Experimental Violation Of A Spin-1 Bell Inequality Using Maximally Entangled Four-Photon States, John C. Howell, Antia Lamas-Linares, Dik Bouwmeester Jan 2002

Experimental Violation Of A Spin-1 Bell Inequality Using Maximally Entangled Four-Photon States, John C. Howell, Antia Lamas-Linares, Dik Bouwmeester

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We demonstrate the experimental violation of a spin-1 Bell inequality. The spin-1 inequality is based on the Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt formalism. For entangled spin-1 particles, the maximum quantum-mechanical prediction is 2.55 as opposed to a maximum of 2, predicted using local hidden variables. We obtained an experimental value of 2.27±0.02 using the four-photon state generated by pulsed, type-II, stimulated parametric down-conversion. This is a violation of the spin-1 Bell inequality by more than 13 standard deviations.

Depth Characterization Of Shallow Aquifers With Seismic Reflection, Part Ii—Prestack Depth Migration And Field Examples, John H. Bradford, D. S. Sawyer Jan 2002

Depth Characterization Of Shallow Aquifers With Seismic Reflection, Part Ii—Prestack Depth Migration And Field Examples, John H. Bradford, D. S. Sawyer

CGISS Publications and Presentations

It is common in shallow seismic studies for the compressional-wave velocity in unconsolidated sediments to increase by a factor of four or more at the transition from dry or partial water saturation to full saturation. Under these conditions, conventional NMO velocity analysis fails and leads to large depth and layer thickness estimates if the Dix equation is assumed valid. Prestack depth migration (PSDM) is a means of improving image accuracy. A comparison of PSDM with conventional NMO processing for three field examples from differing hydrogeologic environments illustrates that PSDM can significantly improve image quality and accuracy.

Quantum Computing: From Bragg Reflections To Decoherence Estimates, Peter Pfeifer, Chen Hou Jan 2002

Quantum Computing: From Bragg Reflections To Decoherence Estimates, Peter Pfeifer, Chen Hou

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

We give an exposition of the principles of quantum computing (logic gates, exponential parallelism from polynomial hardware, fast quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, hardware requirements, and experimental milestones). A compact description of the quantum Fourier transform to find the period of a function-the key step in Shor's factoring algorithm-illustrates how parallel state evolution along many classical computational paths produces fast algorithms by constructive interference similar to Bragg reflections in x-ray crystallography. On the hardware side, we present a new method to estimate critical time scales for the operation of a quantum computer. We derive a universal upper bound on the …

Determining The Locus For Photocarrier Recombination In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Kai Zhu, Eric A. Schiff, N. G. Park, J. Van De Lagemaat, A. J. Frank Jan 2002

Determining The Locus For Photocarrier Recombination In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Kai Zhu, Eric A. Schiff, N. G. Park, J. Van De Lagemaat, A. J. Frank

Physics - All Scholarship

We present intensity-modulated photocurrent and infrared transmittance measurements on dye-sensitized solar cells based on a mesoporous titania (TiO2) matrix immersed in an iodine-based electrolyte. Under short-circuit conditions, we show that an elementary analysis accurately relates the two measurements. Under open-circuit conditions, infrared transmittance, and photovoltage measurements yield information on the characteristic depth at which electrons recombine with ions (the ‘‘locus of recombination’’). For one particular series of samples recombination occurred near the substrate supporting the titania film, as opposed to homogeneously throughout the film.

Infrared Charge-Modulation Spectroscopy Of Defects In Phosphorus Doped Amorphous Silicon, Kai Zhu, Eric A. Schiff, G. Ganguly Jan 2002

Infrared Charge-Modulation Spectroscopy Of Defects In Phosphorus Doped Amorphous Silicon, Kai Zhu, Eric A. Schiff, G. Ganguly

Physics - All Scholarship

We present infrared charge-modulation absorption spectra on phosphorus-doped amorphous silicon (a-Si:H:P) with doping levels between 0.17% - 5%. At higher doping levels (1% - 5%) we find a sharp spectral line near 0.75 eV with a width of 0.1 eV. We attribute this line to the internal optical transitions of a complex incorporating four fold coordinated phosphorus and a dangling bond. This line is barely detectable in samples with lower doping levels (below 1%). In these samples a much broader line dominates the spectrum that we attribute to uncomplexed dopants. The relative strength of the two spectral features is in …

Integrating And Evaluating Interdisciplinary Sustainability And Stem Curriculum In Geographical Education: A Case Of Three Teaching Modalities, Susan Gilbertz, Brittany Wood, Christopher Craig, Ismail Karabas, Elizabeth Petrun Sayers, Benjamin Mccormick

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The effectiveness of interdisciplinary sustainability curriculum remains understudied in geography education. Accordingly, we deployed and evaluated an interdisciplinary sustainability and STEM module for in-person and online sections of a fall 2018 Human Geography course. Results indicate that sustainability knowledge improved after the interdisciplinary curricular intervention irrespective of course modality. Another focus is to explore student reactions to teaching modality due to COVID-19 disruptions. Results indicate that online student sustainability knowledge also improved during COVID-19 (fall 2020). For students in a section converted from in-person to blended, sustainability knowledge did not improve. Implications are provided.

