Application Of A Rational Model In Gis For Flood Risk Assessment In Accra, Ghana Jan 2002

Application Of A Rational Model In Gis For Flood Risk Assessment In Accra, Ghana

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Accra has been experiencing periodic flooding that affect properties and lives. The government seeing the dangers involved has commissioned institutions such as Ministry of Works and Housing, Town and Country Planning and City Engineers to identify flood risk zones and adapt measures that will help reduce flood damages. These institutions identify flood risk zones using conventional methods such as watermarks on buildings and reported cases in the news media. Works carried out by these agencies were not able to give details about potential areas that are likely to experience this extreme event. Hence there was the need to find a …

Controlling Toxic Harms: The Struggle Over Dioxin Contamination In The Pulp And Paper Industry, William Boyd Jan 2002

Controlling Toxic Harms: The Struggle Over Dioxin Contamination In The Pulp And Paper Industry, William Boyd

Publications

This essay addresses the challenges of controlling toxic harms through an intensive case study of efforts to regulate and remedy dioxin contamination in the U.S. pulp and paper industry. By focusing on the struggle to control a specific toxic harm in a specific industrial sector, the essay explores the politicized nature of toxic harms in the United States and, in the process, highlights the considerable shortcomings of existing legal frameworks and institutions for dealing with problems of such scope and complexity. In doing so, the essay raises a host of normative issues regarding current institutional arrangements and the appropriate strategy …

The Internationalization Of Legal Relations, Roger P. Alford Jan 2002

The Internationalization Of Legal Relations, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

What exactly does it mean to say that "legal relations" are becoming "internationalized"? For me, the concept is in large measure a vertical question: the degree to which international law is affecting (some might say encroaching on) traditional domestic law, particularly state law. This is particularly so with treaty law. In the United States at least, internationalization might be thought of as simply another arm of federalism, with Congress stipulating that certain sales of goods will be governed by international law, not the Uniform Commercial Code. Or that a certain category of child adoptions will be governed by federal treaty …

Searching For The Hero's Code: Questioning (White) Hero Formation In Contemporary American Film, Amanda D. Mckay Jan 2002

Searching For The Hero's Code: Questioning (White) Hero Formation In Contemporary American Film, Amanda D. Mckay

Masters Theses

The desire for heroism never wavers in the imaginations of the movie-going public. When we go to the movies, we long to see a strong character, poised to save the world (tights and cape optional, of course). However, we rarely question what the hero looks like. Hollywood perpetuates an archaic form of heroism because that is what the audience has formed long ago in their collective imagination. Much of American culture is generated by the desire to see self-starters making it in the direst of conditions.

With such a narrow construction of heroism, Hollywood has become void of equal representation …

Calvin Klein: Semiotic Phenomenology, Stephanie L. Crase-Moritz Jan 2002

Calvin Klein: Semiotic Phenomenology, Stephanie L. Crase-Moritz

Masters Theses

This study examined print advertising as a visual communication method by focusing on five of Calvin Klein's jeans advertisements and the themes that are expressed to determine what realities or social meanings Calvin Klein's jeans advertisements constructed and/or reflected. To uncover the themes within Klein's advertisements, the following three-methods were applied: Content Analysis, Informal Focus Group and Semiotic Phenomenology. Together the three-methods, based upon data collected from fourteen males and females aged 13-18, 19-21, 22-24 and 28 years old or above, identified fifteen underlying themes containing stereotypes, potentially dangerous realities and evidence showing our desensitization to controversy and shocking images …

American Kitsch: Dreams Of Vegas And Apollo Beyond Aporias, Daniel Gerling Jan 2002

American Kitsch: Dreams Of Vegas And Apollo Beyond Aporias, Daniel Gerling

Masters Theses

Aside from a recently published compendium of happy stories by Dan Rather and a few real estate agencies in Florida, the American Dream has been considered dead. The most common poison deemed responsible for this death has been, not the lack of success, but, the "kitschiness" of the reward. Postwar novels such as Henry Miller's The Air-Conditioned Nightmare and Edward Albee's play The American Dream declared that the Dream was no longer genuine and, therefore, no longer functional or valid.

Horatio Alger's blueprint for American prosperity began to lose its momentum to a generation of skeptics who rejected the idea …

Framing The War: Government Strategies Used During The Kosovo Conflict, Jocelyn Tipton Jan 2002

Framing The War: Government Strategies Used During The Kosovo Conflict, Jocelyn Tipton

Masters Theses

NATO's success in Kosovo ultimately depended upon each member's ability to carefully balance national interest and opposing viewpoints against international pressures from the Alliance. In reconciling these factors, each country created framing strategies designed to garner public support for its involvement in the military operations. Indigenous public support was integral to each country's participation in these efforts and in NATO's ability to maintain a sustained campaign.

