Superexchange effects on the electronic coupling element for electron transfer are investigated using water dimers and atomic donors and acceptors. We compare the electronic coupling elements obtained with H-bonded dimers to those obtained for other water dimer geometries at given donor−acceptor and oxygen−oxygen distances. The H-bonded orientation does not yield significantly different coupling elements from non-H-bonded orientations at a given oxygen−oxygen distance. In addition, the distance dependence of the coupling mediated by H-bonds is not significantly different from that for other dimer geometries. It is found that protonation of the intervening waters has a significant effect on coupling elements for …

Rural And Urban Differences In Australian Education., Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

LSAY Briefing Reports

Whether or not students' educational performance is influenced by where they live is an important issue for educators and policy makers. This paper reports findings from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) into the influence of students' location on several outcomes: achievement in literacy and numeracy; tertiary entrance scores; subject choice in Year 12; participation in Year 12 and higher education; participation in vocational education and training; and transitions from education to work.

Labor Scheduling With Employee Turnover And Absenteeism, Fred F. Easton, John C. Goodale Jan 2002

Labor Scheduling With Employee Turnover And Absenteeism, Fred F. Easton, John C. Goodale

Management - All Scholarship

Most labor staffing and scheduling models presume that all employees scheduled for duty reliably report for work at the beginning of their shift. For industries with even moderate turnover or absenteeism, this assumption may be quite costly. We present a profit-oriented labor scheduling model that accounts for the day-to-day flux of employees and capacity induced by voluntary resignations, new hires, experience curves, and absenteeism. The proposed model also anticipates revenue losses due to reneging by customers whose patience decays exponentially with queue time. Our computational studies suggest that firms with comparatively high transaction volumes, long transaction times, and/or relatively tight …

N-Commutator Groups, A. A. Mehrvarz, K. Azizi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A sufficient condition such that any element of G' (the commutator subgroup of G) can be represented as a product of n commutators, was studied in \cite{GAL62}. In this article we study a necessary and sufficient condition such that any element of G' can be represented as a product of n commutators, Let n be the smallest nature number such that any element of finite group G can be represented as a product of n commutators. A group G with this property will be called an n -commutator group, and n will be denoted by c(G) . Then \frac{\ln( G' …

How It Essentially Was; Truth Claims In History And Accounting, CiaráN Ó Hogartaigh, Margaret Ó Hogartaigh, Ingrid Jeacle Jan 2002

How It Essentially Was; Truth Claims In History And Accounting, CiaráN Ó Hogartaigh, Margaret Ó Hogartaigh, Ingrid Jeacle

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper compares and contrasts the conceptualization of profession in history and accounting. Professional history and, to a more limited extent, professional accounting have their 19th century origins in notions of scientific method and objectivity as well as in motives of closure and exclusivity. The paper argues that these scientific origins of both history and accounting rendered them exclusive not only in membership but in methodology. As scientific approaches relied on documentary evidence, various rich, if less reliable, sources of evidence were excluded. This resulted in the representation of a limited and flawed reality in both history and accounting which …

An Interactive Tutorial For Teaching Statistical Power, Christopher L. Aberson '99, Dale E. Berger, Michael R. Healy '04, Victoria L. Romero '07

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper describes an interactive Web-based tutorial that supplements instruction on statistical power. This freely available tutorial provides several interactive exercises that guide students as they draw multiple samples from various populations and compare results for populations with differing parameters (for example, small standard deviation versus large standard deviation). The tutorial assignment includes diagnostic multiple-choice questions with feedback addressing misconceptions, and follow-up questions suitable for grading. The sampling exercises utilize an interactive Java applet that graphically demonstrates relationships between statistical power and effect size, null and alternative populations and sampling distributions, and Type I and II error rates. The applet …

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen Jan 2002

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Due to the recent explosion of information in the biomedical field, it is hard for a single researcher to review the complex network involving genes, proteins, and interactions. We are currently building GeneScene, a toolkit that will assist researchers in reviewing existing literature, and report on the first phase in our development effort: extracting the relevant information from medical abstracts. We are developing a medical parser that extracts information, fills basic prepositional-based templates, and combines the templates to capture the underlying sentence logic. We tested our parser on 50 unseen abstracts and found that it extracted 246 templates with a …

Personal Account Books Of Sir Walter Scott, Sam Mckinstry, Marie Fletcher

Accounting Historians Journal

This study examines the personal account books of Sir Walter Scott, the world-renowned Scottish author, a topic not explored before by Scott scholars or accounting historians. It sets the account books in the context of Scott's accounting education and experience, which took place at the time of the Scottish Enlightenment, an 18th century movement which saw a great flowering of writings on accountancy in Scotland as well as considerable progress in the arts and sciences. The style, layout and content of the account books is also studied from the point of view of elucidating Scott's domestic financial arrangements and expenditure …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kimberly K. Blakesley Jan 2002