Planetary Bioresources And Astroecology 1. Planetary Microcosm Bioassays Of Martian And Carbonaceous Chondrite Materials: Nutrients, Electrolyte Solutions, And Algal And Plant Responses, Michael Noah Mautner

Chemistry Publications

The biological fertilities of planetary materials can be assessed using microcosms based on materials in martian and carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Their biological fertilities are rated based on soluble electrolyte nutrients, on the growth of mesophile and cold-tolerant algae, and of plant tissue cultures. The Murchison CM2 carbonaceous chondrite meteorite and DaG 476 martian shergottite contain high levels of water-extractable Ca, Mg, and SO4–S. The martian meteorites DaG 476 and EETA 79001 also contain high levels of extractable nutrients NO3–N (0.013–0.017 g kg−1) and PO4–P (0.019–0.046 g kg−1). The yields of most of the water-extractable …

Integrating Mathematics, Technical Writing Skills And Authentic Assessment Into A Ninth And Tenth Grade Woodshop Curriculum, John Lawrence Mccarley Jan 2002

Integrating Mathematics, Technical Writing Skills And Authentic Assessment Into A Ninth And Tenth Grade Woodshop Curriculum, John Lawrence Mccarley

Graduate Student Projects

For this project an integrated woodshop curriculum containing elements of procedural writing and mathematics instruction was created. The curriculum design was based on the constructivist concept that students learn more efficiently when personal meaning is attached to the content presented. That concept was used to connect mathematics and writing to realistic applications in a woodshop setting. Support for integration of various content areas into a single curriculum is supported in the academic literature. Specific exercises to attain specific outcomes are discussed in the literature, and adaptations of those processes were incorporated in the project.

When Is Rain Steady?, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski Jan 2002

When Is Rain Steady?, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

By definition, steady rain should have a nearly constant rainfall rate. Thus far, however, the criteria for determining when rain is steady remain qualitative and arbitrary. The authors suggest a definition for steadiness that can be used to quantify the elusive notion of natural variability. In particular, the logical criteria for steadiness imply statistical stationarity and lack of correlation between raindrops in neighboring volumes, requirements identical to those for the drops being distributed according to a Poisson process at all scales. Hence, steady rain is Poissonian. Explicit equations for the variance of the rainfall rates are developed. They show that, …

Symmetric Periodic Solutions Of The Anisotopic Manev Problem, Manuele Santoprete Jan 2002

Symmetric Periodic Solutions Of The Anisotopic Manev Problem, Manuele Santoprete

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider the Manev potential in an anisotropic space, i.e., such that the force acts differently in each direction. Using a generalization of the Poincare continuation method we study the existence of periodic solutions for weak anisotropy. In particular we find that the symmetric periodic orbits of the Manev system are perturbed to periodic orbits in the anisotropic problem.

Dynamics Of Torque-Speed Profiles For Electric Vehicles And Nonlinear Models Based On Differential-Algebraic Equations, Roderick V.N. Melnik, Ningning Song, Per Sandholdt Jan 2002

Dynamics Of Torque-Speed Profiles For Electric Vehicles And Nonlinear Models Based On Differential-Algebraic Equations, Roderick V.N. Melnik, Ningning Song, Per Sandholdt

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The so-called μ — λ curves, where is the slip ratio and μ is the normalised traction force or the friction index, are nonlinear functions of the velocity of the vehicle and the wheel rotational velocity. Despite their predominant use in the literature, linear approximations of such curves may fail to predict correctly key characteristics of vehicle performance efficiency such as torque-speed profiles. Although attempts to model these characteristics in the context of slip phenomena have been made before, to our best knowledge a general model with respect to the vehicle velocity, the wheel rotating velocity, the slip ratio, the …

Death Of An Expert System: A Case Study Of Success And Failure, Richard G. Vedder, Thomas P. Van Dyke, Victor R. Prybutok

Journal of International Information Management

A decision team composed of managers and staff experts at Mary Kay Cosmetics develops packaging for new and revised products as well as sets their prices. However, the potential for costly errors in the decision-making process motivated this group to pursue development of an expert system (ES) to assist with the problem. The ES performed so well that it changed the organization's behavior—the group ceased to meet for the purpose of developing the packaging but instead gathered just to confirm and approve the expert system's solution. Despite the clear benefits associated with using an ES approach, the group stopped using …