This thesis focuses specifically on the strategies used by the government leaders in the United States, Italy and Germany, to influence public opinion and gain national support for military involvement during NATO's operations in …

Making Friends To Last A Lifetime: An Ethnographic Study Of Parasocial Relationships And Soap Opera Characters, Emmalee Elizabeth Haight Pryor Jan 2002

Making Friends To Last A Lifetime: An Ethnographic Study Of Parasocial Relationships And Soap Opera Characters, Emmalee Elizabeth Haight Pryor

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to build theory about parasocial relationships and to examine what affect, if any, religion had on parasocial relationships. Using qualitative methods, the researcher watched the show three times with five women followed by an in-depth interview. The women chosen were LDS stay-at-home moms who had watched a soap opera for at least a year.
From this data came several surprising findings about religion and soap opera viewing. The women said they did not feel guilty about the content of the shows, rather the time required to watch. This guilt was alleviated by structuring their …

Information On The Assembly Line : A Review Of Information Design And Its Implications For Technical Communicators, Jason Nichols Jan 2002

Information On The Assembly Line : A Review Of Information Design And Its Implications For Technical Communicators, Jason Nichols

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Technological advances have made endless amounts of information on nearly every subject easily accessible, while at the same time fostering an economic climate conducive to international trade and partnerships. The challenge for companies then becomes one of figuring out how best to manage and use this mass of information, a task complicated by the increasingly global nature of business that requires products to be tailored to more specialized user groups in a wider array of formats and in different languages. Hence the emergence of information design, a field that technical communicators would do well to associate themselves with. Information design …

The Recording Industry, Minimum Advertised Pricing Policies And Non-Price Vertical Restraints Of Trade, M. Courtney Mccormick Jan 2002

The Recording Industry, Minimum Advertised Pricing Policies And Non-Price Vertical Restraints Of Trade, M. Courtney Mccormick

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Note argues that the recording industry's cooperative advertising programs do not run afoul of federal antitrust laws and, in fact, promote interbrand competition. It examines the implications of the cooperative advertising programs adopted by record companies in light of current federal antitrust law. Contrary to claims made by the FTC, the recording industry's actions can withstand antitrust scrutiny because Minimum Advertised Pricing ("MAP") policies serve pro-competitive business purposes. As will be discussed in further detail below, the recording industry has a legitimate interest in pursuing policies that help traditional music retailers stay in business in the face of crippling …

Emerging Issues In Sports Law: Symposium Transcript, Steve Underwood, Christopher Whitson

First we manage our litigation and clients. And we have a wide range of claims and suits to take care of. There are league-wide suits. There are labor arbitrations. There are player suits, from time-to-time. And you know the Corey Stringer case that's been filed in Minnesota, for example. We had a somewhat similar experience a few years ago that ended up as a ... cert. denied case of the United States Supreme Court, Smith v. Houston Oilers, a 1996 Fifth Circuit case .... We have a lot of workers' comp problems in our business. Our workcomp expense this year …

Filmmakers Beware: Protecting Profits Through International Licensing Agreements, Harris E. Tulchin Jan 2002

Filmmakers Beware: Protecting Profits Through International Licensing Agreements, Harris E. Tulchin

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The discussion that follows provides a description of the typical license terms and a more in-depth treatment of three areas of primary importance to the agreement: (1) release requirements; (2) licensed rights terms; and (3) payment obligations. The agreement usually begins with a short description of the particular motion picture licensed, the title, and the key creative elements such as its stars, director, writer, and producer. It states the country or territory to which the motion picture is licensed. The agreement will generally provide for an overall term of a number of years from the availability of certain delivery materials, …

Privacy, Eh! The Impact Of Canada's Personal Information Protection And Electronic Documents Act On Transnational Business, Juliana M. Spaeth, Mark J. Plotkin, Sandra C. Sheets

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In 2002, the requirements imposed by PIPEDA will extend to encompass all personal health information. PIPEDA will ultimately extend to the collection, use, or disclosure of all personal information in the course of any commercial activity within a province in 2004. This change in Canadian law carries significant consequences for the general business practices of American companies that conduct, or may conduct, business with Canadians. It is therefore crucial for lawyers with clients collecting personal data on- and offline to familiarize themselves with its requirements in order to counsel clients effectively about their current and future obligations under this privacy …
