A Comparison Of 'Cough And Cold' And Pneumonia: Risk Factors For Pneumonia In Children Under 5 Years Revisited, Zafar Fatmi, Franklin White
A Comparison Of 'Cough And Cold' And Pneumonia: Risk Factors For Pneumonia In Children Under 5 Years Revisited, Zafar Fatmi, Franklin White
Community Health Sciences
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify and measure the risk factors differentiating upper respiratory infection from pneumonia. Methods: The World Health Organization's acute respiratory infection case management criteria were used. We studied 259 cases of pneumonia (cases) and 187 cases of 'cough and cold' (controls) among children under 5 years of age at a large tertiary-care hospital in Gilgit, Pakistan. While previous studies used healthy controls, in this study we used controls who had mild infection ('cough and cold').Results: In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, lack of immunization (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=1.54, 95% CI 1.0, 2.3), previous history …

Identification Of A Second Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen In The Human Malarial Pathogen Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Av Warren, Ls Cox
School of Biomedical Sciences
Proliferating cell nuclear antigen seems to exist as a single form in higher eukaryotic cells and plays multiple roles in nucleic acid metabolism. We have identified a second additional proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PfPCNA2) in Plasmodium falciparum on the basis of several lines of evidence. (1) PfPCNA2, consisting of 264 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular mass of 30.2kDa, shares only 29% identity and 53% similarity with PfPCNA1 at the amino acid level. (2) Southern blot analyses revealed that the hybridisation pattern of the Pfpcna2 gene is completely different from that of the Pfpcna1 gene. (3) Chromosomal localisation studies …

A Promising New Role For Extension Educators In A Dynamic Industry: The Cow Sense Project, Richard Stup, Robert Van Saun, David Wolfgang
Journal of Extension
The environment for Extension is rapidly changing, but new opportunities are emerging. Extension can play a unique and important role in helping managers learn to consistently apply technical knowledge throughout their organizations. "Cow Sense" is a successful program that can serve as a model for progressive programming that combines technical knowledge with organizational development.
Bioorganic Studies In Aids: Synthetic Antifungals Against Pneumocystis Carinii Based On The Multivalency Concept, Langu Peng, Cunxiang Chen, Christian R. Gonzalez, Valeria Balogh-Nair
Bioorganic Studies In Aids: Synthetic Antifungals Against Pneumocystis Carinii Based On The Multivalency Concept, Langu Peng, Cunxiang Chen, Christian R. Gonzalez, Valeria Balogh-Nair
Publications and Research
We report the syntheses of antifungals containing the novel pharmacophores: oxaziridines, sulfonyloxaziridines, nitrones and nitronyl nitroxides. We hypothesized that multiple copies of the pharmacophore per molecule might be a prerequisite to enhance efficacy against the opportunistic pathogen, Pneumocystis carinii. Therefore structural optimization of the leads was based on this new “multivalency” approach. All bisoxaziridines were inactive, but a trisoxaziridine caused ca. 50% reduction of the number of P. carinii tropozoites, compared to TMP-SMX, and a hexaoxaziridine at 1 µg/ml showed activity comparable to the currently used drug, TMP-SMX. Insertion of three units of the nitronyl nitroxide pharmacophore per molecule afforded …

U.S. Childhood Vaccine Availability: Legal, Regulatory, And Economic Complexities, Robin J. Strongin
U.S. Childhood Vaccine Availability: Legal, Regulatory, And Economic Complexities, Robin J. Strongin
National Health Policy Forum
Despite the vital role they play in public health, childhood vaccines travel a complicated road from laboratory to provider and patient. From the fall of 2000 until well into 2002, a combination of factors, including market dynamics, legal challenges, and regulatory hurdles, led to a shortage of some childhood vaccines. This paper examines each of these factors, focusing on the important roles of both the public and the private sectors.

Control Of Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly) In Backyards, Sonya Broughton, Francis De Lima
Bulletins 4000 -
The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Medfly) is thought to originate from tropical Africa. It is a pest in many areas of the world including Western Australia. It was first detected at Claremont in 1895 and is now found as far south as Esperance and as far north as Derby. The main area of infestation extends from Carnarvon to Bunbury.

Prevalence Of Hepatitis C Virus Antibodies Among Different Populations Of Relative And Attributable Risk, Mohamed A. Daw, Mohamed A. Elkaber, Aisha M. Drah, Mansour M. Werfalli, Abdulgadir A. Mihat, Ismail M. Siala
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies among 5 different population groups including; healthy individuals, blood donors, hospital health care workers, renal dialysis patients and multiple blood transfusion group. To compare the ratios, relative and attributable risk among these groups. To outline a specific policy to reduce the potential risk of HCV among the different groups studied. METHODS: A prospective study was carried out in the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Tripoli, Libya, over a 2 year period for 1999 to 2001, to determine the prevalence of HCV-antibodies in sera collected from 5 distinct groups …

Hematological Changes In Cement Mill Workers, Sultan A. Meo, Muhammad A. Azeem, Shoukat A. Arian, Merza M. Subhan
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Considering the hazards of exposure to cement dust, this study incorporated basic hematological parameters, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the total leukocyte count. The idea was to identify a simple, readily available and cost effective screening test that could help in identifying the presence of disease, its severity, or both in cement mill workers potentially related to their work place. METHODS: This study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Hamdard University, Karachi and the University of Karachi, Pakistan, during the time frame 1999-2000. In this study a group of 50, apparently healthy …

Aisimam - An Artificial Immune System Based Intelligent Multiangent Model, Srividhya Sathyanath
Aisimam - An Artificial Immune System Based Intelligent Multiangent Model, Srividhya Sathyanath
Theses
The goal of this thesis is to develop a biological model for multiagent systems. This thesis explores artificial immune systems, a novel evolutionary paradigm based on the immunological principles. Artificial Immune systems (AIS) are found to be powerful to solve complex computational tasks. The main focus of the thesis is to develop a generic mathematical model that uses the principles of the human immune system in multiagent systems (MAS). The components and properties of the human immune system are studied. On understanding the concepts of A/5, a literature survey of multiagent systems is performed to understand and compare the multiagent …
