Outcomes Of Camping: Perceptions From Camper Focus Groups, M. Deborah Bialeschki, Amy Krehbiel, Karla A. Henderson

Research in Outdoor Education

The Recreation and Leisure Studies Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and Morry's Camp are working together to develop an evaluation research plan that blends appropriate measurement tools with assessing desired outcomes. Several methodological techniques are in place to gather qualitative and. quantitative longitudinal data from Morry's Camp.

This paper, however, will focus on one set of qualitative results gathered from three exploratory focus groups conducted with campers. The purpose of this paper is to describe the match between the camp's objectives and the valued aspects of the camp experience as articulated by the campers. Our …

An Examination Of The Effects Of Experiential Education In A Cross Cultural Context On The Moral Reasoning Of High School Students, Jordana Dezeeuw

Research in Outdoor Education

The purpose of this study was to ascertain if a student's moral reasoning may be enhanced during cross-cultural immersion programs, which intentionally incorporate experiential learning (i.e., the cycle of experience reflection transfer new knowledge). Using the University of Minnesota's Center for the Study of Ethical Development Defining Issues Test - 2 (DIT-2) as a quantitative instrument, the study looked at the indicated differences in the moral reasoning of 50 students between the ages of 14 and 18 before and after their experiences on Global Routes and Interlocken travel programs.

The Awareness Activation Model For Transfer Of Learning In Experiential Settings, Ron Ramsing, Karen P. Hurtes Jan 2002

The Awareness Activation Model For Transfer Of Learning In Experiential Settings, Ron Ramsing, Karen P. Hurtes

Research in Outdoor Education

An individual applying her or his newfound knowledge and transferring the information, through action to a new setting is a valued outcome for experiential education practitioners. At the most basic level, the notion of transfer of knowledge appears so simple and commonsensical that it may only subconsciously serve as the focal point of initiative/rope course activities. Yet, transfer facilitated with intention may very well make any new knowledge acquired through experience more efficacious, applicable, and enduring for an individual. Intentional facµitation, including isomorphic framing, may be the "trigger" that activates one's sense of mindfulness toward long-term use or even a …

The outcomes under study include increased positive identity ; improved social skills; increased positive values; and learning new skills including cognitive, and psycho-motor skills.

A Multivariate Model Of Adventure Program Perceptions, Jim Sibthorp, Eddie Hill Jan 2002

A Multivariate Model Of Adventure Program Perceptions, Jim Sibthorp, Eddie Hill

Research in Outdoor Education

Continued interest in ·program evaluation· and improvement has led to calls for additional multivariate research, better measurement tools, and more complex research designs (Roberts & Yerkes, 2000; Ewert & Sibthorp, 2000). Through multivariate studies, researchers and practitioners can better discern which components of adventure programs have the greatest explanatory power regarding program outcomes, and which variables interact to facilitate or impede the learning of programmatic objectives. Recently, new instrumentation has been developed to better address the needs of adventure education research and evaluation. The Life Effectiveness Questionnaire (LEQ) was designed to measure eight domains that are possible outcomes for adventure …

Cooper Pair Islanding Model Of Insulating Nanohoneycomb Films, Shawna M. Hollen, J M. Valles Jr. Jan 2002

Cooper Pair Islanding Model Of Insulating Nanohoneycomb Films, Shawna M. Hollen, J M. Valles Jr.

Physics & Astronomy

We first review evidence for the Cooper pair insulator (CPI) phase in amorphous nanohoneycomb (NHC) films. We then extend our analysis of superconducting islands induced by film thickness variations in NHC films to examine the evolution of island sizes through the magnetic field-driven SIT. Finally, using the islanding picture, we present a plausible model for the appearance and behavior of the CPI phase in amorphous NHC films.

Modeling The Effects Of Reservoir Competence Decay And Demographic Turnover In Lyme Disease Ecology, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld Jan 2002

Modeling The Effects Of Reservoir Competence Decay And Demographic Turnover In Lyme Disease Ecology, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld

Publications

Lyme disease risk is related to the abundance of infected nymphal ticks, which in turn depends on the abundance and reservoir competence of wild hosts. Reservoir competence of a host (i.e., probability that an infected host will infect a feeding vector) often declines over time after inoculation, and small mammalian reservoirs typically undergo rapid population growth during the period when vector ticks feed. These processes can affect disease risk in the context of site-specific tick abundance and host community composition. We modeled the effects of reservoir decay and host demographic turnover on Lyme disease risk using a simple yearly difference …

On Summand Sum And Summand Intersection Property Of Modules, Mustafa Alkan, Abdullah Harmanci Jan 2002

On Summand Sum And Summand Intersection Property Of Modules, Mustafa Alkan, Abdullah Harmanci

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

R will be an associative ring with identity and modules M will be unital left R- modules. In this work, extending modules and lifting modules with the SSP (or SIP) are studied. A necessary and sufficient condition for a module M to have the SSP is that for every decomposition M = A\oplus B and f\in Hom(A,B), Im(f) is a direct summand of B. Among others it is shown also that a (C_3) module with the SIP has the SSP, and a (D_3) module with SSP has the SIP.

Remarks On Bounded Operators In Köthe Spaces, P. B. Djakov, T. Terzi̇oğlu, M. Yurdakul, V. P. Zahariuta

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We prove that if \lambda(A),\lambda(B) and \lambda(C) are Köthe spaces such that L(\lambda(A),\lambda(B)) and L(\lambda(C),\lambda(A)) consist of bounded operators then each operator acting on \lambda(A) that factors over \lambda(B)\widehat\otimes_{\pi} \lambda(C) is bounded.

On The Existence Of Nontrivial Solutions To Some Elliptic Variational Inequalities, Vy Khoi Le, Klaus Schmitt Jan 2002

On The Existence Of Nontrivial Solutions To Some Elliptic Variational Inequalities, Vy Khoi Le, Klaus Schmitt

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper is concerned with the existence of nontrivial solutions of the obstacle problem: u ε K: ∫Ω ▽u▽ (v - u) dx - λ ∫ Ω u (v - u) dx ≥ ∫ Ω p (x, u) (v - u) dx ∀x ε K, where K = {v ε Ho1(Ω): v ≤ Ψ a.e. on Ω}. By using a generalized mountain pass theorem for inequalities, we prove, subject to some restrictions on the obstacle Ψ, the existence of nontrivial solutions of the above inequality.

A Multiple Regression Analysis Of Selected Variables Effecting The Transmission Of Video Over Internet Protocol Networks, David A. Rosenthal Jan 2002

A Multiple Regression Analysis Of Selected Variables Effecting The Transmission Of Video Over Internet Protocol Networks, David A. Rosenthal

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study was to conduct multiple regression analyses of selected variables effecting the transmission of video over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, utilizing data from Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Picture Quality Rating (PQR) measurement metrics. The variables selected for this research were congestion-specific in nature and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify the amount of variance in video signal quality attributable to their combined effects. The foundational research hypothesis constructed for this study proposed that increases in CODEC bit rates and network bandwidth would have no significant effect on the PSNR and PQR levels of transmitted …
