The Effect Of Phase Separation On Charge Ordering State In La12xcaxmno3 (X ¼ 1/2, 2/3, And 3/4), H. D. Zhou, G. Li, S. J. Feng, Y. Liu, T. Qian, Xiaojuan Fan, X. G. Li

Physics Faculty Research

The magnetic phase separation characteristics are found in manganese perovskite La1/3Ca2/3MnO3 by electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetization measurements. An extra resonance signal observed in ESR spectra just above the charge ordering (CO) temperature TCO provides strong evidence for the existence of ferromagnetic (FM) clusters near the CO state. The investigation of the resistivity of La1-xCaxMnO3 (x=1/2, 2/3, and 3/4) in different magnetic fields up to 14 T shows that the effect of magnetic fields on CO state decreases with increasing x. Our results indicate that the percolative characteristics …

We have measured neutron resonances in the palladium isotopes 104, 105, and 110 for neutron energies from 1 to 2100 eV. Many new p-wave resonances have been observed. Their neutron widths and, in several cases, the radiative widths were measured. The average level spacings and the s-wave and p-wave neutron strength functions were determined. The time-of-flight method was used for both neutron total cross section measurements and total (n,γ) reaction yield measurements at the pulsed spallation neutron source of Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Well established resonance spectroscopy for these isotopes is essential for the analysis of parity violation data …

Actiononaias Ligamentina As A Biomonitor In The Green River: An Unique Approach For Analysis Of Environmental Impacts, Robert Kirkland Jan 2002

Actiononaias Ligamentina As A Biomonitor In The Green River: An Unique Approach For Analysis Of Environmental Impacts, Robert Kirkland

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Biomonitoring has become an important component in bioassessment programs. It is used to maintain high water quality standards, and determine contaminant levels and biological affects in areas that have been heavily disturbed. The objectives of this research were 1) to improve and apply certain modern biomonitoring techniques and 2) to locate possible contaminant sources affecting the flora and fauna of the Green River and of Mammoth Cave. Actinonaias ligamentina (Lamarck, 1819), a freshwater mussel, was used for interpretation of these impacts as well as refinement of biomonitoring techniques. The mussels were collected in the Lawler Bend region of the Green …

Integrating Reading, Language Arts, Science, And Social Studies Curriculum With The Use Of Technology, Bonney Elizabeth Waters Jan 2002

Integrating Reading, Language Arts, Science, And Social Studies Curriculum With The Use Of Technology, Bonney Elizabeth Waters

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of the project was to develop three thematic units for fifth grade that intergrate California State Standards in Reading, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies with the use of technology. The benefits of doing so allows instructional time to be spent on more in depth study of the disciplines, Students make connections across curriculum which allows them to develop a deeper understanding of what is being taught. Also, integrating curriculum with technology engages students and allows them to have more control over their learning environment. When students are actively involved in what is being taught, they will internalize …

A Comparative Analysis Of Student Performance Utilizing Computer Based Instruction And Teacher Based Instruction Within A Secondary Mathematics Setting, John Douglas Sawtelle

Theses Digitization Project

This project addresses the question: does computer based instruction enhance student learning when compared to traditional lecture or teacher based instruction? The overall purpose of this project was an assessment of student performance before and after using computer based instruction versus a before and after assessment using traditional teacher based instruction.

Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, Paul Shibalovich Jan 2002

Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, Paul Shibalovich

Theses Digitization Project

The fundamental theorem of algebra (FTA) is an important theorem in algebra. This theorem asserts that the complex field is algebracially closed. This thesis will include historical research of proofs of the fundamental theorem of algebra and provide information about the first proof given by Gauss of the theorem and the time when it was proved.

Multi-Database Support In The Recursive Multi-Threaded Software Process Management Tool, Yi-Chiun Kuo

Theses Digitization Project

The Recursive Multi-Threaded (RMT) software process management tool gives software developers the following capabilities: break a large project into a sequence of prototypes (or threads) track these threads individually, and estimate the progress and completion date of the project from these individual threads. The goal of this project is to provide the RMT Tool with an ability to support multi-database for collaborative software development. As a demonstration, actual data is used from several previous algorithma projects.

Egyptian Fractions, Jodi Ann Hanley Jan 2002

Egyptian Fractions, Jodi Ann Hanley

Theses Digitization Project

Egyptian fractions are what we know as unit fractions that are of the form 1/n - with the exception, by the Egyptians, of 2/3. Egyptian fractions have actually played an important part in mathematics history with its primary roots in number theory. This paper will trace the history of Egyptian fractions by starting at the time of the Egyptians, working our way to Fibonacci, a geologist named Farey, continued fractions, Diophantine equations, and unsolved problems in number theory.

Integrated Agriscience And Career Awareness Curriculum For Elementary And Middle School Utilizing School Gardens, Lorie Susan Suntree Jan 2002

Integrated Agriscience And Career Awareness Curriculum For Elementary And Middle School Utilizing School Gardens, Lorie Susan Suntree

Theses Digitization Project

Agriculture is a one billion dollar industry in the state of California, yet science and agriculture are overlooked in elementary and middle schools. Instead, an emphasis is placed on writing, reading, and math, subjects that are tested at the state level. As a result, fourth and eighth graders in California placed 38th out of 41 in a National Science Assessment Test. In the spring of 2003, science will be included in the statewide test; therefore, elementary and middle school will have to address the subject of science and its impact on the school day. In 2002 the California State Board …

What Does 'Impact' Mean In The Evaluation Of Learning Technology, Jen Harvey, Martin Oliver Jan 2002

What Does 'Impact' Mean In The Evaluation Of Learning Technology, Jen Harvey, Martin Oliver

Journal Articles

Whilst many projects in Higher Education are expected to demonstrate their impact, quite what this requirement means is often left unspecified. This paper draws on the experiences of the EFFECTS project in an attempt to illuminate this issue. The EFFECTS evaluation framework is used to structure this discussion, which explores the complexities associated with identifying impact in terms of student learning, changes in practice for academics, changes within an organisation and national development. Common themes arising from these areas are then identified.

An "Opposition" To The Recently-Proposed Legislation Related To Business Model Patents, 20 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 397 (2002), Gregory J. Maier, Thomas J. Fisher, Philippe J. C. Signore

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The authors in this article review the history of the business method exception before and after the State Street Bank case. In that case, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decided that there was no business method exception, and never had been. The court pointed out that previous decisions were decided on other grounds found in the statutes. The authors argue that, because of the timing and economic environment of the decision, the case gained much popularity and discussion. However, the patent law has not changed since then and the business method exception is still not a patentable …
