The past year has been one of repeated shocks to government and the larger society. Terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D. C, the burst of the dot.com bubble in the stock market, a wave of corporate scandals, and a slowdown in the economy posed severe problems for officials of all governments in the federal system. The combined effects of the war on terrorism and the economic turmoil forced federal policymakers to create new agencies and to enact new policies. Slate and local governments also responded to the multiple shocks with a variety of initiatives, often independent of …
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Susceptibility In Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman A. Alrajhi, Ali M. Al-Barrak
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Susceptibility In Saudi Arabia, Abdulrahman A. Alrajhi, Ali M. Al-Barrak
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To present the available susceptibility data of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) isolates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) published in peer-reviewed journals. METHODS: In a meta-analysis, studies published between 1966 and 2001 were included. Publication sites include Medline-indexed and non-indexed. Numbers of grown and resistant isolates were tabulated for first-line anti-tuberculosis agents. RESULTS: Twelve studies met the pre-set criteria. Data on 6,316 isolates between 1979 and 2000 were available. Resistance to at least one agent of the first-line anti-tuberculosis agents was 18.4%. Monoresistance to a single first-line agent was found in 10.9%, while polyresistance was noted in 7.6%. …

Mother-Infant Colonization And Neonatal Sepsis In Prelabor Rupture Of Membranes, Asindi A. Asindi, Eric I. Archibong, Nivedita B. Mannan
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the incidence of prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM) in a tertiary care institution, the bacterial pathogens involved in maternal and neonatal colonization, and the major bacterial pathogens of neonatal sepsis in PROM. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted over 2 years from March 1999 to February 2001 in Abha Maternity Hospital, Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Consecutive admissions of infant-and-mother pairs with PROM constitute the subjects of this survey. Every mother had endocervical swab taken before delivery, and their infants had surface swabs and sepsis screening before starting antibiotic therapy. RESULTS: The incidence of …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In the course of a revision of Haemonchus Cobb, 1898 (Nematoda), commonly referred to as large stomach worms, significant new morphological information was discovered that allows the recognition of two species believed for more than 50 years to be synonymous. Both species, Haemonchus mitchelli Le Roux, 1929, from the eland Taurotragus oryx and other African ruminants and H. okapiae van den Berghe, 1937, from the okapi Okapia johnstoni, have a synlophe of 42 ridges, but the synlophe of H. mitchelli is longer than that of H. okapiae. The distal tip of the left spicule of H. mitchelli bears …

Supervised Treatment Interruption (Sti) In An Urban Hiv Clinical Practice: A Prospective Analysis, Joseph L. Yozviak Do, Facp, Peter Kouvatos Do, R Eric Doerfler Np, Cch, William C. Woodward Do
Department of Medicine
Background: In acute HIV-1 infection, STI may induce immunologic control of HIV-1 replication. Several prospective trials of STI in chronic HIV-1 infection have been less encouraging. A previously presented retrospective analysis of our patients showed that in those with a significant CD4 increase (>200 cells) on antiretroviral therapy (ART), 2 or more interruptions may significantly lower viral set point. This prospective study describes STI in a cohort of patients.
Methods: 10 patients with either a positive response to therapy interruption retrospectively or those expressing interest in the strategy who met inclusion criteria (VL BLQ on ART, good adherence, robust …

Current Status Data: Review, Recent Developments And Open Problems, Nicholas P. Jewell, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Researchers working with survival data are by now adept at handling issues associated with incomplete data, particular those associated with various forms of censoring. An extreme form of interval censoring, known as current status observation, refers to situations where the only available information on a survival random variable T is whether or not T exceeds a random independent monitoring time C. This article contains a brief review of the extensive literature on the analysis of current status data, discussing the implications of response-based sampling on these methods. The majority of the paper introduces some recent extensions of these ideas to …
