Biological Implications Of The Weibull And Gompertz Models Of Aging, Robert Ricklefs, Alex Scheuerlein
Biological Implications Of The Weibull And Gompertz Models Of Aging, Robert Ricklefs, Alex Scheuerlein
Biology Department Faculty Works
Gompertz and Weibull functions imply contrasting biological causes of demographic aging. The terms describing increasing mortality with age are multiplicative and additive, respectively, which could result from an increase in the vulnerability of individuals to extrinsic causes in the Gompertz model and the predominance of intrinsic causes at older ages in the Weibull model. Experiments that manipulate extrinsic mortality can distinguish these biological models. To facilitate analyses of experimental data, we defined a single index for the rate of aging (ω) for the Weibull and Gompertz functions. Each function described the increase in aging-related mortality in simulated ages at death …

Staphylococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome In A Small Infant, Sameeh S. Ghazal, Mansour N. Al-Hawasi, Sulaiman A. Al-Mosallam, Yousef K. Ghazal, Aysha M. Al-Shammary
Saudi Medical Journal
Non menstrual staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome is rare in small infants. This is a 4-month-old infant presented to us with a picture of bronchiolitis and few postuler skin lesions, treated with antistapylococcal antibiotics in addition to other supportive medications. On the 4th day of therapy the patient developed sunburn like erythroderma, hypotension, and high grade fever. The dose of antibiotics was increased to the maximum possible dose, in addition to other supportive medications. The patient improved and developed extensive desquamation in both hands and feet on the 14th day of hospitalization, which confirms the diagnosis.

Osmosensitive Release Of Neurotransmitter Amino Acids: Relevance And Mechanisms, Herminia Pasantes-Morales, Rodrigo Franco, Lenin Ochoa, Benito Ordaz
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Hyposmolarity activates amino acid efflux as part of the corrective volume process in a variety of cells. This review discusses the mechanism of amino acid release in brain cells preparations. Results present evidence of substantial differences between the efflux of taurine and that of GABA and glu-tamate, which besides a possible role as osmolytes, have a main function as synaptic transmitters. The differences found concern the efflux time course, the sensitivity to Cl– channel blockers, the modulation by tyrosine kinases, the influence of PKC and the effect of cytoskeleton disruptive agents. While taurine efflux features fit well with the …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Wallinia chavarriae n. sp. is described from the small-bodied characids Astyanax aeneus and Bryconamericus scleroparius in the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, northwestern Costa Rica. The species differs from W. valenciae in possessing an acetabulum that is smaller than the oral sucker and vitelline follicles that are ovoid or rounded rather than elongate and tubular. Detailed comparison between these two species is handicapped by the less than satisfactory condition of the type and only museum specimen of W. valenciae. Wallinia chavarriae and W. valenciae belong to a subfamily of trematodes, Walliniinae, that arguably includes Creptotrematina spp., Magnivitellum simplex, and …
Cd8+-T-Cell Immunity Against Toxoplasma Gondii Can Be Induced But Not Maintained In Mice Lacking Conventional Cd4+ T Cells, Lori Casciotti, Kenneth H. Ely, Martha E. Williams, Imtiaz A. Khan
Cd8+-T-Cell Immunity Against Toxoplasma Gondii Can Be Induced But Not Maintained In Mice Lacking Conventional Cd4+ T Cells, Lori Casciotti, Kenneth H. Ely, Martha E. Williams, Imtiaz A. Khan
Dartmouth Scholarship
T-cell immunity is critical for survival of hosts infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Among the cells in the T-cell population, CD8+ T cells are considered the major effector cells against this parasite. It is believed that CD4+ T cells may be crucial for induction of the CD8+-T-cell response against T. gondii. In the present study, CD4−/− mice were used to evaluate the role of conventional CD4+ T cells in the immune response against T. gondii infection. CD4−/− mice infected with T. gondii exhibited lower gamma interferon (IFN-γ) messages in the majority of their …

Thin Laser Light Sheet Microscope For Microbial Oceanography, Eran Fuchs, Jules S. Jaffe, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam
Faculty Publications
Despite a growing need, oceanographers are limited by existing technological constrains and are unable to observe aquatic microbes in their natural setting. In order to provide a simple and easy to implement solution for such studies, a new Thin Light Sheet Microscope (TLSM) has been developed. The TLSM utilizes a well-defined sheet of laser light, which has a narrow (23 micron) axial dimension over a 1 mm x 1 mm field of view. This light sheet is positioned precisely within the depth of field of the microscope’s objective lens. The technique thus utilizes conventional microscope optics but replaces the illumination …

Pbp 5: Characterization Of An Escherichia Coli Morphogene., David Emmet Nelson
Pbp 5: Characterization Of An Escherichia Coli Morphogene., David Emmet Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
The penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) are a group o f enzymes responsible for the latter stages o f peptidoglycan synthesis. Our major research objective in this study was to determine the physiological roles o f the low molecular weight (LMW) PBPs of the Gram negative bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli). During extensive screening of a set o f mutant strains that lack different combinations of LMW PBP genes we determined that PBP 5 played a role in maintaining E. co li’s normal rod shape. However, loss of PBP 5 did not cause severe morphological alterations unless the cells were also …

To determine the factors associated with an increased risk of developing varicella-zoster virus (VZV) pneumonia during pregnancy, a case-control analysis was done in which 18 pregnant women with VZV pneumonia were compared with 72 matched control subjects. VZV infection was identified clinically, and VZV pneumonia was diagnosed by dyspnea and findings on chest radiographs. Of 347 pregnant women with VZV infection, 18 (5.2%) had pneumonia treated with acyclovir, and none died. Mean gestational age at rash onset was 25.8 ± 8.8 weeks for patients with pneumonia and 17.7 ± 10.3 weeks for control subjects, which was not significant in the …

Vcu News (2002-01-16)
VCU News, 2001-2002
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
