The Effect Of Toxic Microcystis Aeruginosa On Four Different Populations Of Daphnia, Melanie L. Blanchette, James F. Haney Jan 2002

The Effect Of Toxic Microcystis Aeruginosa On Four Different Populations Of Daphnia, Melanie L. Blanchette, James F. Haney

Center for Freshwater Biology

Cyanobacteria reduce the fitness of many Daphnia species, and blooms in eutrophic lakes may place strong selective pressure upon these primary consumers. This study examines the ability of daphnids to resist the deleterious effects of toxic Microcystis and determine if this resistance is related to the trophic conditions of their native lakes. Three populations of Daphnia pulex/pulicaria were examined; D. pulicaria from eutrophic Klamath Lake in Oregon, D. pulex from eutrophic Old Durham Reservoir in New Hampshire, and D. pulicaria from oligotrophic Russell Pond in New Hampshire. D. carinata from meso-oligotrophic Lake Rotoaira in New Zealand was used as a …

The Ethical Foundations Of American Judicial Independence, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2002

The Ethical Foundations Of American Judicial Independence, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Most lawyers and many citizens could recall the federal constitutional basis for judicial independence. Article III of the United States Constitution mandates that positions be filled through appointment by the President and confirmation by the Senate. That formidable selection process almost invariably ensures that federal judges are intelligent, well educated, and professionally experienced. Those qualities are conducive to judicial independence.

Additionally, federal judges enjoy the following constitutional guarantees: life tenure during good behavior, non-reducible compensation, and removal only through impeachment. These protections free federal judges from the need to behave in politically advantageous ways in order to keep their positions. …

Diffraction Limited 3d Cell Volume Derivation For Scattering Data Analysis, Monica Barbu-Mcinnis Jan 2002

Diffraction Limited 3d Cell Volume Derivation For Scattering Data Analysis, Monica Barbu-Mcinnis

Theses

Ultrasound speckle carries information about the interrogated scattering microstructure. To effectively analyze this scattering microstructure using a monochromatic signal, a separate transmit and receive crossbeam geometry is implemented. The complex echo signal is represented as a superposition of signals due to all scatterers within an effective resolution cell volume, VE, in the crossbeam geometry. An estimate of such an effective resolution cell volume is required in order to remove system effects when attempting to characterize material using moment analysis. The effective resolution cell volume, VE is defined in terms of the overlapping diffraction beam patterns for the transmit-receive transducers. Given …

The Synthesis Of Bromoethoxy And Vinylbenzyloxy Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Michael Joseph Matuszewski

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Multiphoton-absorption processes have recently attracted growing interest because of the potential impact on a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from data storage to photodynamic therapy. From the materials standpoint, particular interest is centered in designing chromophores that exhibit a large two-photon cross-section. The current research is focused on establishing synthetic routes that lead to the formation of derivatives of N,N-diphenyl-(7-benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine which contain meta functionalization. A bromoethoxy functionalized chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(2-bromoethoxy)phenyl)-7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren- 2-ylamine , was synthesized and used as a polymer pendent while a vinylbenzyloxy chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-7- (benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine, was synthesized as a hydrosilation substrate. A compound containing three chromophores, 1,3,5-tris(3-(N-phenyl- 4-(7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2- ylanilino)phenoxymethyl)benzene, has …

Study Of The Performance Of Acoustic Barriers For Indiana Toll Roads, Sanghoon Suh, Luc Mongeau, J. Stuart Bolton

JTRP Technical Reports

The purpose of this study was to optimize the geometry and the acoustic properties of sound barriers for traffic noise applications. The approach consisted of developing and validating boundary element predictive models, which were subsequently exercised in order to refine the barrier characteristic and determine optimized configurations. The simple geometry of a circular disk was chosen to validate the boundary element model in the first part of this work. Experiments were performed in an anechoic chamber to validate the numerical model. Complex barrier geometries were then investigated to study the effects of geometry on sound barrier performance. Boundary element models …

