the efficacy, impact and consequences of sentencing juveniles as adults. There …

Draft Convention On Jurisdiction And Recognition Of Judgments In Intellectual Property Matters, Rochelle Cooper Dreyfuss, Jane C. Ginsburg
Faculty Scholarship
The proposed Hague Convention on Jurisdiction and Foreign Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters is currently drafted to cover most fields of private litigation, including intellectual property. However, as those following the Hague process are aware, the Convention has run into considerable difficulties. There is currently reason to be concerned that it may not be promulgated at all, or that if it is promulgated, that it will be reduced in scope and cover only select areas of litigation, likely not to include intellectual property. This proposal is meant to spur the intellectual property bar to consider whether it would be …

The geometrical structure of the sea anemone and sea pansies neuropeptide Pol-RFamide II Glu^{1}-Trp^{2}-Leu^{3}-Lys^{4}-Gly^{5}-Arg^{6}-Phe^{7}-NH_{2} was carried out by molecular mechanics (MM). The linkage bonds are characterised by the torsional angles \phi, \psi and \omega and the side groups characterised by the torsional angles \chi_{1}, \chi_{2}, \chi_{3},... subsequently. The energy-map for each monopeptide of the Pol-RFamide II was drawn in the range of -180° to 180° with increments of 20°. Conformation facilities for monopeptides were decided from these maps. These results were used in the analysis of the dipeptide Glu^{1}-Trp^{2}. Then, the Glu^{1}-Trp^{2}-Leu^{3} tripeptide was examined by using the calculated results …

In this study, polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized by cationic addition polymerization. The polymer was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size, magnetic susceptibility, and four-probe conductivity measurements. From the magnetic susceptibility measurements, it was found that the polymer was a bipolaron conducting mechanism. From the particle size measurements, the average particle size of PPy was determined to be 3.2 \mu m. Suspensions of this polymer were prepared in silicone oil, mineral oil, trioctyltrimellitate (TOTM), dioctylphthalate (DOP) and marlotherm-s in different concentrations (5-20%, m/m). The electrorheological (ER) properties of these suspensions were investigated under various d.c. electric field …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The electrochemical behavior of benzo[c]cinnoline and some of its bromo derivatives was studied. Two discrete 2-electron reduction waves in acidic and only one wave in basic media in ethyl alcohol-BR buffer system (l:5 v/v) were observed. A mechanism for the electrode reaction is proposed. Diffusion coefficients, formal potentials for and the derivatives, the number of electrons transferred were determined by using sampled current polarography, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronocoulometry and constant potential coulometry. Adsorption of the molecules on the surface of the mercury drop was analyzed and this phenomena was exploited to calculate the formal potentials and the diffusion coefficients of …

A National Survey Of Elementary Principals' Response To The Events Of September 11, 2001, Diane Mary Mccarty
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The events of September 11, 2001, will be forever etched in the minds of citizens of the United States. Because students enrolled in the nation's elementary schools compose a significant segment of the population affected by these watershed events, this study investigated the responses of elementary school principals to the terrorist events of September 11. Specifically, this study sought to determine the degree to which elementary principals perceived their school's crisis management plan supported their leadership on September 11, 2001, and in the days and weeks that followed, and the degree to which elementary principals perceived these actions were connected …

The Book As Social Catalyst And Self Portrait, Eric Dahlberg
Theses
The main objective in creating this body of work was to emphasize the importance of personal growth through investigation and subsequent discovery. People have forgotten the spirit of adventure and investigation that was prevalent in the past. They have lost the reverence for education as a personal activity. By using the book as a symbol of knowledge and tool for personal development, I hope to test the viewers' attitudes, and emphasize the importance of educational investigation. My goals in creating this work were multifaceted; partly societal and partly personal. Like many artists, I believe that the work I create serves …

Trichodesmium spp. fix atmospheric N2 and so an element other than N limits production by these species in the oligotrophic ocean. Because dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) is in short supply in many marine systems, it has been hypothesized that P is a growth-limiting nutrient for these species in nature. However, Trichodesmium is capable of hydrolyzing dissolved organic P (DOP) compounds and the inorganic products from hydrolysis may provide an additional source of P for growth. We investigated P dynamics and alkaline phosphatase activity in cultures and natural populations of Trichodesmium from the Atlantic Ocean and the north coast of …

This article initially presents proposed definitions for the expression Corporate Neoliberal Globalization or neoliberal globalization. Next it discusses the main problems and impacts of the neoliberal globalization identified by social movements and intelectuals who lay out alternatives to the global neoliberal model, known as anti-globalization movement, “globalização from below” or “grassroots” globalization. These social movements have often organized themselves as global networks of social movements. To account for the appearance of such networks, the article reviews arguments put forth by scholars of the structures and dynamics of social networks. The article concludes with suggestions for elements of an alternative program …

The Latino Population has grown dramatically in Rhode Island in the last two decades. This has been particularly the case in Central Falls and Providence where Latinos make up 48% and 30% of the population, respectively. This influx has created a shift in the racial/ethnic make up of these cities and in the cultural background of large sectors of the residents.
The arrival of large numbers of persons who do not speak English and who are not familiar with the structure and practice of public services would, under any circumstance, present a challenge. But the fact that they are recent …

Six species of phytoplankton, representing 6 major phylogenetic groups (2 oceanic species: a cyanobacteria, Synechococcus sp., and a coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi; and 4 coastal species: a prasinophyte, Tetraselmis sp., the green algae Dunaliella tertiolecta, the diatom Skeletonema costatum and a dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae) were tested for their ability to reduce iodate to iodide in batch cultures. They all did so to varying degrees. Thus, the reduction of iodate to iodide by phytoplankton may be a general phenomenon in the marine environment. At ambient concentrations of iodate, the rates of depletion of iodate and appearance of …

Developing CPU architecture is a very complicated, iterative process that requires significant time and money investments. The motivation for this work is to find ways to decreases the amount of time and money needed for the development of hardware architectures. The main problem is that it is very difficult to determine the performance of the architecture, since it is impossible to take any performance measurements untill upon completion of the development process. Consecutively, it is impossible to improve the performance of the product or to predict the influence of different parts of the architecture on the architecture's overall performance. Another …
