Integrating The Primary Grades Curriculum Using A Science Activity Handbook For A Classroom Pet, Sue Wilson
All Graduate Projects
An integrated activity handbook for a guinea pig, a classroom or home pet, has been developed to aid teachers in incorporating science into the elementary classroom. Studies indicate the importance of science education for young children. This integrated approach has been found to be a means to connect various academic areas such as science, reading, and mathematics. The Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements contain many elements, features, and forms that can be met in the materials and activities in this project. Research and literature regarding science education were explored.
Kindergarten Readiness: A Checklist For Parents And Teachers, Monica Rose Wolfe
Kindergarten Readiness: A Checklist For Parents And Teachers, Monica Rose Wolfe
All Graduate Projects
The standards for kindergarten are being raised each year. Kindergarten is no longer a place for play and socializing. Instead, children are expected to read, write and use mathematical concepts. Using the questionnaire to evaluate a child will allow for communication between parents and teachers as to whether or not the child is ready to take on the new challenges of kindergarten. Providing feedback for parents as to what their child needs to work on to be adequately prepared for kindergarten, will help children to be more successful at the beginning of their school years.

Reproduction In West Virginia Populations Of The Southern Two-Lined Salamander (Eurycea Cirrigera), Timothy R. Brophy, Thomas K. Pauley
Faculty Publications and Presentations
We describe reproduction in West Virginia populations of the southern two-lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera) and provide insights into the behavioral ecology of this wide-ranging urodele. The first signs of reproduction are evident well before the arrival of Spring. Sexually mature adults inhabit the cold, rocky streams of southwestern West Virginia in early February. Females arc known by the presence of large oocytes visible through the body wall and males by their extremely swollen heads. Breeding occurs in the stream during late March and is marked by the presence of gravid females with sperm caps in their posterior cloacae. Eggs are …

We Americans are people of the journey. From boats across the Atlantic by way of Pilgrim quest, to the holocaust of the middle passage, to classic travelogues such as On the Road or Travels with Charley (in Search of America}, the stamp of the mythic journey seems to be indelibly planted on our national psyche. And as we all know, journeys have several staple elements: anticipation, consumption of a variety of foods at exorbitant prices, wrestling with a roadmap, and children in the back crying, "Are we there yet?" A quintessentially American component to the journey, however, is the postcard.

The bedrock notion that courts should, in the overwhelming majority of cases, defer to lawmakers is currently under attack in the nation's courts, commentary and classrooms. Leading the way are several United States Supreme Court Justices who, in cases involving the Commerce Clause, the Takings Clause and Section Five of the Fourteenth Amendment, are much more willing than their immediate predecessors to second-guess the motives and tactics of elected and appointed officials at all levels of government. Given this new juris-political reality, it is more important than ever that local government officials--who are often (though, certainly, not always justifiably) viewed …

Toward A Trademark-Based Liability System, Lynn M. Lopucki
UF Law Faculty Publications
No general rule of law renders trademark owners liable for products sold or business conducted under the trademark. This essay proposes the adoption of such a rule. The rationale for the change is that businesses are known by their trademarks, not their entity names, in the marketplace. The vast majority of customers - both businesses and consumers - select the persons with whom they will deal, and contract with those persons, on the basis of trademarks. The entity structures of businesses (corporate groups, franchises, joint ventures, etc.) are generally invisible to customers. Yet under current law the businesses' liabilities to …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Science is moving forward at a dizzying pace and more than 90% of the scientists who ever lived are alive today. The number of abstracts published in Chemical Abstracts was 1 million in the period from 1907 to 1937, the next million was published in the period from 1938 through 1956, and the next million published in 1957 to 1958. These are several facts that the author gives to help the reader understand why we scientists have to improve our ability to communicate science to a nonscientific audience. The purpose of this book is to "cover the essentials of what …

Comparative Cyclic Voltammetry And Surface Analysis Of Passive Films Grown On Stainless Steel 316 In Concrete Pore Model Solutions, Lucien Veleva, Mario A. Alpuche-Aviles, Melissa K. Graves-Brook, David O. Wipf
CAS Publications
The study of passive layers grown on AISI 316 stainless steel in two model solutions, saturated Ca(OH)2 and cement extract (CE) solution, show that each solution simulates the concrete pore environment in a different way. A more resistant passive layer is formed in CE solution due to its distinctive composition, homogeneity, thickness and porosity. The CE-exposed sample withstood several hours of cathodic polarization before the characteristic cyclic voltammetry peaks of the non-passivated AISI 316 reappeared. This is in contrast to the saturated Ca(OH)2-exposed sample, which showed the characteristic CV peaks after several minutes of cathodic polarization. XPS …

The issue of spatial querying accuracy has been viewed as critical to the successful implementation and long-term viability of the GIS technology. In order to improve the spatial querying accuracy and quality, the problems associated with the areas of fuzziness and uncertainty are of great concern in the spatial database community. There has been a strong demand to provide approaches that deal with inaccuracy and uncertainty in GIS. In this paper, we are dedicated to develop an approach that can perform fuzzy spatial querying under uncertainty. An inexact inferring strategy is investigated. The study shows that the fuzzy set and …