JTRP Technical Reports

This study develops an Internet-based remote on-line traffic control architecture for route guidance in large-scale traffic systems equipped with advanced information systems and sensors. It also proposes to use the Beowulf Cluster paradigm as an economical, flexible, and customizable computing architecture to generate supercomputing capabilities within the control architecture. The Beowulf Cluster provides the enabling environment to execute and coordinate the activities of the various modules that address real-time network route guidance, data transmission, calibration and fault tolerance. In the context of large-scale traffic systems, a Beowulf Cluster can be configured in centralized as well as decentralized on-line control architectures …

Putting Black Kids Into A Trick Bag: Anatomizing The Inner-City Public School Reform, Wilbur C. Rich

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Part I of this Article discusses the history of Brown, and the legal and political barriers that prevented the nation from fulfilling Brown's promise. Part II, will examine the phenomenon of White flight, which resulted from the efforts to implement the court-ordered desegregation of public schools. The political and economic effects of White flight on school reform efforts will also be examined. Part III will provide the reader with possible explanations for why school desegregation failed. The author will argue that the unexpected complexity of the task of desegregation, the lack of a unified direction among the judiciary, and …

Christian Identity: An American Heresy, David Ostendorf Jan 2002

Christian Identity: An American Heresy, David Ostendorf

Journal of Hate Studies

Christian Identity is a belief system so strange, indeed bizarre, that most Americans who know anything about it dismiss it outright and relegate those who believe it to the quaint and quirky fringes of the nation’s religious subcultures.

How seriously, for example, can one take the notion that God created Adam as a white man and that other races are sub-human? Or the belief that the lost tribes of Israel traversed Europe, landed in Great Britain, and crossed the Atlantic to inherit—as white Christian racialists—the promises of God? Or that Jesus came only to reach out to and save this …

Video Indexing And Retrieval Techniques Using Novel Approaches To Video Segmentation, Characterization, And Similarity Matching, Waleed Ezzat Farag

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Multimedia applications are rapidly spread at an ever-increasing rate introducing a number of challenging problems at the hands of the research community, The most significant and influential problem, among them, is the effective access to stored data. In spite of the popularity of keyword-based search technique in alphanumeric databases, it is inadequate for use with multimedia data due to their unstructured nature. On the other hand, a number of content-based access techniques have been developed in the context of image indexing and retrieval; meanwhile video retrieval systems start to gain wide attention, This work proposes a number of techniques constituting …

Collapse Above The World's Largest Potash Mine (Ural, Russia), Vjacheslav Andrejchuk Jan 2002

Collapse Above The World's Largest Potash Mine (Ural, Russia), Vjacheslav Andrejchuk

International Journal of Speleology

This paper reports the results of the study of a huge collapse that occurred in June 1986 within the area of the 3rd Berezniki potash mine (the Verkhnekamsky potash deposit, Ural). Processes that took place between the first appearance of a water inflow through the mine roof and the eventual collapse are reconstructed in detail. The origin and development of a cavity that induced the collapse are revealed. Two factors played a major role in the formation of the collapse: the presence of a tectonic fold/rupture zone with in both the salt sequence and the overburden (the zone of crush …

Lawyers And The Practice Of Workplace Equity, Susan Sturm Jan 2002

Lawyers And The Practice Of Workplace Equity, Susan Sturm

Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers involved in the pursuit of workplace equity are difficult to pigeon-hole. Of course, the practice of many employment lawyers conforms to conventional understandings of lawyers' roles. These lawyers litigate cases on behalf of management or employees, advise clients about their legal rights and obligations, and define their mission as avoiding liability or winning battles in court. But innovators have crafted interesting and dynamic roles that transcend the traditional paradigm. These innovators connect law, as it is traditionally understood, to the resolution of the underlying problems that create and maintain workplace inequity. Civil rights lawyers working in both public and private …

On Justice And War: Contradictions In The Proposed Military Tribunals, George P. Fletcher Jan 2002

On Justice And War: Contradictions In The Proposed Military Tribunals, George P. Fletcher

Faculty Scholarship

The autumn of our anguish has passed, and we are still confused about how to describe the use of military force in Afghanistan. We are torn between using the language of justice and the language of war. Is this an attack by private individuals, a case of a single terrorist writ large? If the mass killings of September 11 are the crimes of individuals – Islamic fundamentalist versions of Timothy McVeigh – then we can think about arresting them and bringing them to "justice." The mantra of the Bush team, "bringing justice to them and them to justice," has seeped …