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kimberly K. Blakesley

Graduate Research Papers

The most vital role an administrator can play is that of aiding teachers to enable students to learn. This will be done through giving and coaching unselfishly. The need of an educator in any position is to pass on the key that will enable students to renew their faith and confidence in their own abilities. Once the student finds or accepts this key and uses it, they will unlock the golden door to learning--then the rest is up to them. The constant repetition of learning will be absorbed by that other mind of theirs, the subconscious, and eventually will be …

Illinois River Phosphorus Sampling Results And Mass Balance Computation, Marc Nelson, K.L. White, T.S. Soerens Jan 2002

Illinois River Phosphorus Sampling Results And Mass Balance Computation, Marc Nelson, K.L. White, T.S. Soerens

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Phosphorus levels in the Illinois River are of great interest to the people of the States of Arkansas and Oklahoma. A great deal of effort has been expended to ascertain and modify the phosphorus impacts on the river. An automatic water sampling station was installed on the Illinois River just upstream from the State line in 1996 to accurately quantify the phosphorus in the Arkansas portion of the watershed. This paper summarizes five years worth of phosphorus sampling results at that site. In addition, a simple mass balance for phosphorus in the Illinois River Watershed above the sampling station was …

Combining Probability Of Emptiness And Mean First Overflow Time Of A Dam To Determine Its Capacity Jan 2002

Combining Probability Of Emptiness And Mean First Overflow Time Of A Dam To Determine Its Capacity

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Probabilistic considerations have been practiced in determining the capacity of a dam after the introduction of probability theory of dams by P. A. P. Moran (1954). Various researchers determined the capacity by using stationary distribution of the dam content, mean of the first emptiness time, and by specifying the probability of overflow of a dam. In this study, after highlighting the methods used by the design engineers using probabilistic consideration at various stages of the process, capacity has been determined by using the probability of emptiness and overflow simultaneously. As an example, riverflow data of Mitta Mitta River of Australia …

A Vote Cast; A Vote Counted: Quantifying Voting Rights Through Proportional Representation In Congressional Elections, Michael Mccann Jan 2002

A Vote Cast; A Vote Counted: Quantifying Voting Rights Through Proportional Representation In Congressional Elections, Michael Mccann

Law Faculty Scholarship

The current winner-take-all or first-past-the-post system of voting promotes an inefficient market where votes are often wasted. In this system, representatives are selected from a single district in which the candidate with the plurality of votes gains victory. Candidates who appear non-generic can rarely, if ever, expect to receive the most votes in this system. This phenomenon is especially apparent when African-Americans and other minority groups seek elected office. In part because white voters constitute at least a plurality of voters in every state except Hawaii, minorities in the forty-nine other states have had historically little success in gaining election …

The Magnetism-Nanostructure Interface In Advanced Magnetic Materials, David J. Sellmyer Jan 2002

The Magnetism-Nanostructure Interface In Advanced Magnetic Materials, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The critical relationship between microstructure and nanostructure of materials and their magnetic properties has been appreciated for decades. Electromagnetic machinery, permanent magnets, and data recording and electronic devices all have seen steady and sometimes spectacular advances over this period. At the present time the most interesting research in magnetism and magnetic materials arises from new developments in structuring materials on the nanometer length scale. This talk will present recent advances and challenges in furthering this work, with particular attention paid to extremely high density magnetic recording films, exchange-coupled high-energy-product permanent-magnet materials, high-temperature permanent-magnet materials, and self-organized and patterned magnetic nanoarrays.

Adsorbate And Thermally Induced Spin Reorientation Transition In Low-Temperature-Grown Fe/Cu(001), D. Peterka, Axel Enders, G. Haas, K. Kern

Axel Enders Publications

Adsorbate and thermally induced changes of the spin reorientation transition in Fe wedges grown at 140 K on Cu(001) substrates are investigated by the magneto-optical Kerr effect and Kerr microscopy. The adsorption of oxygen causes a complete reorientation of the easy axis of magnetization into the film plane. In contrast to that carbon monoxide decreases the critical thickness for the reorientation transition of the film by 0.7 monolayer down to 3.6 monolayers, while films thinner than 3.6 monolayers remain magnetized perpendicularly. These adsorbate-induced changes can be ascribed to a change in the surface magnetic anisotropy. Also annealing of the films …

Psychology Faculty Publications

More powerful methods for studying and integrating the historical track record of scientific episodes and scientific judgment, or what Faust and Meehl describe as a program of meta‐science and meta‐scientific studies, can supplement and extend more commonly used case study methods. We describe the basic premises of meta‐science, overview methodological considerations, and provide examples of meta‐scientific studies. Meta‐science can help to clarify or resolve long‐standing questions in the history and philosophy of science and provide practical help to the working scientist.
