Kinematic data associated with both Laramide‐age and ‐style and Rio Grande rift‐related structures show that the latest Cretaceous to Neogene interaction between the Colorado Plateau and the North American craton was dominantly coupled with a component of dextral shear. Consistent with earlier studies, minor‐fault data in this study yielded results of varied kinematics. Inverted to a common northeast‐oriented hemisphere, the mean trend of kinematic shortening associated with Laramide‐age structures is 056∘±6" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; line-height: normal; word-spacing: normal; overflow-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; padding: 0px …

Y2k Serendipity: Benefits And Spinoffs, Roy Gwen Taunton

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of the researcher this study was to determine what, if any, unexpected benefits, spin-offs, and other "serendipitous" events occurred as a result of the year 2000 remediation process undertaken by businesses, industry, and other organizations. This was measured through the use of an online survey instrument comprised of a series of questions designed to measure and discover those benefits. The survey was sent to approximately 50 different businesses/organizations during the pilot stage of this study and 250 during the main stage of this study. These businesses/organizations were randomly selected from the sampling frame using random sampling techniques. …

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky Jan 2002

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

The question of how much to trim or which weighting constant to use are practical considerations in applying robust methods such as trimmed means (L-estimators) and Huber statistics (M-estimators). An index of location relative efficiency (LRE), which is a ratio of the narrowness of resulting confidence intervals, was applied to various trimmed means and Huber M-estimators calculated on seven representative data sets from applied education and psychology research. On the basis of LREs, lightly trimmed means were found to be more efficient than heavily trimmed means, but Huber M-estimators systematically produced narrower confidence intervals. The weighting constant of Ψ = …

Understanding the way regional landscapes operate, evolve, and change is a key area of research for ecosystem science. It is also essential to support the "placebased" management approach being advocated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other management agencies. We developed a spatially explicit, process-based model of the 2352 km2 Patuxent River watershed in Maryland to integrate data and knowledge over several spatial, temporal, and complexity scales, and to serve as an aid to regional management. In particular, the model addresses the effects of both the magnitude and spatial patterns of human settlements and agricultural practices on hydrology, plant …

A Study Of A Multi-Century Coral Stable Isotope Record From Rarotonga, Southwest Subtropical Pacific, For The Period 1726–1997, Lei Ren Jan 2002

A Study Of A Multi-Century Coral Stable Isotope Record From Rarotonga, Southwest Subtropical Pacific, For The Period 1726–1997, Lei Ren

Geology Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a 271-year (1726–1997) subseasonal oxygen and carbon isotopes (δ18O and δ13 C) records from a coral colony of porites lobata at Rarotonga (21.5°S, 159.5°W) in the southwest subtropical Pacific. A new method is introduced whereby the effects of sea surface temperature (SST) can be separated from those of seawater δ18O composition (δ18 Osw) on coral δ18O by using the coupled coral Sr/Ca and δ18O. The reconstructed δ 18Osw at Rarotonga using this method shows that it contributes significantly to the annual changes of coral δ18O for the period 1726–1997. While changes of δ18O, account for ∼39% of …

Field Relations, Structural Geology, And Geochemistry Of The Jonestown Volcanic Field, Lebanon County, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Tristan J. Ashcroft

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Jonestown Volcanic Field is a five kilometer by fifteen kilometer area of volcanic and hypabyssal rocks, basalt and diabase, located in southeastern Pennsylvania. These igneous rocks presently occur within an allochthonous belt of Ordovician deep water sedimentary rocks and Taconic flysch rocks known collectively as the Hamburg Klippe. Detailed field mapping during this project has revealed that the contacts between the igneous rocks and the flysch are not conformable. The volcanic rocks are associated with the Ordovician limestone that is adjacent to these volcanics. This limestone also is not conformable to the Hamburg Klippe sediments, rather it shares outcrop …

The Use Of A Synthetic Binary Solid Solution To Model Igneous Textural Evolution, Elizabeth Scott Jan 2002

The Use Of A Synthetic Binary Solid Solution To Model Igneous Textural Evolution, Elizabeth Scott

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Crystallization experiments using a synthetic igneous analog have shown that grain boundary migration can take place in melt-present environments (Means and Park, 1994). In order to evaluate the importance of metamorphic processes during the textural evolution of a crystal mush, microstructural evidence is needed to link them with final igneous textures. In natural magmatic systems, plagioclase may provide a microstructural link; plagioclase solid solution enables the process of chemical zoning and preserves a record of crystal morphology (and chemistry) during growth. If metamorphic processes are common, they should affect the zoning patterns of plagioclase crystals.

Host Finding And Recognition By Papilio Polyxenes (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae): The Effects Of Three Host Cues And Of Host-Plant Experience On Oviposition Behavior, Cheryl Ann Heinz '89

Doctoral Dissertations

Herbivorous insects are rarely able to eat all kinds of available plant material. The majority of phytophagous insects are oligophagous, feeding on a variety of host plants that are botanically and/or chemically related (Strong, et al. 1984; Jermy, et al. 1990; Bemays and Chapman 1994). This provides these insects the flexibility to exploit a variety of plant species; however, even closely-related plants can differ in such phenotypic characters as growth form, leaf shape, and chemistry. How then can we account for the fidelity of oligophagous insects for a particular set of plants growing in complex vegetation? Clearly, host-finding responses to …

Induction Of Myocarditis And Valvuluitis In Lewis Rats By Different Epitopes Of Cardiac Myosin And Its Implications In Rheumatic Carditis, Jeffrey E. Galvin, Mark E. Hemric, Stanley D. Konsanke, Stephen M. Factor, Anthony Quinn, Madeleine W. Cunningham

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Immune responses against cardiac myosin and group A streptococcal M protein have been implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatic heart disease. Although cardiac myosin is known to produce myocarditis in susceptible animals, it has never been investigated for its role in production of valvular heart disease, the most serious sequelae of group A streptococcal infection in acute rheumatic fever. In our study, cardiac myosin induced valvulitis in the Lewis rat, and epitopes responsible for production of valvulitis were located in the rod region. Human and rat cardiac myosins induced severe myocarditis in the Lewis rats as expected. A purified S2 …

Valuations And Filtrations, Edward Mosteig Jan 2002

Valuations And Filtrations, Edward Mosteig

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The classical theory of Gröbner bases, as developed by Bruno Buchberger, can be expanded to utilize objects more general than term orders. Each term order on the polynomial ring k[x] produces a filtration of k[x] and a valuation ring of the rational function field k(x). The algorithms developed by Buchberger can be performed by using directly the induced valuation or filtration in place of the term order. There are many valuations and filtrations that are suitable for this general computational framework that are not derived from term orders, even after a change of variables. Here we study how to translate …

An Effective Version Of Belyi's Theorem, Lily S. Khadjavi Jan 2002

An Effective Version Of Belyi's Theorem, Lily S. Khadjavi

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We compute bounds on covering maps that arise in Belyi's Theorem. In particular, we construct a library of height properties and then apply it to algorithms that produce Belyi maps. Such maps are used to give coverings from algebraic curves to the projective line ramified over at most three points. The computations here give upper bounds on the degree and coefficients of polynomials and rational functions over the rationals that send a given set of algebraic numbers to the set {0,1,∞} with the additional property that the only critical values are also contained in {0,1,∞}.

Pyrite Deformation Textures In The Deposits Of The Küre Mining District (Kastamonu-Turkey), İlkay Kuşcu, Ayhan Erler

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Küre volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits lie within the Kastamonu province in the western part of the Pontide tectonic belt of Turkey, and are hosted by ophiolite-related pre-Liassic basaltic sequences. Mineralogical studies of the pyritic massive sulfide deposits of the Küre mining district have shown that the sulfide assemblages, particularly pyrite, have undergone a history of deformation and metamorphism. The Küre volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits show a range of macroscopic and microscopic textures, which are also observed in metamorphosed VMS deposits elsewhere. These textures are cataclastic, annealing and fracture-filling textures which developed in two successive stages; cataclastic texture predominated during …

Cpl: A Language For Real-Time Distributed Object Programming, Erhan Saridoğan, Nadi̇a Erdoğan Jan 2002

Cpl: A Language For Real-Time Distributed Object Programming, Erhan Saridoğan, Nadi̇a Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

As processing and time requirements of computer systems increase over the borders of single processor architectures, it is becoming more and more attractive to use distributed computing with additional real-time capabilities. In several cases, traditional programming languages have become insufficient to build distributed systems easily, especially when real-time issues and basic software quality factors are concerned. In this paper, a concurrent, object-oriented, distributed real-time programming language, CPL, with a supportive run-time system, namely the CORD-RTS, is introduced and new language features are described. The new language provides an efficient solution for command and control systems by embedding distribution and real-time …

A New Congestion Control Mechanism Proposed For The Sscop Protocol, A. Hali̇m Zai̇m

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

International Telecommunication Union, Telecommunications Sector (ITU-T) Recommendation Q.2110 states that the update of a granted credit window to the transmitter (VR(MR)) is implementation dependent. In this paper, a new algorithm is designed to control the traffic flow coming from malfunctioning users. The VR(MR) parameter is controlled for that purpose. The simulation results show that this new technique nearly doubles the system performance.

Walkthrough In Complex Environments At Interactive Rates Using Level-Of-Detail, Alper Selçuk, Uğur Güdükbay, Bülent Özgüç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

One of the biggest problems in computer graphics is displaying huge geometric models at interactive rates. A lot of work has been done to achieve the required frame-rates in architecture, simulation, computer-aided design and entertainment applications. In this paper, a system that enables walkthrough in complex environments using level-of-detail approximations is explained. The system uses hierarchical triangulated models as input. In the preprocessing phase, multiresolution models of objects are created using polygonal simplification techniques. During walkthrough, fast frustum culling based on bounding boxes is performed to eliminate branches of hierarchy that are not visible. An appropriate level for detail of …

A New Petri-Net-Based Synthesis Technique For Supervisory Control Of Discrete Event Systems, Murat Uzam, Anthony H. Jones Jan 2002

A New Petri-Net-Based Synthesis Technique For Supervisory Control Of Discrete Event Systems, Murat Uzam, Anthony H. Jones

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new Petri-net-based top-down synthesis technique for supervisory control of Discrete Event Systems (DES) is proposed to solve the forbidden state problem. The supervisors obtained are compiled supervisors, whose control policy is represented as a net structure, as opposed to mapping supervisors, whose control policy is computed as a feedback function of the marking of the system. The compiled supervisors obtained by using the technique proposed in this paper are both nonblocking and maximally permissive. The supervisors to be synthesised consist of a controlled Automation Petri Net model of the system. Automation Petri Nets (APN) include the following extensions to …
